What SPM Chemistry covers
The KSSM textbook chapters in teaching order. The mole concept in Form 4 Chapter 3 is the one to secure early, because the calculations in rate of reaction, redox and thermochemistry all use it.
Form 4
- Introduction to Chemistry
- Matter and the Atomic Structure
- The Mole Concept, Chemical Formula and Equation
- The Periodic Table of Elements
- Chemical Bond
- Acid, Base and Salt
- Rate of Reaction
- Manufactured Substances in Industry
Form 5
- Redox Equilibrium
- Carbon Compound
- Thermochemistry
- Polymer
- Consumer and Industrial Chemistry
Where students lose marks in Chemistry
Chemistry looks like a subject of facts, and students revise it that way. Most of the marks, though, sit in questions that recall alone does not answer.
The mole concept is the most expensive of these to get wrong. It arrives in Form 4 and never leaves: finding the mass of a product, the volume of a gas, the concentration of a solution and the heat released in a reaction all run through the same few steps. A student who is unsure of those steps loses marks in chapters that seem to have nothing to do with them.
Explanations are the other leak. A question on why a powder reacts faster than a lump, or why a solution conducts electricity, is marked on specific ideas: collision frequency and effective collisions in the first case, free-moving ions in the second. Students who write a sensible paragraph without those ideas get little for it.
Equations, ions and Carbon Compound
Balanced equations and ionic equations run through the whole syllabus, and tutors drill them until they are automatic, since an unbalanced equation spoils every calculation built on it. The Form 5 chapter Carbon Compound adds a second vocabulary, the names and reactions of homologous series, and it is the chapter where steady practice beats last-minute memorising most clearly.
Who teaches Chemistry
Chemistry tutors are university students and graduates who scored top grades in SPM Chemistry, screened before they teach. An academic advisor matches each student on the school's medium, DLP or Bahasa Melayu, on how far the school has got through the syllabus, and on the timetable, so the tutor teaches the same terms the student will see in the paper.
A question, worked through
An SPM-style calculation from Form 4 Chapter 3, The Mole Concept, Chemical Formula and Equation. Later calculations in Chemistry, from rate of reaction to thermochemistry, repeat the same moves.
Copper(II) oxide reacts with sulphuric acid: CuO + H₂SO₄ → CuSO₄ + H₂O. Calculate the mass of copper(II) oxide that reacts completely with 50 cm³ of 2.0 mol dm⁻³ sulphuric acid. [Relative atomic mass: Cu = 64, O = 16]
- Find the moles of acid from its volume and concentration. Convert the volume to dm³ first: 50 cm³ = 0.050 dm³, so moles of H₂SO₄ = 2.0 × 0.050 = 0.10 mol.
- Read the ratio from the balanced equation: 1 mol of CuO reacts with 1 mol of H₂SO₄, so 0.10 mol of CuO is needed.
- Find the molar mass of CuO: 64 + 16 = 80 g mol⁻¹.
- Mass = moles × molar mass = 0.10 × 80 = 8.0 g.
Answer: 8.0 g of copper(II) oxide.
Frequently asked questions
When should Chemistry tuition start?
Before Form 4 Chapter 3, The Mole Concept, if possible. The first two chapters are gentle, and the mole concept is where students either settle into the subject or start to fall behind. A student who arrives later begins with the mole, whatever chapter the school is on.
Is the class in English or Bahasa Melayu?
Whichever the school uses. DLP students are taught in English, and students who sit Kimia in Bahasa Melayu are taught in Bahasa Melayu with the syllabus terms, such as konsep mol, ikatan kimia and sebatian karbon, so the class matches the paper.
How much does SPM Chemistry tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how often classes run and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Message us on WhatsApp with your child's form and latest Chemistry result, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
My child memorises the notes but still loses marks. Why?
Because much of the paper tests calculation and explanation, and notes only carry the facts. An explanation has to use particles and ions to earn its marks. A tutor looking at the last test paper can usually see which of these is costing the marks, and classes go there.
Do you cover the experiment questions?
Yes. Paper 3 and the practical parts of Paper 2 reward knowing how an experiment is set up, what is measured and how results are recorded, and tutors practise those question types throughout Form 4 and Form 5.
