Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics Tuition Online (0580)
Cambridge 0580 Mathematics at Core or Extended, with the mental arithmetic the non-calculator papers have demanded since 2025.
Afterkelas teaches Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the 0580 syllabus teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, at Core or Extended, for the calculator and non-calculator papers.
What Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics covers
The nine content areas of the 0580 syllabus. Every area has Core material, and Extended adds harder material within the same areas, so an Extended candidate is examined on both.
Syllabus topics (0580)

The non-calculator papers since 2025
From the June 2025 series, half of every 0580 entry is sat without a calculator: Paper 1 at Core and Paper 2 at Extended. Students who reached Year 10 doing every fraction, percentage and standard-form question on a calculator now meet them by hand, against the clock, and their marks on these papers often trail their marks on the calculator papers.
The fix is regular, short practice of the skills the non-calculator papers lean on: fractions and negative numbers, percentages of awkward amounts, standard form, estimation, and simplifying surds at Extended. Tutors build these into every class for a few minutes, so they become routine long before the exam.
Where students lose marks in 0580
Method marks go to working that an examiner can follow. A student who writes only the final number loses the method marks the moment that number is wrong, while a student who sets out each step keeps most of them. The same applies to the calculator papers, where a correct answer with no working can still lose marks on a "show that" question.
Accuracy rules cost marks quietly. Answers are expected to three significant figures unless the question says otherwise, angles to one decimal place, and money to the nearest cent, and rounding too early in a long calculation shifts the final answer out of range. Geometry questions also want reasons: an angle found correctly without the circle theorem or angle fact behind it can lose a mark.
Core or Extended
The school enters each student for Core or Extended. Core papers can only award grades C to G, so a student aiming for a B or above has to be on Extended. For a student near the line, tutors teach the Extended-only material early instead of leaving it to the end of the course, which gives the teacher evidence before entries close and keeps the option open.
A question, worked through
A 0580-style question that could appear on the non-calculator paper. Elimination keeps the arithmetic whole-number, which is why it is the method to reach for without a calculator.
Question
Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + 4y = 5 and 5x − 2y = 17.
- Make the y terms cancel. Multiply the second equation by 2: 10x − 4y = 34.
- Add it to the first equation: 3x + 4y + 10x − 4y = 5 + 34, so 13x = 39 and x = 3.
- Substitute into the first equation: 3(3) + 4y = 5, so 4y = −4 and y = −1.
- Check in the second equation: 5(3) − 2(−1) = 15 + 2 = 17, which matches.
Answer x = 3, y = −1.
Frequently asked questions
Should my child take Core or Extended?
Extended if they are aiming for a B or above, since Core cannot award higher than a C. The school makes the entry; tuition can teach the Extended material early so a student near the line has the evidence the teacher needs.
What changed in the 2025 syllabus?
From June 2025, Paper 1 (Core) and Paper 2 (Extended) are sat without a calculator, while Papers 3 and 4 still allow one. Students now need fluent arithmetic by hand for half the marks, and classes practise it every week.
Does my child also need Additional Mathematics?
Not to pass IGCSE, but students planning A Level Mathematics or an engineering or science degree often take Additional Mathematics (0606) alongside 0580. It has its own page and its own tutors.
How much does Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the tier (Core or Extended), the exam series and the latest school report on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
