Matriculation Mathematics Tuition Online (SM015, SM025)

Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 for the matriculation science stream: ten chapters each semester, from number systems to probability distributions.

Afterkelas teaches Matriculation Mathematics online to science-stream students at the matriculation colleges, for SM015 in Semester I and SM025 in Semester II. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, in English or Bahasa Melayu.

What Matriculation Mathematics covers

The chapters of both courses in the order the colleges teach them, ten in each semester.

Semester I: Mathematics 1 (SM015)

10 topics
  1. Number systems
  2. Equations, inequalities and absolute values
  3. Sequences and series
  4. Matrices and systems of linear equations
  5. Functions and graphs
  6. Polynomials
  7. Trigonometric functions
  8. Limits and continuity
  9. Differentiation
  10. Applications of differentiation

Semester II: Mathematics 2 (SM025)

10 topics
  1. Integration
  2. Differential equations
  3. Numerical methods
  4. Conics
  5. Vectors
  6. Data description
  7. Permutations and combinations
  8. Probability
  9. Random variables
  10. Special probability distributions

Ten chapters a semester

SM015 starts with number systems, equations and inequalities and runs through matrices, functions, polynomials and trigonometry to limits and differentiation. SM025 opens with integration and differential equations, adds numerical methods, conics and vectors, then spends its second half on statistics and probability. Ten chapters in a semester of a few months leaves little slack: a student who falls behind in one week starts the next chapter already short.

Tutors follow the college's order, chapter by chapter, and put extra time into the chapters later ones lean on: functions and differentiation in Semester I, integration in Semester II.

Where marks are lost

Most lost marks are method marks: an answer with no working, a definite integral evaluated without showing the limits, an inequality solved without checking which intervals hold. PSPM questions are structured, so each step is marked, and tutors drill complete, tidy working.

Statistics in Semester II brings a different kind of trouble: choosing the right distribution and reading what a question means by "at least" or "at most". Students practise turning the wording into a probability statement before they calculate anything.

Most of the grade comes before the exam

Continuous assessment and the summative test make up 60 percent of the course grade before the PSPM, so steady work during the semester counts directly. Tutors can explain the mathematics behind an assignment and check the student's understanding, but the assignment itself is the student's own work.

A question, worked through

A Semester II question on integration by parts, from the integration chapter of SM025.

Question

Evaluate ∫₀¹ x eˣ dx.

  1. Choose u = x, so du = dx, and dv = eˣ dx, so v = eˣ.
  2. Integration by parts: ∫ u dv = uv − ∫ v du, so ∫ x eˣ dx = x eˣ − ∫ eˣ dx = x eˣ − eˣ + C.
  3. Apply the limits: [x eˣ − eˣ] from 0 to 1 = (e − e) − (0 − 1).
  4. That is 0 + 1, so the integral equals 1.

Answer 1.

Frequently asked questions

Is SM015 harder than SPM Additional Mathematics?

It moves faster and goes further, adding limits and continuity, matrices and more formal working. A student comfortable with SPM Additional Mathematics has a good base, but the pace leaves less time to catch up.

Is Mathematics taught in English in Matriculation?

Yes. Mathematics is taught and examined in English. Tutors can explain in Bahasa Melayu where that helps, then practise answers in the English terms the PSPM uses.

When should Matriculation Mathematics tuition start?

In the first weeks of Semester I, before functions and differentiation, since the rest of SM015 and much of SM025 builds on them.

How much does Matriculation Mathematics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the semester, the college and the latest assessment results on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
