Why Pengajian Am counts for more than it looks
Pengajian Am is the subject almost every Form 6 student sits, because it is counted in the PNGK and public universities require it. The PNGK averages the four best subjects with Pengajian Am among them, so a weak grade here pulls down an otherwise strong result.
It is also easy to neglect, on the view that general knowledge cannot be revised. The papers reward structure, accurate facts about Malaysia's constitution and institutions, and a clear method for data questions, and all of that can be practised.
Alih bentuk komunikasi: data into words
Semesters 2 and 3 both test alih bentuk komunikasi, moving information between text and tables, graphs or charts. In Semester 3 the direction is from a table or graph into written analysis: name the trend, give the figures that support it, then explain or evaluate it the way the question asks.
Most lost marks come from answers that describe without numbers, or explain without going back to the data. Tutors teach a routine for each kind of figure and practise it until the student can write a full answer inside the time the paper allows.
The project, and what a tutor may do
The coursework project runs through Semester 2: the student picks one of two themes MPM sets, carries out the research and produces a report, then presents it in the first weeks of Semester 3. Together they make up just over a quarter of the grade, and neither can be retaken.
A tutor can explain research methods, how to frame a question and how to present findings, and can help the student rehearse the presentation. A tutor will not choose the topic, collect the data or write any part of the report: it is assessed as the student's own work.

- Name the trend first: the number of internet users rose between 2020 and 2024.
- Support it with the figures: an increase of 0.6 million, from 1.2 million to 1.8 million.
- Turn it into a rate: 0.6 ÷ 1.2 × 100% = 50%, so the number of users rose by half in four years.
- Explain with two factors, each tied to the data: wider broadband and mobile coverage brought more people online, and more learning, work and government services moved online, which gave people a reason to connect.
- Close with one sentence linking the figures to the explanation, written in Bahasa Melayu.

Frequently asked questions
Is Pengajian Am compulsory?
It is required for the PNGK and for applications to public universities, so almost every Form 6 student takes it alongside their other subjects.
Can Pengajian Am be learnt in English?
The papers are set in Bahasa Melayu, so tutors practise every answer in Malay. They can explain a topic in English first when that helps the student.
Do you help with the Pengajian Am project?
With the skills behind it, yes: research methods, framing a question, presenting data and rehearsing the presentation. A tutor does not choose the topic, collect data or write the report.
