Cells and genes, then whole organisms
SB015 works from the inside out: the molecules of life, cell structure, cell division, then a long run of genetics, from inheritance and population genetics to gene expression, mutation and recombinant DNA technology, ending with reproduction and development. SB025 widens to biodiversity, ecology and evolution, then covers enzymes, respiration and photosynthesis, and finishes with the physiology chapters.
The genetics block in Semester I mixes calculation with explanation, and the physiology block in Semester II is heavy on processes that must be described in order. Tutors give each its own kind of practice.
Where marks are lost
Many lost marks come from answers that are nearly right. "Enzymes are killed by heat" earns little where "the enzyme is denatured, its active site changes shape and the substrate no longer fits" earns the marks. Students practise the precise wording for each process in the course.
Genetics questions lose marks when gametes are skipped or ratios are guessed. Writing the parents, the gametes and the cross in full, as the worked question below does, makes the ratio follow without guesswork.
Practical work
Practical tests and lab reports are part of continuous assessment, which carries 40 percent of the course grade. Tutors can explain the biology behind an experiment and how to present and interpret the results, but the report is the student's own work.

In pea plants, round seeds (R) are dominant to wrinkled seeds (r), and yellow seeds (Y) are dominant to green seeds (y). Two plants heterozygous for both genes, RrYy, are crossed and produce 320 offspring. How many of each phenotype are expected?
- Each parent makes four kinds of gamete in equal numbers: RY, Ry, rY and ry.
- A 4 × 4 Punnett square gives 16 equally likely combinations, in the ratio 9 round yellow : 3 round green : 3 wrinkled yellow : 1 wrinkled green.
- Round yellow: 9/16 × 320 = 180. Round green: 3/16 × 320 = 60.
- Wrinkled yellow: 3/16 × 320 = 60. Wrinkled green: 1/16 × 320 = 20.
Answer 180 round yellow, 60 round green, 60 wrinkled yellow and 20 wrinkled green.
Frequently asked questions
Is Matriculation Biology mostly memory work?
Less than it looks. The terms must be exact, but genetics in Semester I needs calculation, and the physiology chapters reward explaining a process in order over listing facts.
Is Biology taught in English in Matriculation?
Yes. Biology is taught and examined in English. Tutors can explain in Bahasa Melayu where that helps, then practise answers in the English terms the PSPM uses.
