STPM Maths T Tuition Online (Mathematics 954)

STPM Mathematics (T), now named Mathematics 954: algebra and geometry, calculus, then statistics, with one written paper each semester.

Afterkelas teaches STPM Mathematics (T) online to Form 6 students, following the Mathematics 954 syllabus across all three semesters. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, in English or Bahasa Melayu.

What STPM Mathematics (T) covers

The 18 topics of the current syllabus, numbered as MPM numbers them. Each semester is examined in its own paper, so the plan follows the same order.

Semester 1: Algebra and geometry

6 topics
  1. Functions and equations
  2. Sequences and series
  3. Matrices and systems of linear equations
  4. Complex numbers
  5. Analytic geometry
  6. Vectors and geometry

Semester 2: Calculus

6 topics
  1. Limits and continuity
  2. Differentiation
  3. Integration
  4. Differential equations
  5. Maclaurin series
  6. Numerical methods

Semester 3: Statistics

6 topics
  1. Probability
  2. Discrete probability distributions
  3. Continuous probability distributions
  4. Sampling distributions and estimation
  5. Hypothesis testing
  6. Correlation and regression

A paper at the end of every semester

Each semester of Mathematics (T) ends in its own 2-hour paper, so the subject runs as three short courses. Semester 1 arrives within months of SPM and moves from functions and inequalities to matrices, complex numbers and vectors in three dimensions. The step up from SPM Additional Mathematics shows here first: the paper asks for proofs by induction, row reduction of matrices and complete working as well as answers.

Tutors teach each topic alongside the college, then switch to past-year and specimen papers in the weeks before the semester exam. A Semester 1 or 2 paper can be retaken once, at the end of Semester 3, and the better score counts, but the retake lands in the same season as the Semester 3 paper. A good first attempt saves a crowded finish.

Where marks are lost

The papers reward complete working. A "show that" question needs every line, an answer must be in the form the question asks for, and a long calculus answer can lose most of its marks to one early algebra slip. Students practise setting out each step so that a slip costs one mark instead of five.

In Semester 3, hypothesis tests lose marks when the conclusion stops at a number. The final line has to say what the result means for the claim being tested, in the words of the question, and tutors make that sentence part of the routine. Correlation and regression, the last topic of the syllabus, reward the same habit: calculate, then interpret.

What changed in the current syllabus

MPM revised every STPM syllabus for the cohort sitting Semester 1 papers from November 2025. For this subject the official name became Mathematics (954), the coursework project was dropped, and the three papers now carry equal weight at 80 marks each.

Older revision books and past-year papers still cover most topics. Check them against the list above before relying on them: questions on chi-squared tests, for example, belong to the old Semester 3 and are no longer examined in this subject.

A question, worked through

A Semester 3 question on the binomial distribution, topic 14 of the syllabus. Stating the model first earns the method mark before any arithmetic.

Question

The random variable X has the distribution B(10, 0.3). Find (a) P(X = 2) and (b) P(X ≥ 1), giving each answer to 4 decimal places.

  1. State the model: P(X = r) = ¹⁰Cᵣ (0.3)ʳ (0.7)¹⁰⁻ʳ, for r = 0, 1, …, 10.
  2. (a) P(X = 2) = ¹⁰C₂ × 0.3² × 0.7⁸ = 45 × 0.09 × 0.057648 = 0.2335.
  3. (b) Use the complement, which needs one term instead of ten: P(X ≥ 1) = 1 − P(X = 0).
  4. P(X = 0) = 0.7¹⁰ = 0.028248, so P(X ≥ 1) = 1 − 0.028248 = 0.9718.

Answer (a) 0.2335. (b) 0.9718.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mathematics (T) the same as STPM Mathematics 954?

Yes. MPM's current syllabus calls the subject Mathematics, code 954, and calls Mathematics (M) Management Mathematics, code 950. Schools and students still use the old names, so this page uses both.

Should my child take Mathematics (T) or Mathematics (M)?

Mathematics (T) suits students heading for science, engineering, computing or mathematics degrees, with more pure mathematics and calculus. Mathematics (M) suits those heading for business, economics, accounting or finance, with financial and decision mathematics in place of complex numbers, vectors and the later calculus topics.

When should Mathematics (T) tuition start?

At the start of Semester 1, because its paper comes within months and a retake is only possible at the end of Semester 3. Students who start later work on the current semester first and repair any gap the next paper depends on.

How much does STPM Mathematics (T) tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the current semester, the college and any semester results so far on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
