Afterkelas teaches IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation online at SL and HL. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, on the five topics, modelling with the calculator, and the mathematical exploration.

What IB Maths AI covers

The five topic headings of the guide, the same as in Analysis and Approaches, with the weight on modelling and statistics. HL adds matrices and eigenvalues, complex numbers, graph theory and more work on differential equations.

Five topics, SL and HL

5 topics
  1. Number and algebra
  2. Functions
  3. Geometry and trigonometry
  4. Statistics and probability
  5. Calculus

Mathematics in context

Applications and Interpretation treats mathematics as a tool for real situations: financial calculations, models of growth and decay, statistics and hypothesis tests, and Voronoi diagrams among them. Every paper needs the graphic display calculator, so the skills being tested are choosing the right model, using the technology well and interpreting the answer.

At HL the course adds matrices and eigenvalues, complex numbers, graph theory and more differential equations, then tests problem solving in Paper 3. Tutors make sure students can explain what each number means in context, which is where AI marks are often won or lost.

Where marks are lost

Calculator answers lose marks when the method is not shown: the model chosen, the values entered and why the result makes sense. Answers given to the wrong accuracy or without units also cost marks. Students practise writing a line of working before every calculator step.

The exploration

The mathematical exploration is the same task as in Analysis and Approaches: a piece of written work investigating an area of mathematics, worth 20 percent at both levels. A tutor can help check that the mathematics is correct and at the right level, and explain the criteria, but the topic, the investigation and the writing are the student's own.

A question, worked through

A question on exponential models, from the functions topic. The calculator does the arithmetic; the marks go to setting up the model and reading the result.

Question

A culture of 2000 bacteria grows by 15% every hour. (a) Write a model for the number of bacteria N after t hours. (b) Find N after 6 hours. (c) Find when the culture first exceeds 10 000 bacteria.

  1. (a) Growth of 15% means multiplying by 1.15 each hour: N = 2000 × 1.15ᵗ.
  2. (b) N = 2000 × 1.15⁶ = 2000 × 2.3131 = 4626, to the nearest whole number.
  3. (c) Solve 2000 × 1.15ᵗ = 10 000: 1.15ᵗ = 5, so t = ln 5 ÷ ln 1.15 = 11.5.
  4. The culture first exceeds 10 000 bacteria after about 11.5 hours, during the twelfth hour.

Answer (a) N = 2000 × 1.15ᵗ. (b) About 4626 bacteria. (c) After about 11.5 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI the easier IB maths course?

Not necessarily. AI uses less algebra by hand but asks for more modelling, statistics and interpretation, and AI HL is a demanding course. Check which course the degrees your child is aiming for accept.

Does every AI paper allow a calculator?

Yes. All AI papers require a graphic display calculator, so using it fluently is part of the preparation.

When should IB Maths AI tuition start?

Early in the first year, while functions and statistics are taught, since the modelling work builds on them.

How much does IB Maths AI tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the level, the school and the latest predicted grade on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
