What SPM Biology covers
Form 4 moves from the cell to the human body; Form 5 turns to plants, ecosystems and inheritance. At 28 chapters it has more chapters than any other SPM science, which is why revision has to start well before the final year.
Form 4
- Introduction to Biology and Laboratory Rules
- Cell Biology and Cell Organisation
- Movement of Substances across a Plasma Membrane
- Chemical Composition in a Cell
- Metabolism and Enzymes
- Cell Division
- Cellular Respiration
- Respiratory Systems in Humans and Animals
- Nutrition and the Human Digestive System
- Transport in Humans and Animals
- Immunity in Humans
- Coordination and Response in Humans
- Homeostasis and the Human Urinary System
- Support and Movement in Humans and Animals
- Sexual Reproduction, Development and Growth in Humans and Animals
Form 5
- Organisation of Plant Tissues and Growth
- Leaf Structure and Function
- Nutrition in Plants
- Transport in Plants
- Response in Plants
- Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants
- Adaptations of Plants in Different Habitats
- Biodiversity
- Ecosystem
- Environmental Sustainability
- Inheritance
- Variation
- Genetic Technology
Where students lose marks in Biology
Biology rewards precise explanation, and that is where most marks go missing. A structured question on why a plant cell becomes turgid is marked on specific points: water moving in by osmosis, the cell wall resisting the pressure, the vacuole swelling against it. A student who writes a fluent paragraph that misses those points collects very little.
The essay questions in Paper 2 raise the stakes. They ask a student to explain a process or compare two structures in several points, and the mark scheme counts the points. Tutors teach students to plan the points before writing, which turns a long answer into a list of claims an examiner can tick.
Diagrams are marked too. A labelled drawing of the heart or a flower earns its marks for accurate labels in the right places, so students practise drawing them from memory instead of only recognising them.
Revising 28 chapters without drowning
The length of the syllabus is its own difficulty. A student who revises Form 4 for the first time during Form 5 finds there is no room left, so tutors revisit each Form 4 chapter briefly as Form 5 goes on, linking them where the syllabus does: transport in plants alongside transport in humans, nutrition in plants alongside the human digestive system.
Revision is active rather than rereading. Students close the notes and explain a process aloud, draw a structure from memory, or answer a past-year essay question, and the tutor corrects the gaps. Rereading feels productive and leaves very little behind a week later.

A question, worked through
An SPM-style question from the Form 5 chapter Inheritance. The genetics is short, and the marks go to a genetic diagram an examiner can follow from parents to offspring.
A man with blood group A has the genotype IᴬIᴼ, and a woman with blood group B has the genotype IᴮIᴼ. Using a genetic diagram, find the possible blood groups of their children and the probability of each.
- Write each parent's genotype and the gametes it produces: the man gives Iᴬ or Iᴼ, and the woman gives Iᴮ or Iᴼ.
- Combine every gamete from one parent with every gamete from the other: IᴬIᴮ, IᴬIᴼ, IᴮIᴼ and IᴼIᴼ.
- Turn each genotype into a blood group. Iᴬ and Iᴮ are codominant, so IᴬIᴮ is group AB. Iᴼ is recessive, so IᴬIᴼ is group A, IᴮIᴼ is group B and IᴼIᴼ is group O.
- The four combinations are equally likely, so each blood group has a probability of one in four.
Answer: A child could have blood group A, B, AB or O, each with a probability of 1/4.
Frequently asked questions
When should Biology tuition start?
In Form 4. The syllabus is too long to learn for the first time in Form 5, and the early chapters on cells and membranes are the ones later chapters explain everything with. A student who starts in Form 5 can still catch up, with a plan that revisits Form 4 chapters in short, regular pieces.
Is the class in English or Bahasa Melayu?
Whichever the school uses. DLP students are taught in English, and students who sit Biologi in Bahasa Melayu are taught in Bahasa Melayu with the syllabus terms, such as osmosis, pembahagian sel and pewarisan, so the class matches the paper.
How much does SPM Biology tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how often classes run and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Message us on WhatsApp with your child's form and latest Biology result, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
Do you help with the essay questions?
Yes. Tutors teach students to plan the marking points before they write, then mark practice essays the way the scheme does, one point at a time. It is often the quickest way to add marks in Biology.
Is Biology just memorising?
Memory helps, but the marks go to explanation: why a process happens, what would change if a condition changed, how a structure suits its job. Students who understand the mechanism remember it with far less effort than students who learn the notes word for word.
