IB Diploma Tuition Online: HL and SL Subjects
Online classes for the two-year IB Diploma Programme, subject by subject at HL and SL, including the papers and the internal assessments.
Afterkelas teaches the IB Diploma Programme online to students at international schools, in Maths, the sciences, Economics and Business Management. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, at HL and SL.
Subjects we teach for the IB Diploma
Maths and the sciences are the core of our IB work, with Economics and Business Management alongside. Each subject below has its own page with its syllabus, its papers and internal assessment, and a worked question.
IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at SL and HL: five topics, one paper without a calculator, one with, Paper 3 at HL, and the exploration.
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at SL and HL: modelling and statistics across five topics, a calculator in every paper, and the exploration.
IB Physics at SL and HL, first assessed in 2025: five themes from motion to quantum physics, two papers and a scientific investigation.
IB Chemistry at SL and HL, first assessed in 2025: the Structure and Reactivity strands, two papers and a scientific investigation.
IB Biology at SL and HL, first assessed in 2025: four themes studied at four levels, from molecules to ecosystems, two papers and a scientific investigation.
IB Economics at SL and HL, first assessed in 2022: microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, the essay and data papers, Paper 3 at HL, and the commentaries.
IB Business Management at SL and HL, first assessed in 2024: five units from human resources to operations, case study papers, Paper 3 at HL, and the research project.
Six subjects, two levels, one core
Students take one subject from each of the six subject groups, or a second subject from another group in place of the arts, with normally three at higher level and the rest at standard level. The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for an HL course and 150 for SL, and HL adds both depth and extra topics. Alongside the subjects sits the core: Theory of Knowledge, the extended essay, and creativity, activity, service.
Students can take only one mathematics course, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, so the choice is worth making with university entry requirements in mind.
How the 45 points add up
Each subject is graded from 1 to 7, and Theory of Knowledge and the extended essay together add up to 3 more points, so the maximum is 45. The diploma needs at least 24 points along with further conditions, including completing CAS.
University offers are usually set as a total plus grades in particular HL subjects, so a weak HL grade can matter more than the total suggests. Tuition aimed at that subject often does the most for the offer.
Internal assessment counts
Every subject has a piece of internally assessed work, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB: the mathematical exploration, the scientific investigation, the economics commentaries, the business research project. It counts for 20 to 30 percent of the subject grade.
A tutor can explain the concepts, the criteria and how to structure the work, but the work itself is the student's own and is submitted under the IB's academic integrity rules.
Papers that reward exact answers
IB papers use command terms such as "explain", "determine" and "evaluate", and mark schemes reward answers that do what the term asks. Tutors work through exam-style questions with mark schemes beside them, so students learn what each command term needs and where the marks sit.
A question, worked through
A calculus question of the kind both IB maths courses ask: the tangent to a curve.
Question
Find the equation of the tangent to the curve y = x³ − 3x at the point where x = 2.
- Find the point: when x = 2, y = 2³ − 3(2) = 8 − 6 = 2, so the point is (2, 2).
- Differentiate: dy/dx = 3x² − 3.
- The gradient at x = 2 is 3(4) − 3 = 9.
- Tangent: y − 2 = 9(x − 2), which simplifies to y = 9x − 16.
Answer y = 9x − 16.
Frequently asked questions
Which IB maths course should my child take?
Analysis and Approaches suits students heading for mathematics, physics, engineering or economics degrees, with more algebra and calculus done by hand. Applications and Interpretation suits those heading for the social or life sciences and business, with more statistics and modelling on a calculator. Requirements differ between universities, so check the degrees your child is aiming for.
Do you help with internal assessments and the extended essay?
With the understanding behind them, yes: the tutor explains the concepts, the criteria and how to structure the work. A tutor does not write any part of an internal assessment or extended essay, which must be the student's own work.
When should IB tuition start?
Early in the first year, when the HL topics start to build on one another. Help is also useful before internal assessment deadlines and in the months before the final examinations.
Do you teach both HL and SL?
Yes. The tutor follows the level the student takes, including the HL-only topics and Paper 3 where a subject has one.
Can one subject be 1-to-1 and another in a group?
Yes. A common arrangement is private classes for the subject holding the predicted grades down and a small group for one that needs steady practice. The advisor suggests a mix after seeing the latest results.
How much does IB tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the subjects, the levels and the latest predicted grades on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
