SPM Science Tuition Online (Sains 1511), Form 4 and Form 5
The general SPM Science subject for students outside the pure science stream: 21 KSSM chapters across biology, chemistry, physics and space.
Afterkelas teaches SPM Science (Sains, 1511) online to Form 4 and Form 5 students outside the pure science stream, on the KSSM syllabus. Screened university tutors teach live, 1-to-1 or in small groups, in English for DLP students or in Bahasa Melayu.
What SPM Science covers
The KSSM chapters of each form, in teaching order and named in English; the Malay page lists the textbook's Malay titles. Each chapter is short and the range is wide, so steady revision matters more than depth.
Form 4
12 topics- Safety in the laboratory
- Emergency aid
- Measuring body health parameters
- Green technology for a sustainable environment
- Genetics
- Support, movement and growth
- Body coordination
- Elements and substances
- Industrial chemistry
- Chemistry in medicine and health
- Force and motion
- Nuclear energy
Form 5
9 topics- Microorganisms
- Nutrition and food technology
- Sustainability of the environment
- Rate of reaction
- Carbon compounds
- Electrochemistry
- Light and optics
- Force and pressure
- Space technology
A science subject for students outside the science stream
Students who do not take Physics, Chemistry and Biology sit Science instead. It covers a little of each, from genetics and body coordination to industrial chemistry, nuclear energy and space technology, and many students in other streams treat it as the subject they can leave until last.
It still carries a full SPM grade, and with 21 short chapters across two years it rewards steady revision far more than a burst before the exam. Tutors follow the school's chapter order and come back to earlier chapters in short reviews, so Form 4 is not forgotten by the trial examinations.
Where marks are lost
Paper 2 decides the grade. Its structured questions ask students to explain an observation, read a table or a graph, and apply an idea to a situation they have not seen, and its last section asks for a longer open response. Students who memorise definitions do well on Paper 1 and stall on Paper 2.
Calculations are few, and they turn up in predictable places: pressure, rate of reaction, and energy and power. Tutors make sure each formula is written out, values are substituted with units, and the answer is checked for size before moving on.
Explanations lose marks when they stop halfway. "The rate increases because of temperature" earns less than "at a higher temperature the particles move faster and collide more often, so the rate increases". Students practise the full chain until it becomes the way they write.
Taught in the language of the paper
DLP students sit Science in English and other students sit it in Bahasa Melayu. Tutors teach in the language of the paper with the textbook's terms, so the student never has to translate a term in the exam hall.
A question, worked through
An SPM-style question from the Form 5 chapter on force and pressure. The arithmetic takes a line; the explanation in part (b) is where students lose the mark.
Question
A box with a weight of 600 N rests on the floor on a face measuring 0.5 m by 0.4 m. (a) Calculate the pressure the box exerts on the floor. (b) The box is turned to rest on a face measuring 0.4 m by 0.2 m. Calculate the new pressure and explain the change.
- Pressure is force per unit area: P = F ÷ A.
- For (a), the area is 0.5 m × 0.4 m = 0.2 m², so P = 600 N ÷ 0.2 m² = 3000 Pa.
- For (b), the area is 0.4 m × 0.2 m = 0.08 m², so P = 600 N ÷ 0.08 m² = 7500 Pa.
- The force has not changed, because the box weighs the same. The area is smaller, so the same force acts on less floor and the pressure rises. The same idea explains why a sharp knife cuts more easily than a blunt one.
Answer (a) 3000 Pa. (b) 7500 Pa: the same force acts on a smaller area, so the pressure is greater.
Frequently asked questions
Who takes SPM Science?
Students who do not take Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It is one subject covering parts of all three, plus health and space topics, and it carries a full SPM grade of its own.
Is SPM Science easier than the pure sciences?
Each chapter is shorter and less deep, but the paper still asks for explanations and data reading, and there are 21 chapters to cover. Students who revise it steadily usually do well; students who leave it to the last month often find there is too much of it.
Is the class in English or Bahasa Melayu?
Whichever the school uses. DLP students are taught in English, and students who sit Sains in Bahasa Melayu are taught in Bahasa Melayu with the textbook's terms.
How much does SPM Science tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor your child's form, the language the school teaches Science in and the latest result on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
