Planning unit by unit
Edexcel IAL Mathematics is built from units sat in different series, January, June or October, so the plan starts with the student's schedule: which units are due next, and which earlier units might be worth resitting. A student sitting P1 and S1 in January needs a different term from one sitting P3 and M1 in June.
Because the best result in each unit counts, a resit can be a sensible way to lift the final grade. Tutors help decide where a resit gains the most, usually a pure unit with room to improve.
Where marks are lost
Pure units punish algebra slips, and the later units chain techniques together: a P3 integration may need a trigonometric identity, a substitution and a log rule in one question. Students practise setting out every line, which keeps the method marks when an answer goes wrong.
Applied units lose marks on modelling: a missing force in a mechanics diagram, or a statistics answer that calculates correctly but does not answer the question in context. Tutors drill diagrams and interpretation alongside the calculations.
Who teaches IAL Mathematics
Tutors are university students and graduates with strong A Level or equivalent results, screened before they teach, and matched to the units and series the student is entered for. An academic advisor asks for the unit schedule and any unit results already received.
A question, worked through
A P1-style stationary points question. Factorising the derivative gives both points at once, and the second derivative settles their nature.
Question
Find the coordinates of the stationary points on the curve y = x³ − 6x² + 9x + 1, and determine whether each is a maximum or a minimum.
- Differentiate: dy/dx = 3x² − 12x + 9 = 3(x² − 4x + 3) = 3(x − 1)(x − 3).
- Stationary points where dy/dx = 0: x = 1 and x = 3. Then y = 1 − 6 + 9 + 1 = 5 at x = 1, and y = 27 − 54 + 27 + 1 = 1 at x = 3.
- Second derivative: d²y/dx² = 6x − 12. At x = 1 it is −6, negative, so (1, 5) is a maximum.
- At x = 3 it is 6, positive, so (3, 1) is a minimum.
Answer A maximum at (1, 5) and a minimum at (3, 1).
Frequently asked questions
Which applied units should my child take?
It depends on the university course and the student's strengths. Mechanics suits engineering and physics; Statistics suits economics, biology and many business courses. Schools often decide the combination, and tutors plan for whatever is on the entry.
Is it worth resitting a unit?
Often, if the unit result is well below the others and there is time before the next series. Since the best result counts, a focused resit of one unit can lift the overall grade.
How is it different from Cambridge 9709?
The mathematics overlaps, but Edexcel IAL is built from separate units sat across series with resits, while Cambridge 9709 is examined through papers at the end of the AS and the A Level.
