Answering a business question with data
These courses teach a practical chain: start from a decision someone has to make, choose the measures that bear on it, gather and clean the data, analyse it, and present a recommendation a manager can act on. The tools are often spreadsheets and dashboard software; the hard part is judgement.
Where marks are lost
Reports lose marks when they describe charts instead of drawing conclusions, report a change without its cause, or recommend something the data does not support. Tutors practise the step from figure to finding to recommendation, as in the worked problem below.
Reports and presentations are your own
Case reports, dashboards and presentations are assessed as the student's own work. A tutor explains the methods with similar cases and gives feedback on the student's reasoning, but does not write or build any part of assessed work.
A question, worked through
A revenue question that separates the three things behind it: traffic, conversion and order value.
Question
An online shop had 12,000 visitors, 360 orders and RM27,000 of revenue in March, and 15,000 visitors, 390 orders and RM31,200 of revenue in April. Calculate the conversion rate and average order value for each month, and explain what drove the change in revenue.
- Conversion rate = orders ÷ visitors: March 360 ÷ 12,000 = 3.0%; April 390 ÷ 15,000 = 2.6%.
- Average order value = revenue ÷ orders: March RM27,000 ÷ 360 = RM75; April RM31,200 ÷ 390 = RM80.
- Revenue rose by RM4,200, or 15.6%. Visitors rose 25% and order value 6.7%, but conversion fell from 3.0% to 2.6%.
- Finding: growth came from more visitors and larger orders, while a smaller share of visitors bought. Recommendation: check where the new visitors came from and whether the checkout changed.
Answer Conversion fell from 3.0% to 2.6% and order value rose from RM75 to RM80; revenue grew 15.6%, driven by traffic and order value.
Frequently asked questions
Is Business Insights a statistics course?
Partly. It uses descriptive statistics and some forecasting, but most marks go to choosing the right measures, interpreting them and writing recommendations a manager can use.
Can a tutor write my case report?
No. Reports are assessed as your own work. The tutor explains the methods with similar cases and gives feedback on your reasoning.
When should Business Insights tuition start?
Before the first case report or data exercise, since the same chain of question, analysis and recommendation runs through every assessment.
How much does Business Insights tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the university, the course code and the course outline on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
