Cambridge IGCSE Tuition Online in Malaysia

Cambridge IGCSE classes planned against the syllabus code, the tier and the exam series on the student's entry.

Afterkelas teaches Cambridge IGCSE online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the syllabus code on the exam entry, from Mathematics 0580 to Physics 0625, teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, at Core or Extended.

Cambridge IGCSE subjects we teach

Every subject below with a link has its own page, with the syllabus topics, the papers and a worked question. The class plan starts from the four-digit code on the exam entry, because Cambridge often runs more than one syllabus under a familiar name: First Language English and English as a Second Language are different papers, and so are Mathematics 0580 and the 9 to 1 version some UK schools sit.

Core, Extended and the ceiling on the grade

In Mathematics and the sciences the school enters each student for Core or Extended. Core papers can lead to grades C to G and Extended papers to A* to E, so the entry decides the highest grade available before the student writes a word. A student aiming for an A has to sit Extended, and one who is near the line needs the Extended-only content taught early enough to make the case to the school.

Tutors plan against the tier on the entry, and for a borderline student they start with the Extended material rather than leaving it until the end. That gives the teacher evidence when entries are confirmed, and it keeps the option open longer than a Core-only plan would.

The practical component in the sciences

Physics, Chemistry and Biology each end with a practical component: a laboratory practical test, or an Alternative to Practical paper that examines the same skills in writing. Schools without full laboratory access usually choose the written paper, and it rewards habits that can be drilled, such as units in column headings, readings to a consistent precision and a line of best fit drawn through the data rather than through every point.

Students tend to leave this paper until the last month, which is a mistake, because the skills improve steadily with practice and the marks are reliable once they do. Tutors bring past practical papers into ordinary classes from the start of the course.

How Cambridge IGCSE classes are planned

Before the first class the advisor asks for the syllabus code, the tier and the exam series, then matches a tutor who knows those papers. The tutor follows the order the school teaches the syllabus, consolidates each topic with past questions from the same code, and marks them against Cambridge's published mark schemes, which are strict about wording.

Command words get taught directly. "State" wants a fact, "describe" wants what happens, "explain" wants a reason, and "suggest" wants an idea applied to something unfamiliar. Many lost marks come from correct knowledge written to the wrong command word, and that is quick to fix once the student can see it.

A question, worked through

A question in the style of Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Extended tier, on reverse percentages. The trap is to add the percentage back on, which gives the wrong starting value.

Question

The value of a laptop falls by 15% every year. Two years after it was bought, it is worth RM2890. Find the price of the laptop when it was new.

  1. A fall of 15% leaves 85% of the value each year, so the multiplier for one year is 0.85.
  2. After two years the value is the original price × 0.85 × 0.85, which is the original price × 0.7225.
  3. Set up the equation: original price × 0.7225 = 2890.
  4. Divide: 2890 ÷ 0.7225 = 4000.
  5. Check by working forwards: 4000 × 0.85 = 3400, and 3400 × 0.85 = 2890.

Answer The laptop cost RM4000 when it was new.

Frequently asked questions

Which Cambridge IGCSE subjects do you teach?

Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Economics, Business Studies, Accounting and Computer Science, each against the syllabus code on the student's entry. Tell the advisor the code and the tier, and a tutor who knows those papers is proposed.

Is Extended worth it for a student near the borderline?

Usually, if the student is aiming for a B or above, since Core cannot award more than a C. The school makes the entry, and the useful thing tuition can do is cover the Extended-only content early so the teacher has evidence of what the student can do before entries close.

When are the Cambridge IGCSE exams?

Cambridge runs two main series, May/June and October/November. Most Malaysian international schools enter students for May/June at the end of Year 11, with results in August. Some students resit or take extra subjects in October/November.

Do you prepare students for the Alternative to Practical paper?

Yes. The paper examines planning, recording, graphing and evaluating experiments in writing, and those skills respond well to regular practice, so tutors include past practical questions throughout the course instead of saving them for the end.

How much does Cambridge IGCSE tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the subjects, the syllabus codes and the exam series on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
