What SPM Physics covers

The KSSM textbook chapters in teaching order. Form 5 builds directly on Form 4: Force and Motion II picks up where Force and Motion I stops, and Electricity leans on the measurement skills of the first chapter.

Form 4

  1. Measurement
  2. Force and Motion I
  3. Gravitation
  4. Heat
  5. Waves
  6. Light and Optics

Form 5

  1. Force and Motion II
  2. Pressure
  3. Electricity
  4. Electromagnetism
  5. Electronics
  6. Nuclear Physics
  7. Quantum Physics

Where students lose marks in Physics

Definitions are marked on their key words. A student who explains momentum or pressure in loose, everyday phrasing can understand it perfectly and still miss the mark, because the scheme looks for the physical quantities by name. Tutors have students say definitions aloud until the exact wording comes without effort.

Calculations lose marks on the way to the answer: a formula written without the substitution, a unit left off, or a mass kept in grams where the equation expects kilograms. The working is set out the same way every time, so that nothing depends on remembering to be careful.

The longer Paper 2 questions ask students to explain a situation and then suggest how a design could be improved, such as a better material for a cooking pot or a better shape for a racing car. The marks go to suggestions paired with reasons. A list of good ideas with no reasons earns half of what it could.

Paper 3 and the experiment questions

Paper 3 examines experimental skills: identifying the variables, recording readings in a table with the right units, plotting a graph with a sensible scale, and stating the relationship the data shows. It rewards method more than insight, which makes it the most improvable paper in the subject.

Tutors bring the Paper 3 question types into classes from Form 4 onwards, instead of saving them for the final month, so that drawing a line of best fit and reading a gradient become routine by the time the trial examinations arrive.

How a Physics class runs

Concepts come before equations. A tutor draws the situation first, asks the student to predict what happens, and only then brings in the formula, so the equation describes something the student can already picture. Electricity and Electromagnetism in Form 5 respond particularly well to this, since students who memorise rules without a picture of the field tend to mix them up under pressure.

Who teaches

Mifzal Salihin

Universiti Malaya, then Imperial College London

9A+ in SPM; First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering

Founder of Afterkelas. Taught SPM Physics one-to-one to DLP students in the platform's early years, and the Physics tutors who teach today are recruited against the standard he set.

A question, worked through

An SPM-style question from the Form 4 chapter Force and Motion I. The first half is routine. The second half asks why the answer does not break a law the student has just used.

A car of mass 1200 kg moving at 20 m s⁻¹ collides with a stationary car of mass 800 kg, and the two cars move off together. Find their common velocity and the kinetic energy lost in the collision.

  1. Momentum is conserved in the collision, so total momentum before equals total momentum after: (1200)(20) + (800)(0) = (1200 + 800)v.
  2. Solve for v: 24 000 = 2000v, so v = 12 m s⁻¹.
  3. Kinetic energy before: ½ × 1200 × 20² = 240 000 J. Kinetic energy after: ½ × 2000 × 12² = 144 000 J.
  4. Kinetic energy lost = 240 000 − 144 000 = 96 000 J. Momentum is conserved and kinetic energy is not: the missing energy has gone into bending metal, heat and sound. Saying so in a sentence often earns a mark of its own.

Answer: The cars move off together at 12 m s⁻¹, and 96 000 J of kinetic energy is lost.

Frequently asked questions

When should Physics tuition start?

In Form 4, while the first chapters are being taught. Measurement and Force and Motion I set up the vocabulary and the calculation habits the rest of the syllabus uses, and a student who is shaky there by the middle of Form 4 usually struggles again in Form 5 Electricity.

Is the class in English or Bahasa Melayu?

Whichever the school uses. DLP students are taught in English, and students who sit Fizik in Bahasa Melayu are taught in Bahasa Melayu with the syllabus terms, such as daya, momentum and keelektromagnetan, so nothing needs translating in the examination.

How much does SPM Physics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how often classes run and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Message us on WhatsApp with your child's form and latest Physics result, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.

Do you cover Paper 3?

Yes, from Form 4. The experiment questions reward practice more than any other part of the subject, so tutors work through them regularly instead of leaving them to the weeks before SPM.

My child understands Physics in class but fails the tests. Why?

Usually because the marks depend on wording and working as much as on understanding. Definitions have key words, calculations need every stage shown with units, and the long questions want reasons attached to each point. A tutor reading the child's last test paper can normally see which of these is costing the marks within one class.
