Edexcel International A Level Physics Tuition Online (IAL)
Pearson Edexcel IAL Physics across all six units, including the two practical skills units, planned around the series each unit is sat.
Afterkelas teaches Pearson Edexcel International A Level Physics online to pre-university students in Malaysia. Tutors teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, unit by unit, from mechanics and materials to cosmology and the practical skills papers.
What Edexcel IAL Physics covers
The six units in the order most students sit them. Units 3 and 6 are written papers that test practical skills.
International AS
3 topics- Unit 1 (WPH11): Mechanics and Materials
- Unit 2 (WPH12): Waves and Electricity
- Unit 3 (WPH13): Practical Skills in Physics I
International A Level
3 topics- Unit 4 (WPH14): Further Mechanics, Fields and Particles
- Unit 5 (WPH15): Thermodynamics, Radiation, Oscillations and Cosmology
- Unit 6 (WPH16): Practical Skills in Physics II
Practical skills on paper
Units 3 and 6 test practical skills in written papers: planning an experiment, choosing instruments, recording and processing data, plotting graphs and evaluating uncertainties. Students who have done little lab work at school still face these questions, so tutors teach the core practicals and the routines the papers reward.
Uncertainty calculations and graph work, including gradients and logarithmic plots at Unit 6, are where these papers are won or lost, and they improve steadily with practice.
Definitions, derivations and calculations
Physics units mark definitions closely and expect some derivations and explanations to follow a standard line of reasoning. Students keep a list of definitions and practise them until they are exact.
Calculations lose marks to units, prefixes and significant figures. Setting out the equation, substituting with units and rounding only at the end prevents most of these losses.
Who teaches IAL Physics
Tutors are university students and graduates with strong physics results, screened before they teach, and matched to the units and series the student is entered for. An academic advisor asks for the unit schedule and any results so far.
A question, worked through
A Unit 1-style projectile question. Treating the horizontal and vertical motion separately is the whole method.
Question
A ball is kicked horizontally at 12 m s⁻¹ from the top of a cliff 20 m high. Ignoring air resistance, calculate (a) the time taken to reach the ground and (b) the horizontal distance travelled. Take g = 9.81 m s⁻².
- Vertically, the ball starts with zero vertical velocity and falls 20 m: s = ½gt², so t = √(2s ÷ g) = √(40 ÷ 9.81).
- t = √4.08 = 2.02 s, to three significant figures.
- Horizontally, the velocity stays at 12 m s⁻¹, since no horizontal force acts.
- Distance = 12 × 2.02 = 24.2 m.
Answer (a) 2.02 s. (b) 24.2 m.
Frequently asked questions
How are the practical units assessed?
As written papers that test practical skills: planning, measurement, data processing, graphs and uncertainties. Students prepare for them like any other unit, with past papers and the core practicals.
Should my child resit a unit?
If a unit result is well below the others and there is time before the next series, often yes, because the best result counts. The advisor and tutor look at the unit results together before deciding.
How is it different from Cambridge 9702?
The physics overlaps, but Edexcel uses six units sat across series with resits, while Cambridge examines through five papers at the end of the AS and the A Level, including a laboratory exam.
How much does Edexcel IAL Physics tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the units on the student's entry, the series and any unit results so far on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
