SPM English Tuition Online (1119), Form 4 and Form 5
The CEFR-aligned SPM English paper practised part by part: reading, the three writing tasks, speaking in pairs and listening.
Afterkelas teaches SPM English (1119) online to Form 4 and Form 5 students on the CEFR-aligned KSSM syllabus. Screened university tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across all four papers, with every piece of writing marked against its task.
What SPM English covers
The four papers of the 1119 format, and the skills each one tests. The syllabus also includes Literature in Action, taught in class alongside the four skills.
Papers and skills
6 topics- Paper 1, Reading: five parts and 40 questions
- Paper 2, Writing: a short message, a guided piece and an extended piece
- Paper 3, Speaking: individual turns and a discussion with a partner
- Paper 4, Listening: recordings with short answers
- Grammar and vocabulary in context
- Literature in Action: poems, short stories and drama
Writing: three tasks, three shapes
The writing paper asks for three pieces of different lengths. The first is a short message under 80 words, where every point in the prompt has to appear. The second is a piece of 125 to 150 words built from given notes, in a format the task names. The third is a longer piece of 200 to 250 words, chosen from three options.
Marks go first to doing what the task asks, then to organisation and the range of language. A long, fluent answer that misses one of the prompt's points or ignores the word range loses marks a shorter, complete answer keeps. Tutors mark every practice piece against the task before they comment on the English.
Reading and listening
Paper 1 has five parts and 40 questions that test skimming, scanning, inference and the meaning of words in context. Students who read every word in order run short of time, so tutors teach when to read for gist and when to hunt for a detail.
The listening paper rewards prediction. Before a recording plays, students read the questions and guess the kind of answer each needs, a number, a place, a reason, which makes the answer easier to catch on the first hearing.
Speaking in pairs
The speaking test is taken with another candidate: short individual answers, a longer turn on a topic, and a discussion with the partner. Students who know the answer but stop after one sentence lose marks. Tutors practise extending each answer with a reason and an example, and play the partner in the discussion so the student learns to agree, disagree and ask a question back.
A question, worked through
A guided writing task of the 125 to 150 word kind. The plan below covers every content point before any sentence is written, which is where most lost marks are saved.
Question
Your school is starting a recycling club. Write an email of 125 to 150 words to your principal suggesting two activities for the club, saying how each will help, and asking for one thing the club needs.
- Underline the content points: two activities, how each helps, and one request. Each is marked, so each gets a sentence or two.
- Set the register. An email to the principal is formal: a polite greeting, no contractions, and a courteous close.
- Plan four short paragraphs: why you are writing; the two activities and their benefits; the request; a closing line.
- Write within 125 to 150 words, then check that every content point appears before checking the grammar.
Answer A plan that covers every point. Opening: writing on behalf of Form 4 students about the new recycling club. Paragraph 2: a weekly collection of paper and bottles from every class, which keeps waste out of the bins, and a monthly competition between classes, which keeps students interested. Paragraph 3: a request for three recycling bins for the canteen. Closing: thanks, and an offer to explain the plan in person.
Frequently asked questions
My child writes long essays but scores low. Why?
The writing paper rewards answering every part of the task, in the right format and word range, before it rewards length. Planning for two minutes and checking the task points afterwards usually lifts the marks faster than writing more.
Can tuition help with the speaking test?
Yes. Tutors practise the individual turns and play the partner in the discussion, so the student learns to extend answers, give reasons and respond to someone else, which is what the test marks.
When should SPM English tuition start?
Form 4 gives two years to build reading speed and writing habits, which grow slowly. Students who start in Form 5 focus on the task formats and timed practice, which bring the quickest gains.
How much does SPM English tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor your child's form and a recent piece of their writing on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
