AS, A2 and the university timeline
An A Level runs over two years. The first year leads to the AS, and the second, often called A2, completes the full A Level. Cambridge lets a student sit the AS papers at the end of the first year and the rest later, or sit everything at the end; Pearson Edexcel's international A Level is built in units that can be taken across its January, June and October series.
The timing matters because of university applications. Students applying to UK universities are usually offered a place on predicted grades, and the offer becomes firm only when the final results meet it, so the first-year results feed straight into the predictions a college writes. Students applying in Malaysia or elsewhere face the same logic with different deadlines.
Tuition therefore works on two clocks at once. There is the next set of papers, and there is the prediction the college will write months before them. A strong AS makes both easier, which is the best argument for starting in the first year instead of waiting until the second.
Where A-Level students lose marks
The jump from SPM or IGCSE is sharper than students expect. Questions stop telling the student what method to use, algebra has to be fluent enough that it never becomes the difficulty, and a single question can run across a full page. Students who were strong at school sometimes struggle first, because they relied on recognising the question type.
In Mathematics, marks leak through unshown working, "show that" questions that skip the one line the examiner is looking for, and answers given to the wrong accuracy. In the sciences, the planning and data-analysis papers ask students to design an experiment and judge the evidence in writing, a skill few of them have practised deliberately.
Economics is lost at the evaluation stage. A student can define and explain every concept in the question and still miss the top band, because the higher marks need a judgement: which effect is larger, under what conditions, and what would change the answer.
Who teaches A-Level classes
A-Level tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, who are matched to the board and the papers the student sits. Many have come through A-Level or an equivalent pre-university programme themselves and now read the subject, or one that uses it heavily, at university.
1-to-1 usually suits A-Level best, because students rarely share the same combination of papers, college timetable and exam series. When classmates do share them, a small group costs less and gives each student someone to race.
A question, worked through
A question in the style of Cambridge Pure Mathematics 1, on stationary points. The method is standard, and the marks go to students who show each stage and justify the nature of each point instead of asserting it.
The curve y = 2x³ − 9x² + 12x − 4 has two stationary points. Find their coordinates and determine the nature of each.
- Differentiate: dy/dx = 6x² − 18x + 12.
- Set the derivative to zero and factorise: 6(x² − 3x + 2) = 0, which is 6(x − 1)(x − 2) = 0, so x = 1 or x = 2.
- Substitute each x back into the equation of the curve, not into the derivative: at x = 1, y = 2 − 9 + 12 − 4 = 1; at x = 2, y = 16 − 36 + 24 − 4 = 0.
- Differentiate again: d²y/dx² = 12x − 18. At x = 1 this is −6, which is negative, so (1, 1) is a maximum. At x = 2 it is 6, which is positive, so (2, 0) is a minimum.
Answer: A maximum point at (1, 1) and a minimum point at (2, 0).

Do you cover Further Maths?
Yes, with a tutor matched to the Further Mathematics papers the student is sitting. Fewer tutors have taken Further Mathematics than Mathematics, so tell the advisor early; the match is easier to make before the college term is under way.
How early before the exam should we start?
For a student who wants a strong prediction, the start of the first year, since the AS results shape it. For one who is on track and wants to stay there, a term before the papers is usually enough. Starting a few weeks before is possible, and then the classes are almost all past papers and timing.
Do you teach both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel?
Yes. Tell the advisor the board and the paper or unit codes, for example Cambridge 9709 Pure Mathematics 1 or the Edexcel international unit the student is entered for, and the tutor plans against those papers and their mark schemes.
How much does A-Level tuition cost?

Can you help with AS and A2 papers in the same series?
Yes. A student sitting everything at the end, or resitting an AS paper alongside the A2 papers, needs a plan that divides the time between both. The tutor sets it out week by week so the older papers do not crowd out the new material or the other way round.
