Where students lose marks in IGCSE Biology
Command words decide the shape of an answer. "Describe" a graph wants the trend with figures quoted from it; "explain" the same graph wants the biology that causes the trend. Students who describe when asked to explain, or the other way round, lose marks on answers that contain no mistakes.
Key terms are marked by name. An answer on osmosis that talks about water "going into" a cell without mentioning a partially permeable membrane or water potential falls short of the mark scheme, however well the student understands the idea. Tutors build a short list of must-use terms for each topic and test them until they appear without prompting.
Data questions are the other steady source of lost marks. Graphs, tables and unfamiliar experiments appear in every paper, and students who have only revised content find them hardest. They improve quickly once they practise reading a graph for its trend, its anomalies and its numbers before answering.
Extended content and the practical paper
Extended candidates learn supplementary material inside most topics, and it is where the harder questions come from. Tutors mark the Extended material clearly in their plan so a student aiming for an A or A* is not surprised by it in the mock examinations.
The practical test and the Alternative to Practical examine planning an investigation, recording results, drawing graphs and suggesting improvements. Food tests, enzyme experiments and osmosis investigations turn up often, so students practise writing each one up, variables and controls included.

A question, worked through
A question in the style of 0610 on movement into and out of cells. The calculation is quick, and the explanation is where students gain or lose most of the marks.
A cylinder of potato tissue with a mass of 2.50 g is placed in a concentrated sugar solution for 30 minutes. Its mass falls to 2.20 g. Calculate the percentage change in mass, and explain the change.
- Find the change in mass: 2.20 − 2.50 = −0.30 g. Keep the sign, because it shows the direction of the change.
- Percentage change = change in mass ÷ original mass × 100 = −0.30 ÷ 2.50 × 100 = −12%.
- Explain with the process, the direction and the membrane: water moved out of the potato cells by osmosis, from a higher water potential inside the cells to a lower water potential in the concentrated solution, through the partially permeable cell membranes.
Answer: The mass decreased by 12%, because the cells lost water by osmosis to the more concentrated solution.
