Explanations that earn the marks
IAL Biology marks specific points, and answers that describe a process in general terms collect little. A question on how a heart cycle produces pressure changes wants each stage named in order with what the valves do, not a fluent summary. Tutors teach students to plan the marking points before they write.
Longer questions often bring in data or a context the student has not met, and ask them to apply what they know. Practice with unfamiliar contexts is the best preparation, and past papers supply plenty.
Core practicals and statistics
Units 3 and 6 test practical skills in writing, built on the core practicals: methods, variables, data processing, statistical tests and evaluation. Students who know each core practical well can answer most of these questions, so tutors work through them systematically.

- The recessive phenotype frequency is q² = 0.16, so q = √0.16 = 0.4.
- Since p + q = 1, p = 1 − 0.4 = 0.6.
- Heterozygotes have frequency 2pq = 2 × 0.6 × 0.4 = 0.48.
- Check: p² + 2pq + q² = 0.36 + 0.48 + 0.16 = 1.
Answer The frequency of A is 0.6 and of a is 0.4; 48% of individuals are heterozygous.

Is IAL Biology good preparation for medicine?
Many medical schools ask for Biology and Chemistry at A Level or equivalent, and IAL Biology is widely accepted. Check each university's requirements, since some also ask for specific grades or subjects.
How is it different from Cambridge 9700?
The biology overlaps, but Edexcel uses six units sat across series with resits, while Cambridge examines through five papers at the end of the AS and the A Level.
