Organic chemistry across the units
Organic chemistry appears in four of the six units and grows with each: alkanes and alkenes in Unit 1, halogenoalkanes and alcohols in Unit 2, carbonyls and acids in Unit 4, and nitrogen compounds and synthesis in Unit 5. Students who keep one map of how functional groups convert into each other find the later units much easier.
Mechanisms need precision: arrows from the right place, lone pairs and partial charges shown, and conditions stated exactly. Tutors practise each mechanism until it is quick and accurate.
Calculations and practical units
Calculations run through every unit: moles, enthalpy changes, equilibrium constants, rates and electrode potentials. A consistent layout, with units at every step, prevents most lost marks.
Units 3 and 6 test practical skills in writing: methods, observations, data processing and evaluating errors. Tutors teach the core practicals and the questions they generate, so the student is ready whether or not they did each experiment at school.
Who teaches IAL Chemistry
Tutors are university students and graduates with strong chemistry results, screened before they teach, and matched to the units and series the student is entered for. An academic advisor asks for the unit schedule and any results so far.

A Unit 2-style calorimetry question. Using the total mass of solution and the moles of water formed are the two steps students most often miss.

50.0 cm³ of 1.00 mol dm⁻³ hydrochloric acid is mixed with 50.0 cm³ of 1.00 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide, and the temperature rises by 6.8 °C. Calculate the enthalpy change of neutralisation. Assume the solution has a density of 1.00 g cm⁻³ and a specific heat capacity of 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹.
- Mass of solution: 100.0 cm³ × 1.00 g cm⁻³ = 100.0 g.
- Energy transferred: q = mcΔT = 100.0 × 4.18 × 6.8 = 2842 J.
- Moles of water formed: 0.0500 dm³ × 1.00 mol dm⁻³ = 0.0500 mol.
- ΔH = −q ÷ n = −2842 ÷ 0.0500 = −56 840 J mol⁻¹, which is −56.8 kJ mol⁻¹. The sign is negative because the reaction is exothermic.
Answer ΔH = −56.8 kJ mol⁻¹.
