What Cambridge IGCSE Physics covers

The six content areas of the 0625 syllabus. Each has Core material and Extended material, and a student entered for Extended is examined on both.

Syllabus topics (0625)

  1. Motion, forces and energy
  2. Thermal physics
  3. Waves
  4. Electricity and magnetism
  5. Nuclear physics
  6. Space physics

Where students lose marks in IGCSE Physics

Calculations lose marks on small things: an equation not written before the numbers go in, a unit missing from the final answer, or an answer given to more significant figures than the data support. None of these is about understanding, and all of them are fixed by setting out every calculation the same way until it is habit.

Explanations lose marks by being vague. A question asking why a metal spoon feels colder than a wooden one wants the idea of thermal conduction and the direction of energy transfer, stated plainly. Students who describe what they would feel instead of what the energy does get little credit, so tutors teach the physics vocabulary each explanation needs.

The practical paper

Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test in the laboratory or an Alternative to Practical paper that examines the same skills in writing. Both ask for the same habits: a results table with units in the column headings, readings to a consistent precision, a graph with a sensible scale and a straight line of best fit, and a conclusion that actually follows from the data.

These habits are learnable and they carry a real share of the grade, which makes the practical paper one of the most efficient places to gain marks. Tutors practise it with past papers from Year 10 onwards rather than in the final weeks.

How an IGCSE Physics class runs

Each class follows the topic the school is on. The tutor starts with a short question on the previous class to check what stuck, explains the new idea with a diagram before any equation, and then sets questions in the style of the student's own board, watching the working on a shared screen and correcting it as it happens.

Between classes the student does a small set of past-paper questions on the same topic. The next class opens with whichever of them went wrong, so mistakes are dealt with while the topic is still fresh instead of resurfacing in the mock examinations.

Who teaches IGCSE Physics

Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, who are matched to the student's board, syllabus code and tier. An academic advisor asks for the entry details and the latest school report before proposing a tutor, since Cambridge 0625 and Pearson Edexcel Physics differ in structure and in how marks are awarded.

A question, worked through

A question in the style of 0625 on energy, work and power, from the topic Motion, forces and energy. It joins two formulas that students usually meet in different weeks.

An electric motor lifts a load of mass 12 kg through a height of 3.0 m in 4.0 s. The motor draws a current of 5.0 A from a 24 V supply. Calculate the efficiency of the motor. (g = 9.8 N/kg)

  1. The useful energy output is the gain in gravitational potential energy: mgh = 12 × 9.8 × 3.0 = 352.8 J.
  2. The electrical energy input over the same 4.0 s is E = VIt = 24 × 5.0 × 4.0 = 480 J.
  3. Efficiency = useful energy output ÷ total energy input × 100% = 352.8 ÷ 480 × 100% = 73.5%.
  4. Round to match the data, which are given to two significant figures: 74%.

Answer: The motor is about 74% efficient.

Frequently asked questions

Do you teach Cambridge 0625 or Pearson Edexcel Physics?

Both. Tell the advisor the board and the code on the exam entry and the tutor plans against those papers. The two specifications cover similar physics but differ in paper structure and in how the practical skills are examined.

Should my child sit Core or Extended?

The school makes the entry, but on Cambridge 0625 only Extended gives access to grades above C. A student aiming for an A needs the Extended material, and tuition can cover it before the entry is confirmed.

How much does IGCSE Physics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how often classes run and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Message us on WhatsApp with the board, the exam session and the latest report, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.

When should IGCSE Physics tuition start?

At the start of the two-year course if the student is already finding the mathematics in Physics difficult, since that gap widens quickly once electricity and waves arrive. Otherwise, a term before the mock examinations is a common and sensible point to begin.

Does tuition cover the practical paper?

Yes. The Alternative to Practical and the practical test examine skills that improve quickly with practice, such as recording results, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions, so tutors include them regularly.

Tell us what the student needs

Send an academic advisor the level, the subjects and what is going wrong. You will get a tutor recommendation and current packages back, usually within one working day.
