Government and government-aided schools in every Malaysian state open on Monday 4 January 2027, and close for the year on Thursday 2 or Friday 3 December. The Ministry of Education (KPM) published the full 2027 academic calendar on the night of Friday 2 October 2026: four breaks for each of the two state groups, and a separate table of extra festive holidays.[1]
Read those dates next to the 2027 public holidays and the year takes a different shape. Chinese New Year closes schools for nine or ten days in February. Hari Raya Puasa falls inside the March break. In May, Hari Raya Haji, Wesak and the mid-year break run into one another, and most children are home for more than three weeks.
This guide sets out every date for Group A and Group B, explains the festive days and public holidays, and ends with what 2027 means for parents, teachers and students. It draws on KPM's calendar and the government's official holiday list, both linked in the notes. Afterkelas is an online tuition school, not part of the ministry, so your school's own notices come first. We will update this page when anything changes.
When does school start in 2027?
School starts on Monday 4 January 2027, for both groups. KPM fixed the date a year ahead, in its October 2025 circular on the 2026 calendar, saying one opening day for the whole country would keep schools in step and make their planning easier.[2] It has now done the same for 2028: every school opens on Monday 3 January 2028.[3]
Group A's school week normally runs from Sunday to Thursday. Because the 2027 school year starts on a Monday, Group A's first week has four school days.
Year 1 and Form 1 also start the new school curriculum, KP2027, that morning. Our KP2027 guide for teachers explains what changes in those classrooms.
Which group is your state in?
KPM sets one calendar for each group of states, because the two groups have different weekends.
| Group | States | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| Group A (Kumpulan A) | Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu | Friday and Saturday |
| Group B (Kumpulan B) | Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya | Saturday and Sunday |
Johor joined Group B on 1 January 2025, when the state moved its weekend back to Saturday and Sunday.[4] A few calendar sites still list it in Group A.
The 2027 school calendar, term by term
The year has two terms (penggal). Each term has a short break in the middle, the mid-year break sits between the two terms, and the year-end break follows the second.
| Group A | Group B | |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1 begins | Monday 4 January | Monday 4 January |
| Term 1 break (Cuti Penggal 1) | Friday 5 to Saturday 13 March (9 days) | Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 March (9 days) |
| Mid-year break (Cuti Pertengahan Tahun) | Friday 21 May to Saturday 5 June (16 days) | Saturday 22 May to Sunday 6 June (16 days) |
| Term 2 begins | Sunday 6 June | Monday 7 June |
| Term 2 break (Cuti Penggal 2) | Friday 27 August to Saturday 4 September (9 days) | Saturday 28 August to Sunday 5 September (9 days) |
| Last school day | Thursday 2 December | Friday 3 December |
| Year-end break (Cuti Akhir Persekolahan) | Friday 3 to Friday 31 December (29 days) | Saturday 4 to Friday 31 December (28 days) |
Term 2 officially begins on a public holiday in both groups. Awal Muharam falls on Sunday 6 June and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's official birthday on Monday 7 June, so the first day of lessons in Term 2 is Tuesday 8 June, unless that day becomes a replacement holiday in Group B (more on that below).

Months with no national break can still have a state holiday. The state table further down lists them.
KPM's extra festive holidays (cuti perayaan)
On top of the public holidays, KPM adds school holidays of its own around the main festivals. In 2027 there are eight of these days for Group A and ten for Group B (nine in Sarawak). The ministry said every school must observe them and that they do not need to be replaced with make-up days.
| Festival | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year (Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February) | Tuesday 9 to Thursday 11 February; Kelantan and Terengganu also Monday 8 February | Friday 5 February, and Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February |
| Hari Raya Puasa (Wednesday 10 March and Thursday 11 March) | Sunday 14 March | None; the festival falls in the break |
| Hari Raya Haji (Monday 17 May) | Sunday 16 May and Wednesday 19 May; Kedah also Tuesday 18 May | Tuesday 18 May and Wednesday 19 May |
| Wesak (Thursday 20 May) | None | Friday 21 May |
| Deepavali (Thursday 28 October; not a Sarawak holiday) | Wednesday 27 October | Wednesday 27 October and Friday 29 October; Sarawak Thursday 28 October only |
Three more festivals fall inside a break, so they get no extra days: Pesta Kaamatan (30 and 31 May, Sabah and Labuan) and Hari Gawai (1 and 2 June, Sarawak) during the mid-year break, and Christmas during the year-end break.
That is more than in 2026. The 2026 calendar gave extra days for Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali only: five for Group A and six for Group B.[5] The 2027 calendar adds Hari Raya Haji and Wesak. KPM can also add a day during the year, as it did on 10 March 2026, when it gave schools an extra Hari Raya holiday on 18 March.[6]
Public holidays in 2027 and where they fall
The Prime Minister's Department published the 2027 federal and state holiday list in August 2026.[7] Three dates on it are marked "subject to change": Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali.
| Public holiday | Date | For school |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Saturday 6 February and Sunday 7 February | Inside the February closure. Group B gets Monday 8 February as a replacement holiday. |
| Hari Raya Puasa | Wednesday 10 March and Thursday 11 March | Inside the Term 1 break |
| Labour Day | Saturday 1 May | A weekend day for both groups |
| Hari Raya Haji (Hari Raya Qurban) | Monday 17 May; also Tuesday 18 May in Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu | Inside the May closure |
| Wesak | Thursday 20 May | Inside the May closure |
| Awal Muharam | Sunday 6 June | The last day of Group B's mid-year break, and Group A's first day of Term 2, so no school |
| The Agong's official birthday | Monday 7 June | No school in either group |
| Maulidur Rasul | Sunday 15 August | No school in Group A; Group B gets Monday 16 August as a replacement holiday |
| Merdeka Day | Tuesday 31 August | Inside the Term 2 break |
| Hari Malaysia | Thursday 16 September | No school |
| Deepavali | Thursday 28 October (not Sarawak) | No school, plus KPM's extra days |
| Christmas | Saturday 25 December | Inside the year-end break |
Awal Ramadan is listed for Monday 8 February (a holiday in Johor and Kedah), so most of the school weeks between Chinese New Year and the March break fall in the fasting month.
State holidays on school days
These state holidays fall on a school day in 2027. The others land on weekends or in a break.

| Monday 1 February | Federal Territory Day | Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya |
| Wednesday 24 February | Nuzul Al-Quran | Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, Putrajaya, Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, Terengganu |
| Thursday 4 March | Anniversary of the Sultan of Terengganu's installation | Terengganu |

| Monday 26 April | Sultan of Terengganu's birthday | Terengganu |
| Sunday 20 June | Sultan of Kedah's birthday | Kedah |
| Wednesday 7 July | George Town World Heritage Day | Pulau Pinang |
| Thursday 22 July | Sarawak Independence Day | Sarawak |
| Friday 30 July | Sultan of Pahang's birthday | Pahang |
| Tuesday 24 August | Birthday of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Melaka | Melaka |
| Wednesday 29 September and Thursday 30 September | Sultan of Kelantan's birthday | Kelantan |
| Friday 5 November | Sultan of Perak's birthday | Perak |
In Johor, the Hol of Almarhum Sultan Iskandar falls on Sunday 11 July, so Monday 12 July is likely to become a replacement holiday there.
How the days off join up
KPM lists its term breaks and festive days separately, and the public holidays sit in a third document. Put together with the weekends, they make these stretches with no school:
| Stretch | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Friday 5 to Saturday 13 February (9 days) | Friday 5 to Sunday 14 February (10 days) |
| Term 1 break and Hari Raya Puasa | Friday 5 to Sunday 14 March (10 days) | Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 March (9 days) |
| Hari Raya Haji, Wesak and the mid-year break | Friday 14 May to Monday 7 June (25 days) | Saturday 15 May to Monday 7 June (24 days) |
| Term 2 break | Friday 27 August to Saturday 4 September (9 days) | Saturday 28 August to Sunday 5 September (9 days) |
| Deepavali | Wednesday 27 to Saturday 30 October (4 days) | Wednesday 27 to Sunday 31 October (5 days); Sarawak: Thursday 28 October only |
| Year end | Friday 3 December 2027 to Sunday 2 January 2028 (31 days) | Saturday 4 December 2027 to Sunday 2 January 2028 (30 days) |
Replacement holidays follow the Holidays Act 1951. In Peninsular states with a Saturday and Sunday weekend, a public holiday that falls on a Sunday moves to the next day that is not already a holiday.[8] KPM's own day counts include the replacements on Monday 8 February and Monday 16 August. By the same rule, Awal Muharam on Sunday 6 June would move to Tuesday 8 June in Group B, because Monday 7 June is already a holiday. KPM's count does not include that day yet, so wait for an official notice before you plan around it.
How many school days are there in 2027?
| Stretch | Group A | Group B |
|---|---|---|
| Term 1, before the March break | 39 days (Monday 4 January to Thursday 4 March) | 39 days (Monday 4 January to Friday 5 March) |
| Term 1, after the March break | 43 days (Sunday 14 March to Thursday 20 May) | 45 days (Monday 15 March to Friday 21 May) |
| Term 2, before the August break | 57 days (Sunday 6 June to Thursday 26 August) | 58 days (Monday 7 June to Friday 27 August) |
| Term 2, after the August break | 62 days (Sunday 5 September to Thursday 2 December) | 61 days (Monday 6 September to Friday 3 December) |
| Whole year | 201 days over 44 weeks | 203 days over 44 weeks |
KPM prints these counts for each stretch of its calendar. They already take out the national public holidays and KPM's festive days. They do not take out state holidays, so a school in a state with a holiday on a school day (Johor on 23 March, for example) has one day fewer. The 2026 calendar counted 204 days for Group A and 202 for Group B.
For teachers planning a scheme of work: Term 1 has 19 school weeks (9 before the March break and 10 after it) and Term 2 has 25 (12 and 13).
The rest of 2026: when does the year-end holiday start?
The 2026 school year ends on Thursday 3 December for Group A and Friday 4 December for Group B. The year-end break runs to Thursday 31 December, and with the weekend before 4 January, children are off until Sunday 3 January 2027: 31 days in Group A and 30 in Group B.
Before then, Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Group A has Monday 9 November off as a KPM festive day. Group B has Monday 9 November (the replacement holiday) and Tuesday 10 November, so both groups get four days in a row. Sarawak schools have Monday 9 November off.
For Form 5, the holiday starts later. SPM 2026 begins with the speaking tests on 26 October, the science practicals run from 16 to 18 November, and the written papers run from 23 November to 17 December. Our SPM 2026 timetable lists every paper.

Your child starts Year 1 and the new KP2027 curriculum on the same morning, possibly alongside classmates a year younger, because six-year-olds could enrol for the first time. Nine school weeks come before the first break, with only the Chinese New Year closure in between, so settle sleep and morning routines in December. In the long May break, keep up reading together so the habit does not lapse for a month.
A planning checklist for 2027
Private, international and religious schools
KPM's calendar covers government and government-aided schools. International and private schools set their own terms, though some follow the national dates, and schools run by state religious authorities may follow their state's calendar. If your child attends one of these, check with the school.
What could still change
- Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali are marked "subject to change" in the official list. Hari Raya Puasa stays inside the March break even if it moves by a day.
- Group B may get a replacement holiday on Tuesday 8 June for Awal Muharam. KPM's count does not include it yet.
- KPM can add festive days during the year, as it did in March 2026.
- The date for SPM 2026 results has not been announced. SPM 2025 results came out on 31 March 2026.[9]
We will update this page as each of these is confirmed.
