Skills carry the most predictable marks

Every form starts with geographical skills: direction, bearings, latitude and longitude and sketch maps in Form 1; scale, distance and topographic maps in Form 2; tables, graphs and pie charts in Form 3. These questions follow fixed methods, so they are the marks a student can count on once the method is practised.

Topographic maps are where students most often struggle. Reading contours, identifying landforms from their pattern, and measuring distance along a winding road all take practice with real map extracts. Tutors share a map on screen and have the student find, measure and describe, one feature at a time, before any exam question is attempted.

Physical and human geography

The rest of the syllabus links the physical world to people: landforms and drainage to where settlements grow, climate to farming and transport across Asia, natural resources to economic activities. Students who learn these as cause and effect, for example why rice is grown on floodplains or why ports grow at river mouths, answer the explain-type questions far better than students who learn lists.

Environmental chapters, such as domestic waste, global warming, green technology and recycling, ask for causes, effects and solutions. Tutors teach a simple frame for these answers so that every point is a full sentence with a reason.

Answering in Bahasa Melayu

Geografi is taught and answered in Bahasa Melayu at national schools, with its own terms: garisan kontur, bearing sudutan, kawasan tadahan, pemanasan global. For students who think in English, tutors explain the concept first, then practise the Malay answer with the terms the marking expects.

A question, worked through

A Form 2 question on scale and distance, the skill behind every topographic map question. Converting the scale first makes the rest a single multiplication.

Question

Pada sebuah peta berskala 1 : 50 000, jarak antara sebuah sekolah dengan sebuah masjid ialah 6 cm. Berapakah jarak sebenar dalam kilometer?

  1. Read the scale: 1 cm on the map stands for 50 000 cm on the ground.
  2. Convert to kilometres: 50 000 cm = 500 m = 0.5 km, so 1 cm on the map is 0.5 km.
  3. Multiply by the map distance: 6 × 0.5 km = 3 km.
  4. Check the other way: 6 cm × 50 000 = 300 000 cm, and 300 000 cm ÷ 100 000 = 3 km.

Answer Jarak sebenar ialah 3 km.

Frequently asked questions

Is Geografi compulsory in Form 1 to 3?

Yes, Geografi is a core subject in lower secondary, so every student takes it in Form 1, 2 and 3. In Form 4 and Form 5 it becomes an elective.

My child finds topographic maps hard. Can that be fixed?

Usually quickly. Topographic map questions follow fixed methods, and practising with real map extracts, one skill at a time, makes them some of the most dependable marks in the paper.

Is Geografi taught in English?

At national schools Geografi is taught and answered in Bahasa Melayu, so classes are in Bahasa Melayu. Tutors explain difficult concepts in English for students who need it.

How much does Form 1 to 3 Geografi tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor your child's form and the latest Geografi result on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
