Karangan: content first
The longer essay in Kertas 1 carries most of that paper's marks, and its marks follow the content. An essay with clear points, each explained and supported with an example, scores better than a longer one that circles the same idea. Tutors teach students to plan the points before writing, link them with penanda wacana, and add a peribahasa or two where it fits naturally, not as decoration.
The stimulus essay is shorter and tighter. It asks students to use the material given, a chart, a notice or a short text, and the marks go to using that material accurately within the word range.
Rumusan and tatabahasa
The rumusan asks for the points of a passage on two aspects, in no more than 120 words. Students lose marks by copying whole sentences, by including examples and explanations, and by running over the limit. Tutors practise finding the points first, rewriting each one in a shorter sentence, and counting before handing it in.
The sistem bahasa section tests morfologi and sintaksis directly: choosing the right imbuhan, correcting sentences, and using peribahasa correctly. These are learnable marks, and a running list of each student's own errors, revisited weekly, closes the gaps fastest.
KOMSAS, the novel and the certificate
Kertas 2 includes a literary passage and questions on the assigned novel, which differs between states. Students need to know their novel's themes, characters, values and lessons, each with an example from the text, so tell the academic advisor which novel the school uses.
Bahasa Melayu is one of the two subjects, with Sejarah, that a candidate must pass to receive the SPM certificate, and many university programmes and jobs look for a credit in it. For students from English-speaking homes, that makes it worth starting early.

A shortened rumusan task. The real passage is longer and the limit is 120 words, but the method is the same: find the points, drop the examples, rewrite and count.

- Find the points for each aspect. Benefits: a stronger heart and muscles that keep illness away; learning to cooperate and accept decisions; less exposure to social problems. Ways to encourage: parents exercising with their children at weekends; schools holding more inter-class competitions.
- Drop what is not asked for. The sentence on gadgets explains a problem, not a benefit or a way to encourage, so it stays out.
- Rewrite each point in a short sentence of your own, joined with penanda wacana such as "selain itu" and "manakala".
- Count the words. The model answer uses 48, within the limit of 60.
Answer Bersukan menguatkan jantung dan otot remaja serta menjauhkan mereka daripada penyakit. Remaja juga belajar bekerjasama dan menghormati keputusan.
