Apply every answer to the business in the question
Business Studies marks reward application: using the details of the business in the question, its size, its product, its customers and its figures. An answer that explains motivation theory well but never mentions the bakery in the case study collects the knowledge marks and loses the rest.
Tutors train a simple habit: every point names the business and uses one fact from the material. It feels repetitive at first and lifts marks quickly, because it is what the mark scheme looks for.
Calculations and recommendations
Each paper includes calculations: break-even, profit, cash flow, ratios and percentage changes. They are short and follow fixed methods, so they should be dependable marks, and tutors drill them until they are.
The longest questions ask for a recommendation, such as which of two options the owner should choose. These want both options analysed in the context of the business and a justified decision, including what the choice depends on. A recommendation with no reason, or reasons that ignore the case, earns little.
Who teaches IGCSE Business Studies
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 0450 syllabus and exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent test or case-study answer, which shows quickly whether the gap is knowledge, application or evaluation.
A question, worked through
A 0450-style break-even question. The calculation is one division; the second part shows why break-even matters to the owner.
Question
A bakery has fixed costs of $12,000 a month. It sells cakes at $25 each, and the variable cost of each cake is $10. (a) Calculate the break-even output. (b) Calculate the profit if it sells 1,000 cakes in a month.
- Contribution per cake = price − variable cost = $25 − $10 = $15.
- Break-even output = fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit = $12,000 ÷ $15 = 800 cakes a month.
- At 1,000 cakes, the bakery sells 200 cakes beyond break-even, and each adds $15 to profit: 200 × $15 = $3,000.
- Check the long way: revenue 1,000 × $25 = $25,000; total costs $12,000 + 1,000 × $10 = $22,000; profit $3,000.
Answer (a) 800 cakes a month. (b) A profit of $3,000.
Frequently asked questions
My child knows the theory but scores low in Business Studies. Why?
Usually because the answers are not applied to the business in the question. The mark scheme rewards using the case details, and a short routine of naming the business and using one fact per point fixes it quickly.
How is the case study paper different?
Paper 2 is built around one business described in an insert, and every question asks about that business. It rewards reading the case closely, using its figures, and making recommendations that fit its situation.
Are there calculations in Business Studies?
Yes: break-even, profit, cash flow, ratios and percentage changes. They follow fixed methods and are among the most dependable marks on both papers.
How much does Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and a recent test or case-study answer on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
