SPM 2026 ends on 17 December 2026, and most candidates then take one of five routes towards a degree: Form Six for STPM, Matriculation, a public university's Asasi year, a foundation or A Level at a private college, or a diploma. Form Six, Matriculation and Asasi cost little or nothing and lead mainly to Malaysian public universities, while the private routes charge tens of thousands of ringgit and reach further, including abroad.[1]
Below, the routes are compared on cost, length, intakes, entry grades, assessment and recognition, with last cycle's application dates (this cycle's are not out yet) and a plan for the months before results. If SPM has not started, the next weeks belong to our SPM 2026 revision plan; this page can wait until the weekend.
What are the options after SPM in Malaysia?
Every route below leads towards a bachelor's degree, directly or through a diploma. They differ in who runs them, what they cost and which universities read the result.
Form Six (STPM)
Form Six runs at government schools and Form Six colleges for three semesters, about a year and a half, and ends with the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), set by Majlis Peperiksaan Malaysia. Each semester ends with a central exam, and weak Semester 1 and 2 papers can be resat. You need an SPM pass with a credit in Bahasa Melayu, plus at least three credits within a grade-point limit set for each field (STEM or social science), and you must be 17 to 20 on 1 January of the year you enter. The Ministry of Education makes Form Six offers from SPM results, and candidates at government schools pay no STPM exam fees.[2]
Form Six is open to every Malaysian who meets its grades, and the government treats STPM as equivalent to A Level. In January 2026 the government announced that Form Six and Matriculation would move to the Ministry of Higher Education from 2027; on 28 July 2026 the Prime Minister kept Form Six under the Ministry of Education for now.[3] Watch the official notices for where the next Matriculation intake is handled.
Matriculation (KPM)
The Ministry of Education's Matriculation Programme runs at 15 matriculation colleges and two MARA colleges. Most students take the one-year, two-semester programme; the science stream also has a two-year option. There are five streams: science, computer science, engineering, accounting and professional accounting.[4]
The government pays tuition and hostel. Students pay a registration fee (RM499 for science, RM446 for accounting) and RM150 for MUET, and eligible students receive a living allowance of RM1,250 a semester. Selection goes by merit, 90 percent academic and 10 percent co-curricular, together with family income. For the one-year science stream, KPM's latest published minimum was a B in Mathematics, a C in Bahasa Melayu, English, Additional Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Biology, and a pass in Sejarah. The accounting stream does not ask for Additional Mathematics.[5]
Ninety percent of places are reserved for Bumiputera students. For the 2026/2027 intake, every SPM 2025 candidate with 10A or better (A-, A and A+ only) who applied received an automatic offer, 6,717 students in all.[6]
Asasi at a public university
Public universities run their own one-year foundation programmes (Asasi), filled through UPU Definition The central admissions system for public universities, polytechnics and community colleges, run by the Ministry of Higher Education at upu.mohe.gov.my. for the June and July intake only. The general rule is five SPM credits including Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah, and each programme adds subject grades of its own. Some Asasi programmes are reserved for Bumiputera candidates, including Asasi Sains at Universiti Malaya and every UiTM programme; others, such as ASASIpintar at UKM and Asasi Sains at UMK, are open to all qualified applicants.[7]
Fees are low. Universiti Malaya's foundation centre lists RM1,700 to RM1,800 for its UPU-channel Asasi year, hostel not included, and points students from low-income households to financial help from the Ministry of Higher Education.[8] An Asasi year leads mainly to the same university's degrees.
A Level: what it is in Malaysia
A Level is a British-style pre-university qualification. Colleges in Malaysia teach it to one of two boards: Cambridge International AS & A Level, examined here in the June and November series, or Pearson Edexcel International A Level, built from units sat in the January, June and October series. Students take three or four subjects, can sit the AS papers after the first year and the rest later, and receive grades from A* to E.[9]
Courses run 15 to 21 months: Sunway College offers 18 or 21 months, with January, July and September intakes and an April headstart, and Taylor's College starts in February, April and August.[10] For three subjects, tuition ran from RM24,300 at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (January and July intakes, before resource, registration and other fees) to RM35,453 at Taylor's, or RM47,054 for four subjects in its 15-month August 2026 intake. Taylor's puts exam fees at about RM2,280 to RM3,640 for AS and RM2,280 to RM3,040 for A2.[11]
Universities in Malaysia and abroad accept A Level, and several scholarships below place SPM scholars in it. Public universities admit A Level students through UPU (category F1, September or October intake) if they also hold an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu, a pass in Sejarah, and MUET or an accepted English test such as IELTS.[12] Our A Level tuition page explains how the two boards set their papers.
Foundation at a private university
Private universities and colleges run foundation programmes of their own, accredited by MQA: 50 credits taken within one year, in two or three semesters.[13] The colleges we checked ask for five SPM credits. INTI's Foundation in Science, which its colleges start in January, April and August, costs RM21,229 to RM23,218, and Taylor's foundation programmes cost RM28,600 to RM31,600 for the August 2026 intake.[14] A private foundation is the shortest paid route, but it is built for the university that runs it and its partners. UPU also lists private foundation, category F8, for public university degrees.
Diploma
A diploma takes two and a half to three years at a public university, polytechnic, community college or private college, and asks for fewer credits: three SPM credits with passes in Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah. It qualifies you for work on its own, and some degrees accept diploma credits so that graduates finish sooner.[15]
Other pre-university programmes
Some colleges and international schools also offer the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT), the South Australian Matriculation (SAM, the SACE), the Canadian Pre-University or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. UPU accepts them under categories F2 and F7, with the same SPM conditions as A Level. Taylor's lists RM35,795 for AUSMAT in its August 2026 intake, plus about RM9,080 in exam fees.

Which route suits you?
Two questions narrow the choice fastest: where you want to take your degree, and who pays for the year or two before it.
Two questions that narrow the choice
Across: where you want the degree, at a Malaysian public university or a private or overseas one. Down: whether the route is free or paid for by the family.
Public university · low cost
Matriculation, Form Six or Asasi
Matriculation if you win a place (one year), Form Six, open to every Malaysian who meets its grades (a year and a half), or a public Asasi. Graduates of all three apply for degrees through UPU.
Private or overseas · low cost
A scholarship, or STPM
A scholarship that pays for A Level or AUSMAT, or STPM, which the government treats as equal to A Level. Check each overseas university's STPM entry rules.
Public university · family-funded
Possible, but at a price
A Level and private foundation students can apply through UPU (categories F1 and F8) with an SPM credit in BM and a Sejarah pass, yet the free routes reach the same universities.
Private or overseas · family-funded
Private foundation or A Level
A foundation if you have chosen the university, since it is shorter and cheaper. A Level if you want to keep universities and countries open.
Still unsure where the degree will be? Choose a route that keeps both kinds of university open, STPM if cost matters or A Level if it does not, and apply for Matriculation anyway. The government treats STPM and A Level as equivalent. They differ in cost and in how they examine you, and there is no official measure of which is harder.
When do applications open after SPM 2026?
Only SPM itself is fixed for this cycle. The written papers run from 23 November to 17 December 2026, as our SPM 2026 timetable shows, and the SPM 2026 results date has not been announced. Last year the Ministry of Education announced on 9 March that SPM 2025 results would come out on 31 March 2026, at schools from 10:00 am and online at myresultspm.moe.gov.my.[16]
UPU and KPM have not announced the 2027 application dates either, so the table shows last cycle's dates, for SPM 2025 candidates, to give you the order and the gaps.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 10 November 2025 to 10 February 2026 | Matriculation applications, phase 1 |
| 29 January to 12 April 2026 | UPU applications for Asasi, diploma and other SPM-leaver programmes (extended from 23 March) |
| 31 March 2026 | SPM 2025 results; Matriculation phase 2 opened the same day and closed on 4 April |
| 24 April 2026 | Form Six offers on sst6.moe.gov.my, with appeals until 8 May |
| 27 April 2026 | Matriculation offers, with appeals until 6 June |
| Second week of May 2026 | UPU offers for Asasi and diploma places |
| 7 to 12 June 2026 | Matriculation registration; Form Six registration on 8 June; UPU registration from 8 June |
Matriculation's first phase and the UPU window both opened well before results, so students applied on expected grades and updated later: UPU stayed open until 12 April, after the Ministry of Higher Education extended it once the results date was set,[17] and KPM's five-day second phase let applicants add their results.[18] The government routes then all began in June, with Form Six registering on 8 June 2026 and the matriculation colleges from 7 to 12 June.[19] Private colleges take students several times a year, so you can start an A Level or foundation in April, or wait for the government offers and join a later intake.
Scholarships after SPM: who pays for which programme
The big scholarships for SPM leavers read your real grades, so they open around results day: in 2026 PETRONAS took applications from 31 March, the day SPM 2025 results came out, to 10 April.[20] Most pay for the pre-university years as part of a package that runs to the end of a degree.
| Scholarship | What it pays for before the degree | SPM grades asked for |
|---|---|---|
| JPA National Sponsorship Programme (PPN) | A preparatory programme at a college JPA names each year, then a degree at a top-20 university in the QS rankings, or a top-10 one in the subject | 9A+ for engineering and science, 8A+ for other fields, in listed subjects; at least A- in the rest |
| JPA LSPM | A preparatory programme, then a degree at a Malaysian university | 9A+ |
| PETRONAS (overseas track) | A Level, AUSMAT, or preparation for Japan, China or Korea, at colleges such as Kolej Yayasan UEM, Taylor's, Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar and INTEC | At least 4 A+ and 4 A with subject conditions, and CEFR C1 |
| Khazanah Global | A Level at Kolej Yayasan UEM | 8 As (A or A+), including BM, English, Sejarah and Mathematics; or 8 As in IGCSE |
| Bank Negara Kijang (pre-university) | Pre-university programmes at colleges Bank Negara approves | 8 As (A+ and A only) and a CEFR result |
The table draws on each provider's own pages.[21] Only Khazanah also accepts IGCSE results. Private colleges run scholarships too, some decided before results: Sunway College's Special Scholarship 2027 accepts SPM 2026 candidates' trial results. For a diploma, JPA's Dermasiswa B40 pays for study at public universities, polytechnics, MARA's TVET institutions and selected public training institutes, for SPM leavers from households earning RM5,249 or less a month; its 2026 window ran from 3 to 16 August.[22]
What to do while waiting for SPM results
- Shortlist two routes
- Apply for the free routes
- Price the private options
- Update your choices on results day
Decide before results day
Treat your trial (percubaan) results as a working estimate. If they make Matriculation or a public Asasi realistic, apply when the windows open; if they point to Form Six, ask the Form Six schools near you which subject packages they offer. Apply for the free routes even if you lean towards a private college: Matriculation applications are free, and a UPU PIN costs RM10.60.
Choosing subjects for STPM or A Level
Work backwards from two or three degree courses you might take, and check their subject rules on UPU's e-Panduan (online.mohe.gov.my/epanduan) or on each university's own pages. To apply to a public university, an STPM student needs a PNGK of at least 2.00 with a grade C in three subjects, Pengajian Am among them.[23] A Level students choose three or four subjects, and a fourth adds both work and cost: RM47,054 against RM35,453 at Taylor's. In Matriculation the college sets your science aliran from your SPM results, and the aliran shapes your degree options: KPM's list includes medicine, dentistry and pharmacy for Sains Hayat, and engineering and information technology for Sains Fizikal. Our STPM and Matriculation tuition pages list the subjects each route teaches.
Budgeting for pre-university
Budget for the whole route from the start. Private fee schedules quote tuition; exam fees, science subject fees (RM350 per science subject each semester at Taylor's), hostel and living costs come on top. The free routes carry small costs too, such as Matriculation's registration fee and MUET, and hostel fees at a public Asasi.
Using the months between SPM and results
If results come at the end of March again, as SPM 2025's did, you have about three months from 18 December 2026. Keep the documents the applications ask for in one folder, including your co-curricular record, which UPU and Matriculation both count in merit. Visit two or three colleges if a private route is on your list. Heading for Matriculation, Asasi or A Level? Keep Additional Mathematics and the sciences warm for an hour or two a week: the 2026/2027 Matriculation calendar puts the first PSPM on 29 October 2026, less than five months after registration week.
Frequently asked questions
What can I do after SPM in Malaysia?
Most SPM leavers take one of five routes towards a degree: Form Six (STPM), Matriculation, a public university Asasi, a private foundation or A Level, or a diploma. The first three are free or low cost and lead mainly to public universities; private foundation and A Level charge fees and also lead to private and overseas universities.
What is A Level in Malaysia?
A British-style pre-university qualification taught at private colleges, following Cambridge International AS & A Level or Pearson Edexcel International A Level. Students take three or four subjects over 15 to 21 months and are graded A* to E. Public universities admit A Level holders who also have an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah.
Is STPM the same as A Level?
The government treats STPM as equivalent to A Level. STPM is free at government schools, runs for three semesters with a central exam after each, and includes coursework. A Level is taught at private colleges for a fee, with exams set by Cambridge or Pearson.
What is the difference between Matriculation and Asasi?
Both take a year. Matriculation is run by the Ministry of Education, its tuition and hostel are free, and its graduates apply to any public university through UPU. Asasi is run by a university, charges a small fee (RM1,700 to RM1,800 at Universiti Malaya) and leads mainly to that university's own degrees.
When will SPM 2026 results be released?
The date has not been announced. Last year the Ministry of Education announced on 9 March 2026 that SPM 2025 results would be released on 31 March 2026, from 10:00 am at schools and online at myresultspm.moe.gov.my.
When do Matriculation 2027/2028 applications open?
KPM has not announced the dates. For the 2026/2027 intake, phase 1 ran from 10 November 2025 to 10 February 2026 and phase 2 from 31 March to 4 April 2026; offers came on 27 April and registration began on 7 June 2026. Applying is free, at matrikulasi.moe.gov.my.
Can I apply before I get my SPM results?
For some routes, yes. Last cycle, Matriculation phase 1 and the UPU window for SPM leavers both opened before SPM 2025 results, and applicants updated their details later. Some private colleges also award scholarships on trial results, such as Sunway College's Special Scholarship 2027.
How much does A Level cost in Malaysia?
At the colleges we checked, three subjects cost from RM24,300 in tuition at Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (before other fees) to RM35,453 at Taylor's College, and four subjects at Taylor's cost RM47,054 (August 2026 intake). Taylor's estimates exam fees at RM2,280 to RM3,640 for AS and RM2,280 to RM3,040 for A2.
Can A Level students apply to public universities?
Yes. UPU accepts A Level under category F1 for the September or October intake. Applicants also need an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu, a pass in Sejarah, and MUET or an accepted alternative such as IELTS or TOEFL.
Which scholarships pay for A Level after SPM?
Khazanah pays for A Level at Kolej Yayasan UEM, and PETRONAS's overseas track places scholars in A Level or AUSMAT at colleges such as Kolej Yayasan UEM and Taylor's. JPA and Bank Negara also fund pre-university study. All ask for at least 8 As in SPM; in 2026 PETRONAS took applications from 31 March to 10 April.
