A heavy reading load, examined in three parts
STPM Biology carries more content per semester than SPM Biology, and the explanations have to be exact. Semester 1 goes down to the molecular level: biological molecules, DNA and protein synthesis, enzymes, and the stages of respiration and photosynthesis with the enzymes involved. Semester 2 covers physiology from gas exchange to immunity and infectious diseases, and Semester 3 moves to biodiversity, ecology and genetics.
Tutors teach each topic alongside the college, then turn the notes into answers: structured questions practised against the points they need, and essays planned so that each paragraph carries one point an examiner can credit.
Where marks are lost
Many lost marks come from answers that are nearly right. "Enzymes are destroyed by heat" earns little where "the enzyme is denatured, its active site changes shape and the substrate no longer fits" earns the marks. Students practise the precise wording for each process in the syllabus.
Genetics in Semester 3 adds calculation: Mendelian ratios checked with a chi-square test, map distances from crossover data, and allele frequencies from the Hardy-Weinberg equations, as in the worked question below. These questions reward a fixed routine more than inspiration.
Practical work
Form 6 students in government schools and approved private schools complete 15 experiments across the three semesters, assessed by their teachers and worth 20 percent of the grade; private candidates sit a written practical paper instead. Tutors can explain the biology behind an experiment and how to present and interpret the results, but the practical work itself is done under the teacher's supervision.
A question, worked through
A Semester 3 population genetics question from topic 17. The key step is starting from the recessive phenotype, the only genotype that can be counted directly.
Question
In a population of 2500 people in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, 400 have a condition caused by a recessive allele, a. Calculate (a) the frequency of allele a, (b) the frequency of the dominant allele A, and (c) the number of people who are carriers.
- People with the condition are aa, so q² = 400 ÷ 2500 = 0.16.
- (a) q = √0.16 = 0.4.
- (b) p + q = 1, so p = 1 − 0.4 = 0.6.
- (c) Carriers are heterozygous, Aa, with frequency 2pq = 2 × 0.6 × 0.4 = 0.48.
- Number of carriers = 0.48 × 2500 = 1200 people. Check: p² + 2pq + q² = 0.36 + 0.48 + 0.16 = 1.

Frequently asked questions
Is STPM Biology taught in English or Bahasa Melayu?
Either. The papers are printed in both languages and answers may be written in either. Tutors teach the terms of the language the student will answer in, which matters in Biology, where a precise term often carries the mark.
My child did well in SPM Biology. Do they still need tuition?
Not always; some students manage with steady revision. Tuition helps when the volume of content or the essay questions start to cost marks, and a college test early in Semester 1 is a good early signal.
When should STPM Biology tuition start?
At the start of Semester 1, since its paper comes within months and a retake is only possible at the end of Semester 3. Students who start later work on the current semester first.
