Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science Tuition Online (0478)
Cambridge 0478 Computer Science: the theory of Paper 1, and the pseudocode, trace tables and logic of Paper 2.
Afterkelas teaches Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science (0478) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the 0478 syllabus teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, from data representation to programming and Boolean logic.
What Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science covers
The ten topics of the 0478 syllabus. Topics 1 to 6 are examined in Paper 1 and topics 7 to 10 in Paper 2.
Paper 1: Computer systems
6 topics- Data representation
- Data transmission
- Hardware
- Software
- The internet and its uses
- Automated and emerging technologies
Paper 2: Algorithms, programming and logic
4 topics- Algorithm design and problem-solving
- Programming
- Databases
- Boolean logic
Paper 1: precise theory
Paper 1 tests the theory: binary and hexadecimal, data transmission and error checking, hardware, software, the internet and emerging technologies. The marks go to precise answers. "It makes the computer faster" earns nothing for a question on cache memory; "it stores frequently used instructions close to the processor so they are fetched sooner" earns the mark.
Conversions and calculations, between number bases, of file sizes and of data rates, follow fixed methods and should be dependable marks. Tutors drill them until the student never needs to stop and think about the steps.
Paper 2: pseudocode, trace tables and logic
Paper 2 asks students to read, write and correct algorithms in Cambridge's pseudocode, complete trace tables, write SQL-style database queries, and work with logic gates and truth tables. It ends with a longer scenario question that asks for a full program, and that question rewards planning before writing.
Students who program in class often lose marks for not following the pseudocode conventions, or for code that would work but does not meet every requirement in the scenario. Tutors practise both: writing to the conventions, and ticking off each requirement as it is met.
Who teaches IGCSE Computer Science
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 0478 syllabus and exam series. In class, students practise programming in the language their school uses, most often Python, while exam answers follow the pseudocode the paper expects.
A question, worked through
A 0478-style data representation question. Working through place values avoids the trial-and-error that costs time in the exam.
Question
Convert the denary number 181 into (a) 8-bit binary and (b) hexadecimal.
- Write the 8-bit place values: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1.
- Take out the largest values that fit: 181 − 128 = 53, 53 − 32 = 21, 21 − 16 = 5, 5 − 4 = 1, 1 − 1 = 0. So the bits for 128, 32, 16, 4 and 1 are 1: 10110101.
- For hexadecimal, split the binary into two nibbles: 1011 and 0101. 1011 is 11, written B, and 0101 is 5.
- Check: B5 in hexadecimal is 11 × 16 + 5 = 181.
Answer (a) 10110101. (b) B5.
Frequently asked questions
Which programming language does the exam use?
The written papers use Cambridge's pseudocode. In class, students practise in a real language, most often Python, so they can test their algorithms, and they learn to translate their code into the pseudocode the paper expects.
My child is good at coding but scores low. Why?
Usually because of Paper 1 theory answers that are not precise enough, or Paper 2 answers that ignore the pseudocode conventions or miss a requirement in the scenario. Both are fixed with marked practice against past-style questions.
Is IGCSE Computer Science suitable for a beginner?
Yes. The syllabus assumes no prior programming, and tutors start with simple algorithms and trace tables before moving to full programs.
How much does Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
