The subjects without a link are taught as well, and every class starts from the same question: which board and which syllabus code is on the student's exam entry. Two schools can both say "IGCSE Physics" and mean different papers.

How IGCSE differs from KSSM
Students who move from a national school to an international one often find the content familiar and the papers strange. IGCSE covers more ground in each science at less depth than KSSM, and it asks for that breadth in short answers: a two-mark question may want one idea and one reason, and nothing longer earns more.
Command words carry the marks. "State" wants a fact, "describe" wants what happens, "explain" wants why, and "suggest" wants a reasonable idea applied to something the student has not seen before. KSSM students used to writing everything they know lose marks by answering the wrong command word well.
Data questions take up a larger share of the paper than most KSSM students expect. Graphs, tables and unfamiliar experimental set-ups appear in every science paper, and Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an Alternative to Practical paper that examines laboratory skills in writing. A student who never learned to read a results table under time pressure feels the gap here first.
Mathematics works the other way round. Most of the content will look familiar to a KSSM student, but the Extended papers mix topics inside one question and expect clear, efficient working with less signposting from the question itself.
Core or Extended
In most Cambridge subjects the school enters each student for Core or Extended. The choice sets a ceiling: Core candidates can be awarded grades C to G, while Extended opens A* to E. A student aiming for an A or A* has to sit Extended, and one who is borderline needs the decision made early enough that the class plan covers the Extended-only content.
Pearson Edexcel draws the same line in Mathematics with Foundation and Higher tiers, while its science papers are untiered. Tutors plan against the tier on the entry, and when a student is close to the line they work on the harder material first, so the school has evidence when the entry is confirmed.
How IGCSE classes are planned
Before the first class the advisor asks for the board, the syllabus code, the tier and the exam series. The tutor then plans against that specification, uses past papers from the same board, and marks them the way the board's published mark schemes do, which is stricter about wording than most students expect.
The two-year course usually runs as Year 10 and Year 11 in international schools, with mock examinations partway through the second year. Classes follow the school's own order through the specification, so the tutor consolidates what the school has just taught rather than racing ahead of it.
Tutors match to the papers rather than to a label. A student sitting Cambridge Physics 0625 is taught to the 0625 papers, and a student sitting Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics is taught to those, since the two differ in structure and in how marks are awarded.
A question, worked through
A question in the style of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Paper 4, the Extended structured paper. Part (a) gives away its result, which is the point: a "show that" tests whether the working reaches the answer honestly.
A rectangle has length (x + 4) cm and width (x − 3) cm, and its area is 60 cm². (a) Show that x² + x − 72 = 0. (b) Solve the equation and find the perimeter of the rectangle.
- Write the area as length times width: (x + 4)(x − 3) = 60.
- Expand the brackets fully before tidying anything: x² − 3x + 4x − 12 = 60, so x² + x − 12 = 60.
- Subtract 60 from both sides to reach x² + x − 72 = 0. In a "show that" every line has to be visible; jumping from the brackets to the given equation earns nothing.
- Factorise: x² + x − 72 = (x + 9)(x − 8), so x = −9 or x = 8.
- Reject x = −9, because the width would be −12 cm. With x = 8 the rectangle is 12 cm by 5 cm, and 12 × 5 = 60 confirms it.
- The perimeter is 2 × (12 + 5) = 34 cm.
Answer: x = 8, so the rectangle is 12 cm by 5 cm and its perimeter is 34 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Do you teach Cambridge or Edexcel?
Both. Tell the advisor the board and the syllabus code on the exam entry, for example Cambridge Physics 0625 or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics, and the tutor plans against those papers. If you are not sure which one the school uses, the code appears on the school's exam entry and on any past paper the teacher has handed out.
Can my child switch from KSSM to IGCSE mid-year?
Many students do, and the content is rarely the obstacle. The harder adjustment is the style of the papers: shorter answers, command words and data questions in English. An advisor compares the KSSM topics the student has covered with the IGCSE specification, and the first classes close the specific gaps rather than restarting the subject.
Should my child sit Core or Extended?
The school makes the entry, but the ceiling is worth knowing: in Cambridge subjects with both tiers, Core allows grades C to G and Extended allows A* to E. If your child is aiming for an A, they need Extended, and tuition can cover the Extended-only content before the entry is confirmed.

Do you work through past papers and mark schemes?
Yes. Tutors use past papers from the same board and syllabus code and mark them the way the published mark schemes do. Students are often surprised by how specific the schemes are about wording, and learning that early saves marks in the real paper.
Are IGCSE classes taught only in English?
The classes are in English, because the papers are. A tutor can switch to Bahasa Melayu to explain a difficult idea to a student who has moved from a Malay-medium school, and then return to the English terms the paper will use.
