Who takes Further Mathematics
Further Mathematics suits students who find Mathematics comfortable and are heading for mathematics, physics, engineering or computer science, where it is often preferred and sometimes required. It covers ground those degrees start with, from complex numbers and matrices to differential equations.
The unit structure adds a planning question: which units count towards Mathematics and which towards Further Mathematics. The school usually decides, and tutors plan the order so each unit builds on what has already been sat.
Where marks are lost
Further Pure units reward rigour: proofs by induction with every stage written, complex-number answers in the form the question asks for, and algebra carried accurately through long questions. Students practise checking intermediate results before building on them.
Applied units at M2, M3, S2 and S3 levels assume the earlier units are secure. Students who resit a weak M1 or S1 before moving on usually find the later units far easier.

An FP1-style complex numbers question. Multiplying by the conjugate is the step that turns 1/z into the required form.
Question
Given z = 3 + 4i, find (a) |z|, (b) arg z in radians to 3 significant figures, and (c) 1/z in the form a + bi.
- |z| = √(3² + 4²) = √25 = 5.
- z lies in the first quadrant, so arg z = arctan(4 ÷ 3) = 0.927 radians.
- For 1/z, multiply top and bottom by the conjugate 3 − 4i: 1/z = (3 − 4i) ÷ ((3 + 4i)(3 − 4i)) = (3 − 4i) ÷ 25.
- So 1/z = 0.12 − 0.16i.
Answer (a) 5. (b) 0.927 rad. (c) 0.12 − 0.16i.
Frequently asked questions
Can my child take Further Mathematics without strong Mathematics results?
It is possible but hard, because the Further units assume fluent algebra and calculus. A student with a weak Mathematics unit usually gains more by securing it first.
How are units shared between Mathematics and Further Mathematics?
Each unit can count towards only one award. Schools set the combination, and the academic advisor checks it on the student's entry so classes cover the right units in the right order.
How is it different from Cambridge Further Mathematics?
Cambridge 9231 is examined through four papers, while Edexcel IAL Further Mathematics is built from Further Pure and applied units sat across series, with resits.
