Fluid Mechanics Tuition Online for Engineering Students

Fluid Mechanics for degree and diploma students: fluid statics, continuity, Bernoulli and momentum, dimensional analysis, pipe flow and losses, taught from your course outline.

Afterkelas tutors Fluid Mechanics online for university and diploma students in civil, mechanical, chemical and other engineering programmes. Tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, following the student's own course.

What a first Fluid Mechanics course covers

The core topics of a first university course in fluid mechanics. Each university sets its own order and depth, so the tutor works from your course outline.

Core topics

13 topics
  1. Fluid properties: density, viscosity and surface tension
  2. Pressure and manometers
  3. Hydrostatic forces on surfaces
  4. Buoyancy and stability
  5. Fluid kinematics
  6. Conservation of mass: the continuity equation
  7. The Bernoulli equation
  8. The momentum equation
  9. Dimensional analysis and similitude
  10. Laminar and turbulent pipe flow
  11. Major and minor losses in pipes
  12. Boundary layers, drag and lift
  13. Pumps and pump selection

From still water to pipe networks

The course starts with fluids at rest: pressure, manometers, forces on dams and gates, and buoyancy. It then moves to fluids in motion, where three conservation laws do most of the work: mass in the continuity equation, energy in the Bernoulli equation, and momentum. The second half applies them to real flow: dimensional analysis for scale models, friction and losses in pipes, and drag on bodies.

Where marks are lost

Common slips are mixing gauge and absolute pressure, forgetting that a manometer fluid differs from the fluid in the pipe, applying Bernoulli across a pump or where friction matters, and taking the wrong friction factor for the Reynolds number. Students practise stating the assumptions before writing the equation, as the worked problem below does.

Lab reports on pipe flow or flow measurement are assessed as the student's own work; tutors explain the theory and the analysis behind them.

Working from your course outline

Each university sets its own order and depth, so the tutor starts from your course outline, tutorial sheets and past papers, and practises the problem types your course examines.

A question, worked through

A continuity and Bernoulli problem on a pipe contraction. Continuity gives the speed; Bernoulli gives the pressure.

Question

Water (density 1000 kg m⁻³) flows through a horizontal pipe that narrows from 0.10 m to 0.05 m in diameter. The velocity in the wide section is 2.0 m s⁻¹. Find the velocity in the narrow section and the pressure drop between the sections, ignoring losses.

  1. Assumptions: steady, incompressible flow along a horizontal pipe, with no losses between the two sections.
  2. Continuity: A₁v₁ = A₂v₂. The area ratio is (0.10 ÷ 0.05)² = 4, so v₂ = 4 × 2.0 = 8.0 m s⁻¹.
  3. Bernoulli for a horizontal pipe: p₁ − p₂ = ½ρ(v₂² − v₁²) = ½ × 1000 × (8.0² − 2.0²).
  4. p₁ − p₂ = 500 × 60 = 30 000 Pa, so the pressure falls by 30 kPa as the water speeds up.

Answer v₂ = 8.0 m s⁻¹, and the pressure drops by 30 kPa.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Fluid Mechanics considered difficult?

It asks for physical judgement as well as algebra: which control volume to draw, which equation applies and which assumptions hold. Practising that judgement on many problems is what tuition adds.

Do you help with lab reports?

With the theory and the analysis behind them, yes. The report itself is assessed as your own work, so the tutor does not write any part of it.

When should Fluid Mechanics tuition start?

In the first weeks of the semester, since statics and the conservation equations come first and the rest of the course uses them.

How much does Fluid Mechanics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the university, the course code and the course outline on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
