Essays that evaluate
The essay questions separate grades more than anything else. Marks go to knowledge and application, to analysis that follows each step of an argument through, and to evaluation that weighs the argument and reaches a justified conclusion. Students who explain one side well and add a single line of "however" collect the first marks and miss the rest.
Tutors teach a structure for each essay type and mark practice essays against it, so the student sees exactly where analysis stopped short or the evaluation was missing.
Diagrams and data response
Diagrams carry much of the analysis: market diagrams with shifts, cost and revenue curves for market structures, AD/AS for the macroeconomy. A correctly labelled diagram that the text refers to earns marks a paragraph cannot.
Data-response questions reward using the extract: quoting figures, calculating changes and connecting the data to theory. Answers that ignore the material in front of them lose marks that are among the easiest to keep.
Who teaches A-Level Economics

When the price of coffee rises by 10%, the quantity of tea demanded rises by 4%. (a) Calculate the cross elasticity of demand for tea with respect to the price of coffee. (b) What does the result show about the two goods?
- Cross elasticity of demand = percentage change in quantity demanded of tea ÷ percentage change in the price of coffee.
- XED = +4% ÷ +10% = +0.4.
- A positive value means the goods are substitutes: when coffee becomes dearer, some buyers switch to tea.
- A value below 1 means the relationship is weak: tea is only a partial substitute for coffee.

Does my child need IGCSE or SPM Economics first?
No. The syllabus starts from basic economic ideas, and many students begin Economics at A Level. Students who studied it before usually find the first term easier.
How is it different from Edexcel IAL Economics?
The economics overlaps, but Cambridge examines through multiple-choice and data-response-and-essay papers at AS and A Level, while Edexcel uses four units that can be sat and resat across exam series.
