As of 7 October 2026, the Ministry of Education (KPM) has not announced when applications for the Matriculation 2027/2028 intake open, and the official portal, matrikulasi.moe.gov.my, still carries last session's notices. Last year, SPM 2025 candidates could apply from Monday 10 November 2025 to Tuesday 10 February 2026, before they had their results.[1]
That round filled the 2026/2027 session. This guide sets out what is known about the next one: last year's timeline, the SPM grades each stream asked for, how the application and appeals work, and what the planned move to the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) does and does not change for applicants.
Afterkelas is an online tuition school, not part of KPM or KPT, so the ministry's own announcements always come first. We will update this page when the 2027/2028 round opens.
Has the Matriculation 2027/2028 application opened?
Not as of 7 October 2026. KPM announces each round on the portal and on its official social media accounts, and neither had anything on 2027/2028. Each of the last three rounds opened for that year's SPM candidates, months before their results.[2]
| Session | Who applied | Phase 1 applications |
|---|---|---|
| 2024/2025 | SPM 2023 candidates | Friday 15 December 2023 to Sunday 31 March 2024 |
| 2025/2026 | SPM 2024 candidates | Sunday 1 December 2024 to Friday 28 February 2025 |
| 2026/2027 | SPM 2025 candidates | Monday 10 November 2025 to Tuesday 10 February 2026 |
| 2027/2028 | SPM 2026 candidates | Not announced as of 7 October 2026 |
The last round opened about two weeks before the SPM 2025 written papers began on 25 November 2025. The SPM 2026 written papers run from 23 November to 17 December 2026 (our SPM 2026 timetable lists every paper), so check the portal during the exam season too. Until KPM publishes the 2027/2028 dates, any date you see elsewhere is a guess.
Matriculation 2026/2027: last year's dates and deadlines
These dates belong to the 2026/2027 session, for SPM 2025 candidates. They show the order of events and roughly how far apart they fell, which is the best guide available until KPM publishes the new round.[3]
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Phase 1 applications | Monday 10 November 2025 to Tuesday 10 February 2026 |
| SPM 2025 results | Tuesday 31 March 2026 |
| Phase 2: new applications and updates | Tuesday 31 March to Saturday 4 April 2026 |
| First offers on the portal | Monday 27 April 2026 |
| Offers to 286 students whose results rose to 10A after a re-check, by SMS | Wednesday 29 April 2026 |
| Registration week at the colleges | From Sunday 7 June 2026 (colleges in Kedah and Kelantan) or Monday 8 June 2026 (all other colleges) |
| Second intake: appeal results | Wednesday 10 June 2026; accept by 13 June; report on 14 June (Kedah and Kelantan) or 15 June (other states) |
| Third intake: appeal results | Monday 22 June 2026; report on 28 or 29 June 2026 |
| Semester I exams | 29 October to 6 November 2026 |
| Semester II exams, end of the session | 19 to 26 April 2027 |
The first offers went up on 27 April 2026, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said in May. Offers for students whose SPM results rose to 10A after a re-check came later: the 286 students in this group were told by SMS on 29 April and could accept from 6 May.[4]
Two windows are worth planning around. Phase 2 opens on SPM results day and lasts five days. Offers then follow within 21 working days, a target KPM's Matriculation Division sets in its client charter; in 2026 they came 27 days after the results, counting weekends.[5] The SPM 2026 results date has not been announced, so neither window can be worked out yet.
Is matriculation moving to the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT)?
The government has announced that it will, but it has not set a date or said what changes for applicants. On 20 January 2026, launching the National Education Plan 2026-2035, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said KPT would take over Form Six and matriculation, so that their students count as higher-education students instead of school pupils. Reports of the speech differ on whether he said this year or next year; KPT's own account of the launch says next year, that is 2027.[6]
| Date | What was said or decided |
|---|---|
| 19 December 2025 | KPM and KPT set up a joint steering committee to work through the legal, welfare, financial, staffing, systems and asset questions of moving Form Six and matriculation. |
| 20 January 2026 | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, launching the National Education Plan 2026-2035, announces that KPT will take over Form Six and matriculation. |
| 25 February 2026 | Higher Education Minister Zambry Abd Kadir tells the Dewan Rakyat that curriculum planning, assessment, admissions management and quality monitoring for matriculation will come under KPT. |
| 27 April 2026 | Zambry says KPT is finalising the legal and administrative framework for the transfer. |
| 28 July 2026 | The Prime Minister decides that Form Six stays under KPM for now. Reports of the decision mentioned no change to the plan for matriculation. |
Zambry described the joint committee in February, as RTM reported[7], and told the Dewan Rakyat that the move was expected to cut overlapping work between the two ministries without affecting student welfare or the quality of teaching and learning[8]. His April update was reported by the New Straits Times[9], and the Prime Minister's July decision, which keeps Form Six with KPM "for now", by Malay Mail[10].
What the move changes for SPM 2026 candidates so far
Nothing official yet. The 2026/2027 intake was run from start to finish by KPM's Matriculation Division (Bahagian Matrikulasi), which also publishes the academic calendar and the PSPM results and runs the application portal. As of 7 October 2026, none of these had been announced:
- the date KPT takes over matriculation;
- whether the 2027/2028 round will still run on matrikulasi.moe.gov.my, and which ministry will issue the offers;
- any change to the streams, the minimum grades, the 90:10 quota or the 10A offer.
Matriculation streams, programmes and colleges
The KPM Matriculation Programme runs at 15 matriculation colleges and two MARA colleges, in five streams. Every stream runs as a one-year, two-semester programme (Sistem Dua Semester). Only Science also runs a two-year, four-semester version (Sistem Empat Semester), which KPM lists for Bumiputera applicants only.[11]
| Stream | Length | Core subjects | Colleges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Science (Sains) | One year; also a two-year version | Mathematics and Chemistry, plus two of Physics, Biology and Computer Science, depending on the aliran (Sains Hayat, Sains Fizikal or Sains Teknologi) | KM Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Perlis, Labuan, Johor, Perak, Kedah, Pahang, Selangor, Kelantan and Sarawak, and Kolej MARA Kulim |
| Computer Science (Sains Komputer) | One year | Mathematics, Computer Programming, Database, Digital Technology | KM Labuan, Johor, Perak, Kelantan, Kedah and Negeri Sembilan |
| Engineering (Kejuruteraan) | One year | Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and one engineering subject: basic, civil, mechanical, or electrical and electronic | KM Kejuruteraan Kedah, Pahang and Johor |
| Accounting (Perakaunan) | One year | Mathematics, Accounting, Ekonomi, Pengurusan Perniagaan | KM Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Perlis, Labuan, Johor, Perak, Kedah, Pahang, Selangor and Kelantan, and Kolej MARA Kuala Nerang |
| Professional Accounting (Perakaunan Profesional) | One year, then UiTM on the ACCA route | Mathematics, Business and Technology, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting | KM Selangor |
The college lists come from KPM's frequently asked questions of May 2025, which also say that your college decides your Science aliran from your SPM results, and that Engineering students from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan are placed at KM Kejuruteraan Johor.[12] Mathematics, the sciences, Computer Science and Accounting are taught and examined in English; Ekonomi and Pengurusan Perniagaan are taught in Bahasa Melayu.
A new college is on the way: the Prime Minister broke ground for Kolej Matrikulasi Terengganu at Bukit Payong, Marang, on 13 April 2026.[13]
Matriculation entry requirements: minimum SPM grades
Three general conditions apply to every applicant: you must be a Malaysian citizen, no older than 20 when you apply, and a current-year SPM candidate, which for the 2027/2028 intake means SPM 2026. Each stream then sets minimum grades. These are the ones KPM published for the 2026/2027 intake; the 2027/2028 brochure has not been released.[14]
| Stream | Minimum SPM grades |
|---|---|
| Science, one year | Bahasa Melayu C, English C, Mathematics B, Additional Mathematics C, Chemistry C, Physics or Biology C, Sejarah pass |
| Science, two years (Bumiputera only) | Bahasa Melayu C, English C, Mathematics C, Additional Mathematics pass, Chemistry pass, Physics, Biology or Computer Science pass, Sejarah pass |
| Computer Science | Bahasa Melayu C, English C, Mathematics C, Additional Mathematics C, Computer Science C, Sejarah pass, and C in one more subject from KPM's list (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science and others) |
| Engineering | Bahasa Melayu C, English C, Mathematics B, Additional Mathematics C, Physics C, Chemistry pass, Sejarah pass, and C in one more subject from KPM's list |
| Accounting | Bahasa Melayu C, English C, Mathematics C, Sejarah pass, and C in three more subjects from KPM's list. Additional Mathematics is not required |
| Professional Accounting (Bumiputera only) | Bahasa Melayu C, English A-, Mathematics A, Additional Mathematics C, Sejarah pass, A in three more subjects from KPM's list, and a pass in an aptitude test and an interview |
Students who have memorised at least 10 juzuk of the Quran and hold a recognised tahfiz certificate can also take Hifz Al-Quran alongside the Science or Accounting stream, at KM Kelantan or KM Negeri Sembilan.
How matriculation selection works: merit and the 10A offer
Selection is on merit. The brochure weights it 90 per cent on SPM results and 10 per cent on co-curricular marks, and also lists the family income category, a 90:10 split between Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera places, and a maximum capacity of 30,000 students for the merit route.
The academic part uses only the four SPM subjects marked for merit in your stream. Each grade earns points (A+ 25, A 24, A- 23, B+ 22, B 21, C+ 20, C 19, D 18, E 17), and the total out of 100 is scaled to 90. In Science the four are Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Biology. KPM's own example shows why they matter more than your count of As:
| Student X (4A 4B) | Student Y (8A) | |
|---|---|---|
| The four merit subjects | A+, A+, A+, A+ (100 points) | A+, A-, A-, A (95 points) |
| Academic mark, out of 90 | 90.00 | 85.50 |
| Co-curricular mark, out of 10 | 7.56 | 7.56 |
| Total merit | 97.56 | 93.06 |
Student X has fewer As overall but ranks higher, because only the four merit subjects count towards the academic mark. In Computer Science they are Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Computer Science and one subject from KPM's list; in Engineering, Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and one listed subject; and in Accounting, Mathematics and three listed subjects. The portal has a merit calculator for each stream. With weeks left before SPM, our SPM 2026 revision plan shows how to spend them on the topics that lose you the most marks.
The 10A automatic offer
For the 2026/2027 intake, every applicant with at least 10 As (A-, A or A+) in that year's SPM was offered a place automatically, regardless of race or background, provided the 10 As included the four merit subjects of the chosen stream and the general and stream requirements were met. You still had to apply. Candidates who sat fewer than 10 subjects were not offered a place automatically, but could still get one on merit if places remained. On 8 April 2026 KPM said all 6,717 SPM 2025 candidates with 10A or more who applied would get a place, and that the 90 per cent Bumiputera quota stays.[15]
How to apply for matriculation, step by step
- Apply in Phase 1, before SPM results
- Apply or update in Phase 2, from results day
- Check for an offer on the portal
- Accept, pay the fee, register online
- Report to your college
In Phase 1, apply on the matriculation portal while you are still an SPM candidate and list your stream choices. The application is free, and KPM says you do not need to upload trial results. The portal asks you to use the latest Microsoft Edge or Firefox and allows one login session at a time.
Phase 2 opens on SPM results day for five days, for new applications and for updating an existing one. KPM then posts offers on the portal, and you may hold offers from other institutions at the same time, so applying here does not stop you applying through UPU.
To accept an offer, click setuju terima (accept) on the portal, download the offer letter and registration documents, and pay the registration fee at a BSN counter, through myBSN or by Interbank GIRO to your college's account. Then register online on your college's website; in 2026 online registration opened on 13 May. You need a passport-size photo, the fee payment reference, an active bank account in your own name at the bank assigned to your college (BSN, Bank Rakyat, Bank Islam or CIMB in 2026/2027) and your mobile number.[16]
On registration day, bring the documents on your college's checklist; tahfiz students taking Hifz Al-Quran also bring a copy of their tahfiz certificate. Every student lives in the college hostel. Questions about an application go to the Matriculation Division at mohon.matrik@moe.gov.my or 03-8884 4083.
How to check your matriculation result and appeal (rayuan)
You check the result on the same portal. If there is no offer, you can appeal, online only, through the portal once the offers are out, and the outcome depends on how many places are left. In 2025 the appeal window ran for a month, from 21 May to 21 June. In 2026, successful appeals were announced in two more rounds, a second intake on 10 June and a third on 22 June, each with its own date to report to college.
The portal also takes two other requests. You can ask to change stream during a short window after the offers (22 to 24 May in 2025), except from Science to Accounting, which your college handles after you register. Changing college is allowed only for a chronic illness that needs regular treatment, for siblings placed at different colleges, or when a parent moves between the Peninsula and Sabah or Sarawak. If your SPM grade changes after a re-check, keep your application open: in 2026 KPM sent offers to 286 students whose results rose to 10A after a re-check.
Matriculation fees and allowance (yuran and elaun)
KPM pays for tuition and the hostel. Families pay a registration fee that covers the whole programme, plus the MUET fee set by the Malaysian Examinations Council, which students may pay after their first allowance payment. These were the fees for 2026/2027:
| Stream | Registration fee for the whole programme |
|---|---|
| Science, Engineering, Computer Science | RM499 |
| Accounting, Professional Accounting | RM446 |
| Science, two-year version | RM499 for Semesters I and II, then RM334 before the second year |
Students from households earning RM10,000 or less are eligible for the Student Living Allowance (Bantuan Sara Hidup Pelajar, BSHP) of RM250 a month for 10 months. Professional Accounting students also buy RM600 of reference books and pay their own ACCA exam fees. KPM's FAQ adds two rules: students from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan placed in the Peninsula can claim one return flight a year, and a student who leaves without the government's approval must repay the allowance received.
Matriculation vs STPM vs Asasi
Many SPM 2026 candidates weighing matriculation also look at Form Six (STPM) and a public university's Asasi. This table compares the three on the points families ask about most:
| Matriculation | STPM (Form Six) | Asasi (public university) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | One year (two semesters); Science also runs a two-year version | One and a half years (three semesters) | One year (two semesters) |
| SPM entry | The stream minimums above, ranked on four merit subjects | A credit in Bahasa Melayu, plus three credits in the subjects set for the field | Five credits including Bahasa Melayu, and a pass in Sejarah |
| Cost to you | Tuition and hostel free; RM446 to RM499 registration fee; RM250 a month if eligible | Taught in government schools; STPM exam fees free for four or five subjects for candidates at government and government-aided schools | Fees set by each university |
| How you apply | KPM's matriculation portal: Phase 1 before SPM results, Phase 2 from results day | A Form Six offer from KPM after SPM results | UPU, as an SPM leaver (29 January to 23 March in 2026) |
| Route to a public university degree | UPU, STPM and equivalent category: PNGK of at least 2.00 and MUET Band 1.0 | UPU, same category: PNGK of at least 2.00 with C in three subjects including Pengajian Am, and MUET Band 1.0 | Built as a route into the same university's degrees; graduates of several Asasi programmes also apply through UPU's STPM and equivalent category |
The STPM column comes from KPM's Form Six pages[17] and the Asasi length from the government's MyGovernment portal.[18] Whichever you choose, degree places at public universities for the September and October intake go through UPU, which also asks all three groups for an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah. In 2026 the first UPU phase for these students ran from 29 January to 23 March, midway through the matriculation year. The update phase, when applicants could revise their choices using their actual final-semester results, opened in the third week of July, and new students registered at university from 17 September.[19]

What SPM 2026 candidates can do while they wait
- Put your effort where the merit is. For Science that means Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Biology.
- Make sure your co-curricular record is complete. The 10 per cent co-curricular mark reaches KPM from its own co-curriculum division, so if you are unsure, ask your school now.
- Keep other doors open. UPU applications for Asasi and diplomas opened on 29 January in 2026, and you can hold more than one offer.
- Work on your English. Most core courses are taught and examined in English, and UPU asks for at least MUET Band 1.0 when you apply for your degree.
- Have a bank account in your own name ready, since colleges pay the allowance into it.
- Follow the portal and KPM's official accounts, and treat dates on other sites as unconfirmed until KPM publishes them.
Frequently asked questions
When will Matriculation 2027/2028 applications open?
KPM had not announced the dates as of 7 October 2026. The last three rounds opened on 15 December 2023, 1 December 2024 and 10 November 2025, each for that year's SPM candidates. Watch matrikulasi.moe.gov.my and KPM's official accounts.
When did the 2026/2027 matriculation application close?
Phase 1 closed on 10 February 2026. Phase 2, for new applications and updates after the SPM 2025 results, ran from 31 March to 4 April 2026.
Do I need my SPM results to apply for matriculation?
No. Phase 1 is for current SPM candidates before the results are out, and KPM says you do not need to upload trial results. Phase 2 opens on SPM results day for five days so you can apply late or update your application.
Is the matriculation application free?
Yes. KPM states that applying to the Matriculation Programme is free, and it is done online at matrikulasi.moe.gov.my.
What SPM grades do I need for matriculation Science?
For the one-year Science stream in the 2026/2027 intake: B in Mathematics; C in Additional Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics or Biology; C in Bahasa Melayu and English; and a pass in Sejarah. The two-year version, for Bumiputera applicants only, asks for C in Mathematics, Bahasa Melayu and English, and passes in the other subjects.
Do all 10A students get a matriculation place?
In the 2026/2027 intake, yes, if they applied. KPM offered places to all 6,717 SPM 2025 candidates with 10A or more who applied. The 10 As had to include the four merit subjects of the chosen stream, and the stream's minimum requirements still applied.
Is matriculation moving to KPT?
The government announced in January 2026 that the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) will take over matriculation, and in April 2026 KPT said it was finalising the legal and administrative framework. As of 7 October 2026 no handover date had been announced and the programme was still run by KPM. Form Six stays with KPM for now.
How do I check my matriculation offer?
On the matriculation portal. KPM releases offers within 21 working days of the SPM results. In 2026 the first offers appeared on 27 April, 27 days after the SPM 2025 results.
Can I appeal if I do not get a matriculation offer?
Yes. Appeals are made online through the portal after the offers come out, and the outcome depends on places left. In 2026, successful appeals were announced in a second intake on 10 June and a third on 22 June.
How much does matriculation cost?
KPM pays for tuition and the hostel. In 2026/2027 the registration fee was RM499 for Science, Engineering and Computer Science and RM446 for the two accounting streams, with the MUET fee paid separately. Students from households earning RM10,000 or less are eligible for RM250 a month for 10 months.
