Cambridge IGCSE Accounting Tuition Online (0452)
Cambridge 0452 Accounting, from double entry to financial statements and ratios, with the layouts the mark scheme expects.
Afterkelas teaches Cambridge IGCSE Accounting (0452) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the 0452 syllabus teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across all seven topics and both papers.
What Cambridge IGCSE Accounting covers
The seven topics of the 0452 syllabus, from the accounting equation to interpreting a business's results.
Syllabus topics (0452)
7 topics- The fundamentals of accounting
- Sources and recording of data
- Verification of accounting records
- Accounting procedures
- Preparation of financial statements
- Analysis and interpretation
- Accounting principles and policies
Double entry first
Almost every mistake in IGCSE Accounting traces back to double entry. A student unsure which account to debit gets the ledger wrong, the trial balance does not agree, and the financial statements built on it carry the error. Tutors spend the first weeks on the direction of each entry and the accounting equation behind it, until entries no longer need thinking about.
Verification comes next: trial balances, control accounts, bank reconciliations and the correction of errors. These questions test whether a student understands why records disagree, and they reward a methodical layout.
Layouts, adjustments and interpretation
Financial statements are marked for layout as well as figures. Headings, dates, the order of items and the right subtotals all carry marks, and a correct number in the wrong place earns less than it should. Adjustments at the year end, accruals and prepayments, depreciation and irrecoverable debts, each change two figures, and they are where students who memorised rules start to slip.
The analysis topic asks students to calculate ratios and then say what they mean for the business. A ratio without a comment, or a comment that ignores the figures, loses the marks that interpretation carries.
Who teaches IGCSE Accounting
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 0452 syllabus and exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent test, since the errors in it show whether the gap is double entry, adjustments or interpretation.
A question, worked through
A 0452-style depreciation question comparing the two methods in the syllabus. The figures are simple; the marks go to applying each method correctly year by year.
Question
A business buys a van for $24,000. It expects to use it for 5 years and then sell it for $4,000. (a) Calculate the annual depreciation using the straight-line method, and the net book value after 2 years. (b) Calculate the net book value after 2 years using the reducing balance method at 20% a year.
- Straight line spreads the cost less the residual value evenly: ($24,000 − $4,000) ÷ 5 = $4,000 a year.
- Net book value after 2 years (straight line) = $24,000 − 2 × $4,000 = $16,000.
- Reducing balance applies 20% to the net book value each year. Year 1: 20% of $24,000 = $4,800, leaving $19,200. Year 2: 20% of $19,200 = $3,840, leaving $15,360.
- Note the difference: reducing balance charges more in the early years, which suits assets like vans that lose value fastest when new.
Answer (a) $4,000 a year; net book value $16,000 after 2 years. (b) Net book value $15,360 after 2 years.
Frequently asked questions
My child keeps getting the trial balance wrong. Can a tutor fix that?
Usually. A trial balance that does not agree is a symptom of double-entry errors earlier on, and the fix is going back to the direction of each entry and the accounting equation until the entries are automatic.
Is IGCSE Accounting the same as SPM Prinsip Perakaunan?
The ideas overlap, from double entry to financial statements, but the syllabuses, papers and terms differ, and IGCSE Accounting is written and answered in English. Students moving between the two need the new format and vocabulary more than new concepts.
Does Accounting need strong maths?
Only careful arithmetic and percentages. The difficulty is in the logic of the entries and the layouts, not in the calculations.
How much does Cambridge IGCSE Accounting tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
