To sit Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, O Level or A Level papers in June 2027 as a private candidate in Malaysia, you enter through an exam centre such as British Council Malaysia, because the exam boards do not take entries from candidates.[1] British Council's June window usually opens around the end of November and closes for standard entries in late February for Cambridge and in mid to late March for Pearson Edexcel, and every centre sets its own fee.[2]

The boards' own deadlines come later than any centre's, late entries can cost two or three times the normal fee, and a few papers (coursework, some practicals and some speaking tests) depend on what your centre can run. This guide covers who can enter, where, the June 2027 dates, the fees centres listed in October 2026, the papers private candidates cannot take, and what happens between registration and results.

Afterkelas is a tuition company and does not run exams or take entries. Your centre's own page or email is the final word on its dates and fees.

Who can sit IGCSE or A Level as a private candidate in Malaysia?

A private candidate is anyone entered by a centre they do not study at. In Malaysia that usually means students taught at home, students at schools or online schools that do not run Cambridge or Pearson exams, SPM leavers preparing for A Level on their own, and anyone resitting a subject. You choose the board and find a centre that accepts private candidates. From then on, every arrangement goes through that centre.

Cambridge also runs a March series, but its syllabus documents state that March is only available to centres in India, so candidates in Malaysia sit Cambridge papers in June or November.[3] Cambridge's June 2027 timetable is not public yet. In June 2026, papers for Malaysia's administrative zone (Zone 5) ran from 23 April to 9 June.[4] Pearson's June 2027 timetables are already final.[5]

Pearson requires centres in Malaysia to use its regional ("R") International GCSE papers where they exist, and for 2026 to 2027 it offers them in the June series only. The November series runs on the main papers, and not every centre offers it.[6]

If you are aiming for a Malaysian public university

Plan for SPM as well. UPU's entry rules for the 2026/2027 intake ask A Level holders for SPM with a credit in Bahasa Melayu and a pass in Sejarah, plus MUET or, subject to conditions, an accepted English test such as IELTS.[7]

Where can you sit IGCSE as a private candidate in Malaysia?

British Council Malaysia is the centre Cambridge names for private candidates in Malaysia, and several schools accept outside candidates too. When we checked in October 2026, these four had their terms online:

British Council registers private candidates for both boards through its online School Exams Registration System and seats them at its venues in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, where Cambridge papers start at 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Malaysia time.[8] UCSI sells entries for each subject through its own online shop.[9] MIGS listed two subjects for its November 2026 entries, Islamic Studies (2068) and Mathematics (0580).[10] Cranbridge handles Pearson entries and posts its deadlines for each series.[11]

This is not a full list, and centres change what they offer from one series to the next. British Council Malaysia's exam venues are in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, so candidates in Sabah and Sarawak should search Cambridge's "Find a centre" and Pearson's international centre finder for a school closer to home.

Before you pay any centre, ask:

  • Does it accept private candidates for your exact syllabus and option, for example Paper 6 instead of Paper 5?
  • What is its own closing date for June 2027, and what does it charge after that?
  • What is the fee for each subject, and is there a registration or administration fee on top?
  • Does it run the practical exams or speaking tests your syllabus needs?
  • Where and when will you sit each paper, and how will it send your Statement of Entry?
  • How does it release results and certificates, and does it handle access arrangements and enquiries about results?

When does IGCSE registration for June 2027 open and close?

Two sets of dates matter: the exam board's, which bind every centre, and your centre's, which come first. For Cambridge, the June 2027 dates follow its published calendar; where Cambridge has not yet printed the day, the 2026 date is shown as last year's.[12]

Cambridge IGCSE, O Level and AS & A Level: June 2027 dates

Late April to mid-June 2027Written papers (23 April to 9 June in Malaysia's zone in 2026).

The 2026 dates in that table come from the Cambridge Handbook, which also sets the late fee rules: late fees for any entry or change after the final deadline, and a very late fee after the late entries deadline, when results may also be released later than everyone else's.[13]

Pearson publishes exact dates a year ahead, including what happens to your fee after each one.[14] If you are at a government school, note that the June papers straddle the 2027 mid-year school break, which runs from 21 May to 5 June in Group A states and from 22 May to 6 June in Group B; our 2027 school holidays guide has every date.

Centre deadlines come before the boards'

A centre has to collect forms and payments, check them and then submit to the board, so its closing date is earlier. For each of the three Pearson series it lists, Cranbridge's normal entry closes eight days before Pearson's: 8 October 2026 for the January 2027 International A Level series, against Pearson's 16 October. MIGS closed its November 2026 Cambridge entries on 30 July, more than two weeks before Cambridge's 16 August deadline. UCSI asks for May/June entries before 10 February.

Has the November 2026 window closed?

For Cambridge, yes. British Council Malaysia shows its Cambridge October/November 2026 registration as closed, and Cambridge's own late entries deadline for November was 21 September 2026, so the next Cambridge sitting from Malaysia is June 2027.[15] Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE deadline was 12 September, so an entry now carries late fees, if a centre still accepts one. International A Level candidates have one more option before June: Pearson's January 2027 series closes on 16 October 2026, with the fee doubled from 17 October and trebled from 14 November.

How much does it cost to sit IGCSE as a private candidate in Malaysia?

The boards charge the centre, and the centre charges you, usually with supervision and administration on top. Cambridge and Pearson both say the fee you pay is set by your centre, which is why published prices differ. These are the figures we found, with their dates:

Published private candidate fees in Malaysia, checked in October 2026
CentrePublished feeDate and conditions
UCSI SchoolsCambridge IGCSE: RM720 for most subjects, including Mathematics 0580, Additional Mathematics 0606, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610; RM820 for English as a Second Language 0510 and Computer Science 0478; RM920 for ICT 0417. AS & A Level: RM770 to RM1,760 for most subjects. Pearson International GCSE: RM720.Prices in its online shop in October 2026; the June items carry no year. For May/June, its terms set a late fee of RM310 a subject from 10 February (the late fee item in its shop shows RM320) and a very late fee of RM720 from 10 April.
MIGSRM1,325 per paper, Cambridge IGCSENovember 2026 series, which closed at 12:00 noon on 30 July 2026; paid in person; non-refundable.
British Council MalaysiaShown only inside its registration system, once you choose your subjects6% SST for candidates who are not Malaysian; the registration fee is non-refundable; changes to an entry carry a service charge.
Cranbridge Education GroupIn its application forms, not on the pageA late entry costs twice the normal fee and a high late entry three times.
EduSwasta (a school directory)RM600 to RM850 a subjectA 2026 estimate by type of subject that names no centre. Its top figure is for coursework subjects, which Cambridge closes to private candidates.

As a worked example, five IGCSEs at the prices UCSI listed in October 2026 (Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at RM720 each, and English as a Second Language at RM820) come to RM3,700. Register after 9 February and UCSI's late fee adds RM310 a subject, another RM1,550. The EduSwasta range in the table is a directory's estimate and names no centre.[16]

Read the refund terms before you pay. British Council keeps the registration fee and will not move an exam fee to another session. If you withdraw in writing by the regular closing date, it refunds the entry fee only; after that, a refund (minus an administration fee) depends on reasons such as serious illness with a medical certificate, a death in the family or national service.[17] MIGS treats its fee as non-refundable once registration is confirmed, and UCSI refunds nothing once it has paid Cambridge. Pearson itself refunds centres automatically only until 22 April 2027.

Which papers can private candidates not take?

Coursework is the main one. Cambridge does not let private candidates enter any syllabus option that includes coursework, because the centre does not supervise their work and a private tutor cannot authenticate it.[18] Pearson allows coursework only when the centre sets, supervises, authenticates and marks it, and will not mark coursework done with a private tutor.[19] Practicals and speaking tests depend on the subject:

Practicals, coursework and speaking: what private candidates take
SubjectThe catchWhat private candidates usually do
Cambridge IGCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics (0610, 0620, 0625)Every candidate takes one practical paper: Paper 5, a practical test in a laboratory, or Paper 6, Alternative to Practical.Take Paper 6, a one-hour written paper with no experiments.
Cambridge AS & A Level Biology, Chemistry, Physics (9700, 9701, 9702)Paper 3, Advanced Practical Skills, is a two-hour laboratory exam with no written alternative.Find a centre that runs Paper 3. UCSI, for one, lists AS Chemistry with Paper 3 included.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English (0500)Candidates take Paper 2 or a coursework portfolio.Take Paper 1 and Paper 2. The speaking and listening test is optional.
Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)Under the 2027 to 2029 syllabus, every candidate also takes a speaking test, graded separately.Enter only if your centre conducts and records the speaking test.
Pearson International GCSE Biology, Chemistry, PhysicsNo practical exam: experimental skills are tested in the two written papers.Nothing extra to arrange.
Pearson International A Level sciencesPractical skills are tested in written papers, Unit 3 at AS and Unit 6 at A Level.Nothing extra to arrange.
Pearson International GCSE English Language A (4EA1)Candidates take Paper 2 or internally assessed coursework.Take Papers 1 and 2. The spoken language endorsement is optional.
Pearson International GCSE Chinese, French, German, SpanishThe speaking component is compulsory and is conducted by the centre.Check that the centre has a qualified person to run it.

The Cambridge rows come from the syllabuses for the June 2027 series.[20] The Pearson rows come from its specifications and its guide to the International A Level sciences.[21] If a subject you need is not in the table, the syllabus or specification says, in its section on making entries, whether private candidates can take it.

How to register as a private candidate, step by step

From choosing subjects to exam day
  1. Choose syllabuses and options
  2. Pick a centre and note its deadline
  3. Register with your MyKad or passport
  4. Pay and ask for any access arrangements
  5. Check your Statement of Entry

Start with the syllabus codes and options, for example Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 with Paper 6, or Pearson International A Level Mathematics units. Then pick a centre that offers exactly those, and write down its closing date, which is earlier than the board's.

At British Council you create an account in the registration system, fill in the form online and give a valid email address, because every message about your entry goes there. You need a valid MyKad or passport, and if you are under 18 a parent or guardian completes the registration for you. Schools ask for similar things: MIGS wants a recent passport photo and a copy of your MyKad or passport, and Cranbridge a copy of your passport or MyKad with proof of payment. If you are retaking a subject, have your previous centre number and candidate number ready.

Pay in the way the centre asks. British Council takes debit and credit cards and FPX online banking and does not process an entry until it is paid; UCSI takes full payment online when you register; MIGS takes payment in person and no cheques. When your Statement of Entry arrives, check your name exactly as it appears on your MyKad or passport, every subject, and every option or tier. British Council says corrections to personal details made before certificates are issued are usually free.[22] A change of subject or option costs a service charge, and after the registration deadline a late fee.

How do access arrangements work for private candidates?

Ask at the same time as you register. The centre applies to the board for you, and both boards close these requests well before the exams: Cambridge's modified papers deadline falls in January and its access arrangements deadline in February, and Pearson's last day to order modified papers is 31 January 2027. British Council Malaysia asks for a recent medical report and at least three months' notice, and, depending on the board, can arrange 25 to 100 percent extra time, supervised breaks, a computer, a reader, separate invigilation, and Braille or large print papers.[23] UCSI's deadline for modified papers is earlier still: 1 November for the May/June series. Ask your centre whether an approval carries over to a later series, and bring the approval letter on exam day.

What happens on exam day?

British Council's checklist for private candidates:

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes before the paper starts.
  • Bring your MyKad or passport and a printed copy of your Statement of Entry. Candidates without both are not allowed to sit.
  • Bring your own pens and pencils in a clear bag, and a calculator your board allows. British Council provides no stationery.
  • Leave your phone, smart watch and any other electronic device outside the exam room.
  • Bring the approval letter if you have access arrangements.

The invigilator checks your identity at every paper.[24] Cambridge papers start at 9:00 am or 1:00 pm Malaysia time, which are also Cambridge's Key Times for Malaysia. If you arrive after the Key Time, the centre may still let you sit, but Cambridge may not accept the script, and you may get "NO RESULT" for the syllabus.

Pearson papers start later in the day in Malaysia. Under its May/June start times, papers the timetable lists as "Morning" start at 1:00 pm Malaysia time and "Afternoon" papers at 4:00 pm (6:00 am and 9:00 am in the UK, which is on British Summer Time then). This applies to International A Level and to the regional International GCSE papers.[25] Subjects with no regional paper, such as Computer Science, follow later times, and Pearson tells British Council candidates to check timings with the British Council, so go by your Statement of Entry.

How do private candidates get their results?

Pearson releases June 2027 International A Level results on 12 August 2027 and International GCSE results on 19 August 2027. Cambridge has not announced its June 2027 results days; in 2026 it released AS & A Level results on 11 August and IGCSE and O Level results on 18 August.

British Council gives private candidates login details to see results online on the day, through Cambridge's candidate results site or Pearson's ResultsPlus Direct. You then collect the printed statement of results, and later the certificate, at the British Council office where you registered, with your ID. A parent or guardian can collect for you with their own ID, a letter of authorisation from you and your Statement of Entry. British Council Malaysia keeps uncollected statements and certificates for up to 12 months.[26] Schools that take private candidates release results on the board's results day and pass on certificates when they arrive: Cambridge sends June certificates to centres in mid-October, and Pearson issues them by November.

On Cambridge certificates and statements of results, the name of the centre does not appear for private candidates, so the certificate does not show where you sat.

Resits, remarks and the November 2027 series

Enquiries about results go through your centre. British Council lets its Cambridge and Pearson private candidates apply online in the same registration system.[27] Cambridge's deadline for enquiries on June results was 20 September in 2026, and after an enquiry your syllabus grade can stay the same or go up, though a component mark can fall. Pearson also lets private candidates ask it directly for a review of marking.

To resit with Cambridge, the next series is November 2027, since March is closed to Malaysia. AS Level results can be carried forward towards the full A Level within 13 months. Pearson International A Level units can be resat in October 2027 or January 2028. Pearson International GCSE candidates resit in November, on main papers at centres that offer them, or in June 2028, and must retake all the written papers unless the qualification is modular.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sit IGCSE as a private candidate in Malaysia?

Yes. You register through an exam centre that accepts private candidates, such as British Council Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur or Penang, or a school such as UCSI or MIGS. Cambridge and Pearson do not take entries from candidates directly.

When is the IGCSE registration deadline for June 2027 in Malaysia?

It depends on the centre, and centres close before the exam boards. British Council usually closes standard entries in late February for Cambridge and in mid to late March for Pearson Edexcel. Pearson's own deadline is 21 March 2027; Cambridge's falls in February 2027 (21 February in 2026). UCSI asks for May/June entries before 10 February.

How much is the IGCSE exam fee for a private candidate in Malaysia?

Each centre sets its own fee. In October 2026 UCSI listed RM720 for most Cambridge IGCSE subjects and RM820 to RM920 for some, and MIGS charged RM1,325 a paper for the November 2026 series. British Council Malaysia shows its fees inside its registration system and adds 6% SST for candidates who are not Malaysian. Ask your centre for its June 2027 price.

What happens if I register late?

You pay more, if the centre still accepts you. Pearson doubles the entry fee from 22 March 2027 and trebles it from 22 April 2027. Cambridge charges late fees after its February deadline and a very late fee after its mid-April late entries deadline. UCSI's terms, as posted in October 2026, add RM310 a subject from 10 February and RM720 from 10 April.

Can private candidates take science practicals?

For Cambridge IGCSE sciences, private candidates usually take Paper 6, Alternative to Practical, a written paper with no experiments. Cambridge AS & A Level sciences include Paper 3, a laboratory exam, so you need a centre that runs it. Pearson International GCSE and International A Level sciences test practical skills in written papers.

Can private candidates do coursework?

Not with Cambridge, which closes coursework options to private candidates. With Pearson, coursework is possible only if the centre sets, supervises, authenticates and marks it, and Pearson will not mark coursework done with a private tutor. Most private candidates take the all-exam route.

Is the Cambridge March series available in Malaysia?

No. Cambridge's syllabuses say the March series is only available to centres in India, so candidates in Malaysia sit Cambridge papers in June or November.

Can I still register for the October/November 2026 series?

Not for Cambridge. British Council Malaysia shows its Cambridge October/November 2026 registration as closed, and Cambridge's own late entries deadline was 21 September 2026. The next Cambridge sitting from Malaysia is June 2027.

What do I need on exam day?

Your MyKad or passport, a printed Statement of Entry, your own pens and pencils in a clear bag and a calculator your board allows. British Council asks you to arrive 30 minutes early and does not admit candidates without their ID and Statement of Entry.

When are the June 2027 results released?

Pearson releases International A Level results on 12 August 2027 and International GCSE results on 19 August 2027. Cambridge has not announced its June 2027 dates; in 2026 it released AS & A Level results on 11 August and IGCSE results on 18 August.
