Physical chemistry first, organic chemistry last
SK015 builds the physical and inorganic base: the mole and stoichiometry, atomic structure and electron configurations, the periodic table, bonding and molecular shape, the states of matter, and two chapters of equilibria. SK025 begins with three more physical chapters, kinetics, thermochemistry and electrochemistry, then spends the rest of the semester on organic chemistry, from hydrocarbons and benzene to amines and amino acids.
The two halves need different habits. Physical chemistry is calculation, done step by step with units; organic chemistry is a map of reactions, reagents and conditions that has to be learnt and then used. Tutors plan each semester around the habit it needs.
Where marks are lost
Equilibrium and ionic equilibria questions lose marks when the stoichiometry is skipped or the units of the equilibrium constant are wrong. Setting out initial, change and equilibrium amounts in a table, as the worked question below does, prevents most of these errors.
Organic chemistry loses marks to missing conditions and careless mechanisms. Students keep one reaction map for SK025 and practise using it to plan conversions of two or three steps.
Practical work
Practical tests and lab reports are part of continuous assessment, which carries 40 percent of the course grade. Tutors can explain the chemistry behind a titration or a rate experiment and how to treat the results, but the report is the student's own work.
A question, worked through
A Semester I question on chemical equilibrium. Setting out the initial, change and equilibrium amounts keeps the stoichiometry right.
Question
1.00 mol of hydrogen and 1.00 mol of iodine are heated in a sealed 1.00 dm³ flask until equilibrium is reached: H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g). At equilibrium the flask contains 1.56 mol of HI. Calculate Kc.
- Forming 1.56 mol of HI uses 0.78 mol of H₂ and 0.78 mol of I₂, from the 1 : 1 : 2 ratio.
- At equilibrium, H₂ = 1.00 − 0.78 = 0.22 mol and I₂ = 0.22 mol. In 1.00 dm³ these are also the concentrations in mol dm⁻³.
- Kc = [HI]² ÷ ([H₂][I₂]) = 1.56² ÷ (0.22 × 0.22) = 2.4336 ÷ 0.0484.
- Kc = 50.3. It has no units here, because the concentration units cancel for this reaction.
Answer Kc = 50.3.
Frequently asked questions
Is SK025 harder than SK015?
It is different. SK015 rewards careful calculation, while most of SK025 is organic chemistry, which rewards a well-organised memory of reactions and conditions. Students strong in one are not always strong in the other.
Is Chemistry taught in English in Matriculation?
Yes. Chemistry is taught and examined in English. Tutors can explain in Bahasa Melayu where that helps, then practise answers in the English terms the PSPM uses.
When should Matriculation Chemistry tuition start?
In the first weeks of Semester I, since the mole and stoichiometry from the first chapter run through every calculation that follows.
