Cambridge IGCSE Economics Tuition Online (0455)
Cambridge 0455 Economics, with the diagrams, data handling and two-sided "discuss" answers that Paper 2 rewards.
Afterkelas teaches Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the 0455 syllabus teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across all six topics and both papers.
What Cambridge IGCSE Economics covers
The six topics of the 0455 syllabus, from scarcity and choice to globalisation. Paper 2 can draw on any of them in a single question.
Syllabus topics (0455)
6 topics- The basic economic problem
- The allocation of resources
- Microeconomic decision makers
- Government and the macroeconomy
- Economic development
- International trade and globalisation
Diagrams carry the explanation
IGCSE Economics expects a diagram wherever one helps: a shift in demand or supply, a production possibility curve, a change in a currency's price. A correct diagram with labelled axes and curves, and the new equilibrium marked, often earns marks that a paragraph alone cannot. A diagram drawn from memory but with the wrong curve moved earns nothing.
Tutors practise the standard diagrams until a student can draw each one quickly and label it fully, then work on reading a question for which curve moves and why.
Explaining, analysing and discussing
The command word sets the shape of the answer. "Explain" wants a chain of reasoning, one step leading to the next. "Analyse" wants that chain carried through to its effect. "Discuss" wants both sides and a conclusion that weighs them, and students who give one side well still lose the evaluation marks.
Students who know the theory often lose marks by writing in general terms. Paper 2 questions come with data and a context, and the best answers use both: the figures in the table, the country in the question, the firm described in the extract.
Who teaches IGCSE Economics
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 0455 syllabus and the student's exam series. An academic advisor asks for the entry details and a recent test before proposing a tutor.
A question, worked through
A 0455-style question on price elasticity of demand. The calculation takes two lines; the marks for part (c) go to linking the result to revenue.
Question
A café cuts the price of a sandwich from $4 to $3, and daily sales rise from 200 to 300. (a) Calculate the price elasticity of demand. (b) Is demand elastic or inelastic? (c) Explain what happens to the café's revenue from sandwiches.
- Percentage change in quantity demanded: (300 − 200) ÷ 200 × 100% = +50%.
- Percentage change in price: (3 − 4) ÷ 4 × 100% = −25%.
- PED = +50% ÷ −25% = −2. Its absolute value is greater than 1, so demand is price elastic.
- Revenue before = $4 × 200 = $800; after = $3 × 300 = $900. Revenue rises, because the percentage rise in sales is larger than the percentage cut in price.
Answer (a) −2. (b) Price elastic. (c) Revenue rises from $800 to $900, since quantity rises proportionally more than price falls.
Frequently asked questions
Is IGCSE Economics a lot of memorising?
Less than it looks. The definitions matter, but most Paper 2 marks go to explaining and analysing with a diagram and the data given, and to discussing both sides. Those are skills, and they improve with marked practice.
How are the "discuss" questions marked?
They reward analysis of both sides and a judgement that weighs them. An answer that argues one side well can still lose the evaluation marks, so tutors teach a short structure: the case for, the case against, and a conclusion that says which matters more and why.
Does IGCSE Economics need strong maths?
Only basic arithmetic: percentages, percentage change and reading tables and graphs. Elasticity and growth-rate questions use these, and a little practice makes them reliable marks.
How much does Cambridge IGCSE Economics tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and the latest school report on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
