IGCSE vs SPM comes down to where your child may want to study at 18. Both are end-of-secondary qualifications, but in Malaysia, public universities, Form Six, Matriculation and the civil service ask for SPM, and even a student with A Levels or the IB Diploma who applies through UPU still needs an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah.[1]
IGCSE, set by Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel, opens the other doors. Malaysian private colleges accept it on the same terms as SPM for A Level and Foundation, and UK universities treat it as a GCSE-level qualification. The useful question is which doors your child may need, and some families keep both open.
This guide sets the two side by side, sorts recognition by goal, sums up the 2026 debate over SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and ends with a decision guide and the routes that give a student both. Every rule is checked against the exam boards, UPU, the ministries and the scholarship providers as of 7 October 2026. Afterkelas teaches both tracks and runs neither exam.
What is the difference between IGCSE and SPM?
SPM: Malaysia's national exam
Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) is the exam at the end of Form 5, set and run by Lembaga Peperiksaan (LP) at the Ministry of Education. It has been held since 1964, and since 2021 it has examined the KSSM curriculum, with 95 subjects and 182 papers on offer. Most candidates sit it at government and government-aided schools. The rest come from MRSM and other agency schools, religious schools, private schools, and private candidates, who numbered 23,719 in SPM 2025.[2]
There is one SPM a year. SPM 2026 begins with the Bahasa Melayu speaking test on 26 October and ends with the last written paper on 17 December, for 420,879 candidates.[3] Our SPM 2026 timetable lists every paper.
IGCSE: one name, two exam boards
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education is a subject-by-subject qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. Two boards set it. Cambridge International Education calls its version Cambridge IGCSE and offers over 70 subjects in any combination; Pearson Edexcel calls its version the International GCSE.[4] The two boards set different papers for subjects with the same name, so the board and the syllabus code on a student's exam entry matter more than the label "IGCSE".
Malaysian candidates sit IGCSE in two series a year, June and November. Cambridge also runs a March series, but only for centres in India, and Pearson holds its International GCSE exams in May and June and in November.[5] Most candidates take it at international and private schools. MARA's dual-certificate MRSMs enter students too, and a private candidate registers through British Council Malaysia or a school that accepts outside candidates.[6]
The cohorts are far apart in size. Over 22,000 Malaysian students sat Cambridge exams, IGCSE and A Level together, in the June 2026 series, against 420,879 candidates for SPM 2026, and Malay as a Foreign Language was Malaysia's most popular Cambridge IGCSE subject.[7]
IGCSE vs SPM: the side-by-side comparison
Here are the two qualifications on the points families ask about most. "IGCSE" covers both boards unless a cell names one.
| SPM | IGCSE | |
|---|---|---|
| Set by | Lembaga Peperiksaan (LP), Ministry of Education Malaysia | Cambridge International Education (Cambridge IGCSE) or Pearson Edexcel (International GCSE) |
| Where it is taken | Government and government-aided schools, MRSM and other agency schools, religious and private schools, and private candidates | International and private schools, MARA's dual-certificate MRSMs, and private candidates through British Council Malaysia or a school that accepts them |
| Exam sessions | Once a year, late October to December (SPM 2026: 26 October to 17 December) | Two series a year in Malaysia: June and November |
| Curriculum | KSSM, the national curriculum, over Form 4 and Form 5 | The board's syllabus for each subject, usually over two years (Year 10 and Year 11) |
| Subjects | Core subjects (Bahasa Melayu, English, Sejarah, Mathematics, Pendidikan Islam or Moral, and a science) plus up to five electives chosen by stream | No compulsory subjects; the school sets the list. Cambridge's ICE group award needs at least seven subjects from five groups |
| Assessment | Written papers in Form 5, speaking and listening tests in Bahasa Melayu and English, a science practical test, and coursework in 57 subjects | Exams at the end of the course, with oral, practical or coursework parts in some subjects; many Cambridge subjects split into Core and Extended papers |
| Grades | A+, A, A-, B+, B, C+, C, D, E and G. A credit is C or better | Cambridge: A* to G. Pearson Edexcel: 9 to 1, where 7, 4 and 1 line up with A, C and G |
| Language | Mainly Bahasa Melayu; Dual Language Programme classes learn science and mathematics in English | English, apart from language subjects |
| Cost | No school fees in government schools | About RM20,000 to RM100,000 a year in international school fees (2024); private candidates pay the exam centre |
| Results | Once a year: SPM 2025 results came out on 31 March 2026 | January for the November series and August for the June series |
| Second chances | Sit again the next year as a private candidate, or SPM Ulangan in July for Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah and Mathematics | Re-sit any subject in the next June or November series; each subject is certified separately |
What counts as a credit
Most entry rules count credits. In SPM a credit, or kepujian, is grade C or better, and only passed subjects are printed on the certificate. Cambridge grades IGCSE from A* to G in Malaysia, since its 9 to 1 version is offered only in its administrative zone 3, and in subjects with Core and Extended papers Definition Cambridge's two levels of entry in many IGCSE subjects. Core papers cover less of the syllabus and lead to grades C to G; Extended papers cover all of it and lead to grades A* to E. a Core candidate can reach C at most.[8] Pearson grades from 9 to 1: the bottom of grades 7, 4 and 1 broadly lines up with the bottom of A, C and G, and 9 sits above the old A*.
Language, fees and results
National schools teach mainly in Bahasa Melayu and international schools in English. Schools in the Ministry's Dual Language Programme teach the science and mathematics subjects in English, and their SPM papers in those subjects are set in both languages.[9]
On cost, the Ministry sets no school fees in government schools; a school's PIBG may ask for a contribution agreed at its annual meeting. International school fees ran from about RM20,000 to RM100,000 a year when The Edge surveyed the sector in September 2024, with Tier 1 schools at RM80,000 to RM100,000.[10] Those figures date from 2024, so ask each school for its current fee schedule.
SPM 2025 results came out on 31 March 2026, and the date for SPM 2026 had not been announced by 7 October. IGCSE results come twice a year: for the November 2026 series, Cambridge releases them on 14 January 2027 and Pearson on 21 January 2027.[11]
Is IGCSE recognised in Malaysia?
Yes, though not for every route. Recognition depends on where the student wants to go next, so it helps to take each goal in turn.
Public universities through UPU
Public universities admit through UPU, and every route into them asks for SPM. SPM leavers need five credits including Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah for Asasi. Students with A Levels, the IB Diploma or AUSMAT apply in the STPM/Setaraf category, and they too must hold SPM with a credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah, plus MUET or an accepted English test. The routes before a degree follow the same pattern: Form Six (STPM) needs an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu, and the Ministry's Matriculation Programme takes only that year's SPM candidates.[12]
Private colleges and universities
Private colleges set the same bar for both: five credits. The national standard for Foundation programmes asks for a pass in SPM with credits in five subjects, or a pass in O Level with at least a C in five subjects. Sunway College's Cambridge A Level asks for a pass with five credits in SPM, O Level or an equivalent, and Taylor's College asks for five credits from SPM (including English) or from O Level or IGCSE.[13] Subject prerequisites come on top, so check the course page for the subjects your child would need.
Universities abroad
Universities in the UK and elsewhere treat both as secondary qualifications. They admit to degrees on A Level, the IB, STPM or a foundation year, and use IGCSE or SPM to check English and Mathematics. UK NARIC found Cambridge IGCSE comparable to the UK GCSE, Oxford Brookes describes SPM as GCSE equivalent, and the University of Manchester says it may accept SPM English at CEFR C1 (from 2021), the 1119 English paper or IGCSE English for its English requirement.[14]
The civil service
The Public Services Commission (SPA) requires a credit, at least grade C, in Bahasa Melayu at SPM level, or a qualification the government recognises as equivalent.[15] The rule names SPM, and we found no published SPA list that names an IGCSE Malay paper as an equivalent, so a student who may want a government job should plan for SPM Bahasa Melayu.
Scholarships
Scholarships split more sharply than universities do. These were the rules in the 2026 rounds, which mainly served SPM 2025 leavers:
| Scholarship (2026 round) | Accepts IGCSE? | What it asked for |
|---|---|---|
| JPA Program Penajaan Nasional | No | A first sitting of SPM, at school or as a private candidate, with 8A+ or 9A+ in listed subjects and at least A- in the rest |
| PETRONAS, for SPM leavers | No | An SPM 2025 candidate who is a Malaysian citizen aged 16 to 19 in 2026 |
| Bank Negara Kijang, pre-university | No | At least 8As (A+ and A only) in the latest SPM, with a CEFR level |
| Bank Negara Kijang, undergraduate | Not named | At least 3As at A Level, plus five credits including Bahasa Melayu, English and Mathematics in SPM or another recognised secondary exam |
| Khazanah Global, Foundation and A Level | Yes | At least 8As in the latest SPM or IGCSE; 8As in IGCSE trial exams also qualify |
| Shell Malaysia | Yes | 8As (A or A+) in SPM, or excellent IGCSE grades (A* or A), and willingness to take A Levels at a selected boarding institution |
The 2027 rounds had not been announced by 7 October 2026. In 2026 the PETRONAS window ran from 31 March to 10 April, opening on SPM results day, and Shell says its application opens each year on the day SPM results are released.[16] IGCSE students aiming for an SPM-only award would need to sit SPM, and JPA's top programme counts only a first sitting.
Do international school students need SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah?
On 20 January 2026, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysian students in international schools must, without exception, sit SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah. Two days later the Ministry of Education's director-general said they must study both subjects under the national curriculum but that sitting SPM is their choice, and on 15 May the Higher Education Minister said SPM with both subjects remains compulsory for entry to public universities.[17] By 7 October 2026 no circular had set out how or when the requirement applies to international schools, so the UPU rule above still decides university entry.

SPM sitting a year
SPM is the direct route. A national school, a fully residential school or an MRSM prepares students for the exam that UPU, Form Six, Matriculation and JPA all read. If you also want an international qualification, a place in MARA's dual-certificate programme adds Cambridge IGCSE in Form 4 without giving up SPM.
MARA lists the dual-certificate programme at MRSMs from Johor Bahru to Kuching and Langkawi, and MRSM Kuching's 2026 calendar puts its Cambridge IGCSE exams from 30 September to 12 November, the November series.[18] Results for that series reach students in January.
How an IGCSE student can sit SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah
Outside MRSM, this is how a student holds both: stay on IGCSE and add SPM as a private candidate, either alongside IGCSE or after it.
- Decide by Year 10 whether public routes matter
- Study KSSM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah
- Register online in March or April
- Sit SPM from late October
- Apply through UPU with A Level, IB or AUSMAT
Check the rules before you plan the timetable. Under the Ministry's rules, a first-time SPM candidate, at school or private, registers six core subjects: Bahasa Melayu, English, Sejarah, Mathematics, Science, and Pendidikan Islam or Pendidikan Moral. To receive the certificate a candidate must pass Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and the Ministry's wording on age is that a private candidate must be 16 on 1 January of the exam year. For SPM 2026, private candidates registered online at sppat.moe.gov.my from 1 March to 30 April 2026.[19] The 2027 window has not been announced.
The six-subject rule may change. In January 2026 the Deputy Education Minister said the ministry was studying whether to let candidates sit only Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and three days later DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the Cabinet had agreed to allow it for students from non-government schools who want a public university place.[20] No change to SPM registration had been announced by 7 October 2026, so plan on six subjects and check LP's notice when registration opens.
Give both subjects time. Bahasa Melayu includes a speaking test and a listening test, and Sejarah Paper 2 asks for structured answers and essays; our guides to the SPM speaking tests and to Sejarah Paper 2 explain both formats. Afterkelas tutors teach SPM Bahasa Melayu and SPM Sejarah online, live, 1-to-1 or in small groups.
A student who sits SPM and misses the Bahasa Melayu credit has a second chance: SPM Ulangan, held in July for Bahasa Melayu, Sejarah and Mathematics, is open to candidates who already hold SPM grades. In 2026 it ran from 14 to 16 July for 12,974 candidates.[21] UPU accepts a Bahasa Melayu credit earned in SPM Ulangan.
Which is harder, IGCSE or SPM?
No exam board publishes a comparison, but the two sit at the same level. UK NARIC found Cambridge IGCSE comparable to the GCSE, and UK universities such as Oxford Brookes treat SPM as GCSE equivalent. LP also brought in assessment experts from Cambridge University Press & Assessment to help set SPM 2025 standards. The workload is shaped differently. SPM asks for a fixed core, Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah included, and every candidate sits the same papers. IGCSE lets the school choose the subjects, and in Cambridge subjects with Core and Extended papers a weaker student can sit Core papers, which cap the grade at C.
In practice, language often decides it. A child who reads and writes best in English tends to find IGCSE papers easier to work with, and a child strongest in Bahasa Melayu may do better in SPM, which puts Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah on every candidate's timetable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IGCSE and SPM?
SPM is Malaysia's national exam at the end of Form 5, set by Lembaga Peperiksaan on the KSSM curriculum and held once a year from late October to December. IGCSE is an international qualification set by Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel, taken subject by subject in English, with exams in June and November in Malaysia. SPM has a fixed core that includes Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, while for IGCSE the school chooses the subjects.
Is IGCSE equivalent to SPM?
For private colleges, yes: the national standard for Foundation programmes accepts five SPM credits or five O Level grades of C or better, and colleges such as Sunway and Taylor's accept five credits from SPM, O Level or IGCSE for A Level. For public universities, Form Six, Matriculation and the civil service, no: they ask for SPM itself, and public universities, Form Six and the civil service also require an SPM credit in Bahasa Melayu.
Can I enter a public university in Malaysia with IGCSE?
Not with IGCSE alone. Students who go on to A Levels, the IB Diploma or AUSMAT can apply through UPU in the STPM/Setaraf category, but the rules for session 2026/2027 still require SPM with a credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah, plus MUET Band 1.0 or, for these three qualifications, IELTS, TOEFL or a similar test.
Do international school students have to sit SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah?
Not to finish school. On 22 January 2026 the Ministry of Education said Malaysian students in international schools must study both subjects under the national curriculum but may choose whether to sit SPM. They need SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah for a public university place through UPU, which the Higher Education Minister repeated in May 2026.
Can an IGCSE student sit only SPM Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah?
Not under the rules in force on 7 October 2026. A first-time SPM candidate must register six core subjects: Bahasa Melayu, English, Sejarah, Mathematics, Science, and Pendidikan Islam or Pendidikan Moral. In January 2026 the Deputy Education Minister said the ministry was studying whether to let candidates sit only Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the Cabinet had agreed to allow it for students from non-government schools, but no change to registration had been announced by 7 October 2026.
Which is harder, IGCSE or SPM?
No exam board publishes a comparison, and both sit at the level of the UK GCSE. SPM asks for more fixed subjects, including Bahasa Melayu and Sejarah, and every candidate sits the same papers. IGCSE lets the school choose the subjects, and Cambridge's Core papers cap the grade at C. For most students, the language they learn best in makes the bigger difference.
Which scholarships accept IGCSE results?
In the 2026 rounds, Khazanah Global accepted at least 8As in SPM or IGCSE, including IGCSE trial results, and Shell accepted 8As in SPM or excellent IGCSE grades (A* or A). JPA's Program Penajaan Nasional, PETRONAS and Bank Negara's Kijang pre-university award asked for SPM. The 2027 rules and dates had not been announced by 7 October 2026.
When are IGCSE and SPM exams held in Malaysia?
SPM is held once a year: SPM 2026 runs from the Bahasa Melayu speaking test on 26 October to the last written paper on 17 December. IGCSE has two series in Malaysia, June and November. Cambridge's March series is for centres in India only, and Pearson's International GCSE runs in May and June and in November.
What is the MRSM IGCSE programme?
It is MARA's Dual Certification Programme at selected MRSMs. Students follow the national curriculum with Cambridge Lower Secondary and the Checkpoint test in Forms 1 and 2, sit Cambridge IGCSE in Form 4 and SPM in Form 5, so they leave with both certificates and keep the UPU route open.
Do I need SPM for a government job?
The Public Services Commission (SPA) requires a credit, at least grade C, in Bahasa Melayu at SPM level, or a qualification the government recognises as equivalent. If a government career is possible, plan for SPM Bahasa Melayu.
