What Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A covers

Foundation or Higher
The school enters each student for Foundation or Higher. Foundation can award at most a grade 5, so a student aiming for a 6 or above has to sit Higher. For students near the line, tutors teach the Higher-only algebra early, which gives the teacher evidence before entries are made.
Higher tier's top grades are decided by the last questions on each paper: multi-step problems, algebraic proof, and functions. Students aiming for an 8 or 9 practise these regularly through the course, not only in the final term.
Two calculator papers, still marked for method
Both 4MA1 papers allow a calculator, which removes the arithmetic burden but not the need for working. Marks are given for method, and a question that says "show your working" can award nothing for a bare answer even when it is right. Students also lose marks by keying long calculations in one go and copying a rounded value into the next step.
Tutors teach students to write each step, keep full calculator values until the end, and round only the final answer to the accuracy the question asks for.
Who teaches Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics

A 4MA1 Higher-style compound percentage question. A calculator is allowed, so the marks go to setting up the multiplier and testing whole years.

Amira invests $5,000 at 3% compound interest per year. After how many whole years will the investment first be worth more than $6,000?
- Growing by 3% a year means multiplying by 1.03 each year, so the value after n years is 5000 × 1.03ⁿ.
- The target is a factor of 6000 ÷ 5000 = 1.2, so find the first whole n for which 1.03ⁿ > 1.2.
- Try values: 1.03⁶ = 1.194 to 3 decimal places, which is not enough; 1.03⁷ = 1.230, which is.
- Check the money: after 6 years the investment is worth $5,970.26, and after 7 years $6,149.37.

Frequently asked questions
Should my child sit Foundation or Higher?
Higher if they are aiming for a grade 6 or above, since Foundation cannot award more than a 5. The school makes the entry; tuition can teach the Higher-only material early so a student near the line has the evidence the teacher needs.
Is Edexcel Mathematics A the same as Cambridge 0580?
The mathematics overlaps heavily, but the papers do not. Edexcel sets two calculator papers per tier and grades from 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0580 has a non-calculator paper and grades from A* to G. Tutors prepare for the board on the student's entry.
Does my child need Further Pure Mathematics too?
Not for IGCSE itself, but students heading for A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics or engineering often take Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1) alongside Mathematics A. It has its own page and tutors.
