Matriculation Ekonomi Tuition Online (AE015, AE025)

Ekonomi 1 and Ekonomi 2 for the matriculation accounting stream: microeconomics in Semester I and macroeconomics in Semester II, taught in Bahasa Melayu.

Afterkelas teaches Matriculation Ekonomi online to accounting-stream students at the matriculation colleges, for AE015 in Semester I and AE025 in Semester II. University tutors run live classes, 1-to-1 or in small groups, explaining in English or Bahasa Melayu.

What Matriculation Ekonomi covers

The chapters of both courses, with the English meaning first and the Malay title in brackets.

Semester I: Ekonomi 1 (AE015), microeconomics

6 topics
  1. Introduction to economics (Pengenalan Ekonomi)
  2. Demand, supply and market equilibrium (Permintaan, Penawaran dan Keseimbangan Pasaran)
  3. Elasticity of demand and supply (Keanjalan Permintaan dan Keanjalan Penawaran)
  4. Consumer behaviour theory (Teori Perlakuan Pengguna)
  5. Production and cost theory (Teori Pengeluaran dan Kos)
  6. Market structure (Struktur Pasaran)

Semester II: Ekonomi 2 (AE025), macroeconomics

8 topics
  1. Introduction to macroeconomics (Pengenalan Makroekonomi)
  2. National income accounting (Perakaunan Pendapatan Negara)
  3. Determining equilibrium national income (Penentuan Keseimbangan Pendapatan Negara)
  4. Money and banking (Wang dan Bank)
  5. Inflation and unemployment (Inflasi dan Pengangguran)
  6. The budget, fiscal policy and monetary policy (Belanjawan, Dasar Fiskal dan Dasar Kewangan)
  7. International economics (Ekonomi Antarabangsa)
  8. Economic growth (Pertumbuhan Ekonomi)

Microeconomics, then macroeconomics

AE015 covers how markets work: demand and supply, elasticities, consumer behaviour, the theory of production and cost, and market structures from perfect competition to monopoly. AE025 moves to the whole economy: national income, its equilibrium, money and banking, inflation and unemployment, government policy, trade and growth.

Both courses lean on the same tools, so the first three chapters of AE015 are worth getting right before anything else.

Diagrams and calculations

A large share of Ekonomi marks sits in diagrams and short calculations: shifting a demand or supply curve and finding the new equilibrium, working out an elasticity, reading cost curves, computing national income or the multiplier. A diagram with unlabelled axes, or a curve shifted the wrong way, loses marks however good the explanation beside it.

Tutors drill the standard diagrams until each can be drawn from memory with every label in place, and fix the steps of each calculation so they become reliable marks.

Taught in Bahasa Melayu

In the accounting stream, Mathematics and Accounting are taught in English, but Ekonomi is taught in Bahasa Melayu, with its own terms: keanjalan, kos sut, keluk permintaan, pendapatan negara. A student from an English-speaking home can learn the idea in English first, but every answer is practised in the Malay terms the course uses.

A question, worked through

A Semester I question on income elasticity, from the chapter Keanjalan Permintaan dan Keanjalan Penawaran. The course is taught in Malay, so the question is in Malay; the working is the same in any language.

Question

(Income rises from RM3,000 to RM3,600 a month and the quantity demanded of good X rises from 50 to 55 units. Calculate the income elasticity of demand and state the type of good.)

  1. Percentage change in quantity demanded = (55 − 50) ÷ 50 × 100% = 10%.
  2. Percentage change in income = (3,600 − 3,000) ÷ 3,000 × 100% = 20%.
  3. Income elasticity of demand = 10% ÷ 20% = 0.5.
  4. The value is positive, so X is a normal good (barang normal), and below 1, so it is a necessity (barang keperluan): demand rises more slowly than income.

Answer Income elasticity = 0.5, so good X is a normal good and a necessity.

Frequently asked questions

Is Matriculation Ekonomi taught in English?

No. Ekonomi is taught in Bahasa Melayu at the matriculation colleges, even though Mathematics and Accounting in the same stream are in English. Tutors can explain in English and practise answers in Malay.

Is AE015 the same as SPM Ekonomi?

It covers similar ground in more depth, with consumer behaviour theory, production and cost theory and market structures. A student who did not take Ekonomi for SPM starts from the first chapter like everyone else.

When should Matriculation Ekonomi tuition start?

Early in Semester I, when demand, supply and elasticity are taught, since the later chapters of both courses use them.

How much does Matriculation Ekonomi tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the semester, the college and the latest assessment results on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
