Foundation Mathematics Tuition Online (Mathematics I and II)

Foundation Mathematics I and II: functions, matrices, calculus and statistics first, then polynomials, vectors, complex numbers and probability distributions.

Afterkelas teaches foundation Mathematics online to students on university foundation programmes, for Mathematics I and Mathematics II. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, working from the student's own course outline.

What foundation Mathematics covers

The topics MQA's curriculum guidelines set for each course. Universities order and name them in their own way, so tutors map them to the student's outline.

Mathematics I

8 topics
  1. Numbers
  2. Functions
  3. Sequences and series
  4. Matrices
  5. Derivatives
  6. Integrals
  7. Introduction to statistics
  8. Introduction to probability

Mathematics II

9 topics
  1. Sequences and series
  2. Polynomial functions
  3. Algebra
  4. Logarithms and exponents
  5. Trigonometry
  6. Vectors
  7. Complex numbers
  8. Discrete random variables
  9. Binomial and Poisson distributions

Two courses with different jobs

Mathematics I is the course every foundation student takes, science or arts. It moves quickly from numbers and functions through matrices to derivatives and integrals, then finishes with an introduction to statistics and probability. Mathematics II, taken by science students, goes back over sequences and series in more depth and adds polynomials, logarithms, trigonometry, vectors in three dimensions, complex numbers and the binomial and Poisson distributions.

Students who did SPM Additional Mathematics meet much of Mathematics I again, in less time; students who did not need to build the algebra quickly. Tutors judge which case applies from the first assessment and plan from there.

Where marks are lost

Most lost marks are method marks: an integral with no limits shown, an inverse matrix with an arithmetic slip in the determinant, a probability calculated from the wrong distribution. Tutors drill complete working, so a slip costs one mark instead of the whole question.

Calculus applications reward a clear setup. A question on area or on a maximum asks the student to build the function first, and that step is where most students hesitate.

Working from your course outline

Universities write their own foundation courses within MQA's guidelines, so topic names and order differ. The tutor starts from the student's outline and past assessments and uses the lists above as a shared map. Coursework is the student's own; the tutor explains the mathematics behind it.

A question, worked through

A Mathematics I question on integrals: the area between a curve and the x-axis.

Question

Find the area of the region enclosed by the curve y = 4 − x² and the x-axis.

  1. Find where the curve meets the x-axis: 4 − x² = 0, so x = −2 and x = 2.
  2. The curve is above the axis between these points, so the area is ∫₋₂² (4 − x²) dx.
  3. Integrate: [4x − x³/3] from −2 to 2 = (8 − 8/3) − (−8 + 8/3).
  4. That gives 16 − 16/3 = 32/3.

Answer 32/3 square units, about 10.67.

Frequently asked questions

Is foundation Mathematics harder than SPM Additional Mathematics?

Mathematics I covers much of the same ground faster, and Mathematics II goes further, with vectors, complex numbers and probability distributions. A student comfortable with Additional Mathematics has a good base but less time to consolidate it.

Do you follow my university's course outline?

Yes. Names and order differ between universities, so the tutor works from the outline and past assessments the student shares.

When should foundation Mathematics tuition start?

In the first weeks of the first semester, since functions and algebra feed every later topic and the semesters are short.

How much does foundation Mathematics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the university, the course code and the latest assessment results on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
