Edexcel IGCSE Economics Tuition Online (4EC1)

Pearson Edexcel Economics: microeconomics and business economics on Paper 1, macroeconomics and the global economy on Paper 2.

Afterkelas teaches Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics (4EC1) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the specification teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across both papers and all four topics.

What Edexcel IGCSE Economics covers

The four topics of the 4EC1 specification, two on each paper.

Paper 1

2 topics
  1. The market system
  2. Business economics

Paper 2

2 topics
  1. Government and the economy
  2. The global economy

Data response and evaluation

Each paper is built from four questions that mix multiple choice, short answers, data response and a longer open answer. The data-response parts reward using the figures given: quoting a change in a table, calculating a percentage, pointing to the trend in a graph. Answers that discuss the topic in general terms leave those marks behind.

The longer answers ask students to assess or evaluate, which means weighing more than one effect and reaching a judgement. Tutors teach a short structure for these: the main argument, a counter-argument, and a conclusion that says what the outcome depends on.

Diagrams and definitions

Supply and demand diagrams, cost and revenue diagrams and the circular flow appear across both papers. A correctly labelled diagram with the shift and the new equilibrium marked often earns marks a paragraph cannot, and tutors practise them until they are quick and accurate.

Definitions are short marks that students drop by being vague. "Inflation is when prices go up" earns less than "a sustained rise in the general price level", and tutors build a list of precise definitions as the course goes.

Who teaches Edexcel IGCSE Economics

Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 4EC1 specification and exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent test, since it shows quickly whether marks go missing in data response or in evaluation.

A question, worked through

A 4EC1-style question on market equilibrium from a demand and supply schedule. Reading the table carefully is most of the work.

Question

At a price of $2, quantity demanded is 500 units and quantity supplied is 200. At $3, both are 400. At $4, quantity demanded is 300 and quantity supplied is 600. (a) State the equilibrium price and quantity. (b) Calculate the excess demand at $2. (c) Explain what happens to the price if it starts at $2.

  1. Equilibrium is where quantity demanded equals quantity supplied: at $3, with 400 units.
  2. At $2, demand exceeds supply: 500 − 200 = 300 units of excess demand.
  3. With a shortage, buyers compete for the limited goods and sellers can raise prices.
  4. As the price rises, quantity demanded falls and quantity supplied rises, until they meet again at $3.

Answer (a) $3 and 400 units. (b) 300 units. (c) The price rises towards $3, where the shortage disappears.

Frequently asked questions

How are the longer Economics answers marked?

They reward analysis and evaluation: explaining the effects step by step, then weighing them and reaching a judgement. Tutors teach a structure for this and mark practice answers the same way.

Does IGCSE Economics need strong maths?

Only percentages, percentage change and reading tables and graphs. These appear in data-response questions and become reliable marks with practice.

How is it different from Cambridge IGCSE Economics?

The economics overlaps, but Edexcel splits the topics across two equal papers with mixed question types and grades 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0455 has a multiple-choice paper and a structured paper graded A* to G.

How much does Edexcel IGCSE Economics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
