How the semester system changes revision
STPM is examined in three stages. Each subject has one paper per semester, sat at the end of that semester, and the three results combine into the final grade. A weak Semester 1 paper is not wiped out by a strong Semester 3; it is part of the grade from the day it is marked.
That makes the first semester the one to protect. Form 6 students arrive from SPM expecting a slow start and find a paper waiting for them within months. Tuition that begins in the second semester is working to recover a result that has already been banked.
Each semester therefore runs as its own short course. The tutor covers the semester's topics alongside the college, then turns to past papers and timing before the semester examination, and starts the next semester's topics only once the paper is sat. In Mathematics (T), for example, each semester's paper covers its own set of topics, and a student who leaves revision to the final month of Form 6 is partly revising for papers already sat.
Coursework, and what tuition can and cannot do
Most STPM subjects include school-based assessment, coursework or practical work done under the teacher's supervision, and it carries between 20 and 40 percent of the subject's marks. It is assessed as the student's own work.
A tutor can explain the mathematics or science a project depends on, check that the student understands their own method, and help them read the marking criteria. A tutor will not write any part of it. Coursework that is not the student's own is a risk to the whole result, and the understanding it builds is the point of it anyway.
Bahasa Melayu or English
The Mathematics (T), Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers are printed in both Bahasa Melayu and English, and a student can learn in either. Classes follow the language the student will answer in, and tutors use the terms from that version of the paper, so nothing needs translating in the examination hall.
For Ekonomi and Pengajian Am, tell the advisor which language the college teaches in, and the tutor is matched on that.
Grades and the CGPA universities read
Each STPM subject is graded from A to F, with grade points from 4.00 for an A down to 0.00. The overall CGPA averages the four best subjects, and Pengajian Am is one of them for anyone applying to a public university, where it is required alongside at least three other subjects.
Because the CGPA is an average, one weak subject pulls on everything else. When a student is strong in three subjects and struggling in the fourth, tuition in the weak subject usually does more for the CGPA than extra hours in the strong ones.
A question, worked through
A Semester 1 Mathematics (T) question on complex numbers. It is short, and it rewards the student who understands why multiplying by the conjugate works.
Express (3 + 4i)/(1 − 2i) in the form a + bi. Hence find its modulus and its argument, giving the argument in radians to three decimal places.
- Multiply the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate of the denominator, 1 + 2i. The denominator becomes (1 − 2i)(1 + 2i) = 1 + 4 = 5, a real number, which is the whole purpose of the step.
- Expand the numerator: (3 + 4i)(1 + 2i) = 3 + 6i + 4i + 8i² = 3 + 10i − 8 = −5 + 10i.
- Divide by 5: (−5 + 10i)/5 = −1 + 2i.
- The modulus is √((−1)² + 2²) = √5.
- For the argument, draw the point (−1, 2) first: it lies in the second quadrant, so the argument is π − tan⁻¹(2) = 3.1416 − 1.1071 = 2.034 radians. A calculator given tan⁻¹(2 ÷ −1) returns −1.107, which is in the wrong quadrant.
Answer: −1 + 2i, with modulus √5 and argument 2.034 radians.

How do universities read the STPM result?
Each subject earns a grade with a grade point, from 4.00 for an A down to 0.00 for an F, and the CGPA averages the four best subjects including Pengajian Am. Public universities require Pengajian Am and at least three other subjects, so a weak subject costs more than its own grade suggests.
Can one subject be taken 1-to-1 and another in a group?
Yes. A common arrangement is private classes for the subject pulling the CGPA down and a small group for a subject that needs steady practice. The advisor suggests a mix once they have seen the latest semester results.
