Engineering Mathematics Tuition Online for University Students
Engineering Mathematics for degree and diploma students: calculus, differential equations, Laplace transforms, matrices, vector calculus and Fourier series, taught from your course outline.
Afterkelas tutors Engineering Mathematics online for university and diploma students in civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical and other engineering programmes. Tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, on the methods your course examines.
What Engineering Mathematics covers
The core topics of engineering mathematics across the first two years of a degree. Universities split them into courses their own way, so the tutor works from your course outline.
Core topics
13 topics- Functions, limits and complex numbers
- Differentiation and its applications
- Integration techniques and applications
- First-order differential equations
- Second-order linear differential equations
- Laplace transforms
- Matrices, determinants and eigenvalues
- Partial differentiation
- Multiple integrals
- Vector calculus
- Fourier series
- Partial differential equations
- Numerical methods
The mathematics behind every engineering course
Engineering Mathematics supplies the tools the rest of the degree uses: differential equations for circuits, vibrations and heat flow, Laplace transforms for control systems, matrices for structures and networks, vector calculus for fluid flow and electromagnetism. A gap in the first-year calculus courses shows up later in engineering courses that never mention mathematics in their title.
Tutors teach each method with the engineering problem it solves, so the steps make sense and are easier to remember under exam conditions.
Where marks are lost
Most lost marks are method marks in long problems: an integration by parts set up the wrong way round, a partial fraction step skipped before an inverse Laplace transform, an arithmetic slip in a determinant. Tutors drill full, tidy working and the checks that catch slips, such as substituting a solution back into the differential equation, as in the worked problem below.
Working from your course outline
Each university splits these topics into its own courses and orders them differently, so the tutor starts from your course outline, tutorial sheets and past papers. Assessed tutorials and assignments are your own work; the tutor explains the methods behind them with similar problems.
A question, worked through
A second-order linear differential equation with initial conditions, the model behind damped vibrations and RLC circuits.
Question
Solve y″ + 3y′ + 2y = 0, given y(0) = 1 and y′(0) = 0.
- Try y = eʳᵗ: the characteristic equation is r² + 3r + 2 = 0, so (r + 1)(r + 2) = 0 and r = −1 or r = −2.
- General solution: y = Ae⁻ᵗ + Be⁻²ᵗ.
- y(0) = 1 gives A + B = 1. Differentiating, y′ = −Ae⁻ᵗ − 2Be⁻²ᵗ, and y′(0) = 0 gives −A − 2B = 0.
- Solving, B = −1 and A = 2, so y = 2e⁻ᵗ − e⁻²ᵗ.
- Check: y(0) = 2 − 1 = 1 and y′(0) = −2 + 2 = 0, as required.
Answer y = 2e⁻ᵗ − e⁻²ᵗ.
Frequently asked questions
Is university Engineering Mathematics much harder than SPM Additional Mathematics?
It builds on the same calculus and algebra but moves faster and goes further, into differential equations, transforms and linear algebra. Gaps from school, especially in differentiation and integration, cause most of the trouble, and they can be fixed.
Do you teach diploma Engineering Mathematics too?
Yes. Diploma courses cover much of the same core at their own depth, and the tutor follows your course outline.
When should Engineering Mathematics tuition start?
In the first weeks of the semester, before the first test, since each topic builds on the one before.
How much does Engineering Mathematics tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the university, the course code and the course outline on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
