Cambridge A-Level Chemistry Tuition Online (9701)

Cambridge 9701 Chemistry: calculations, mechanisms and the practical papers, across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry.

Afterkelas teaches Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) online to pre-university students in Malaysia. Tutors teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across physical, inorganic and organic chemistry and the practical and planning papers.

What Cambridge 9701 covers

The 9701 topics grouped by area. Most areas start at AS and continue at A Level: energetics, equilibria and kinetics return with harder content, and organic chemistry adds new functional groups and mechanisms.

  3. Chemical bonding
  4. States of matter
  5. Chemical energetics
  6. Electrochemistry
  7. Equilibria
  8. Reaction kinetics

Inorganic chemistry

5 topics
  1. Chemical periodicity
  2. Group 2
  3. Group 17
  4. Nitrogen and sulfur
  5. Chemistry of transition elements

Organic chemistry and analysis

Mechanisms and organic synthesis

Organic chemistry carries a large share of the marks and rewards precision: curly arrows from the right place to the right place, lone pairs and partial charges shown, and conditions stated exactly. A mechanism that is almost right usually loses most of its marks, so tutors practise each mechanism until it can be drawn quickly and correctly.

Synthesis questions then ask students to link reactions into routes. Students who keep a single map of how functional groups convert into one another find these far easier than students who learnt each reaction separately.

Calculations and practical papers

Moles, titrations, equilibrium constants, enthalpy cycles and electrode potentials all follow set methods, and errors usually come from units, from rounding too early, or from misreading which species the question asks about. A consistent layout prevents most of them.

Paper 3 is a laboratory exam and Paper 5 a planning and analysis paper. Both reward routines that can be practised: recording results to the right precision, identifying sources of error, and designing a fair method. Tutors build these into the course from the start.

Who teaches A-Level Chemistry

Tutors are university students and graduates with strong A Level or equivalent results, screened before they teach, and matched to the 9701 syllabus and exam series. An academic advisor asks for the papers the student is entered for and a recent test.

A question, worked through

A 9701-style equilibrium constant question. Writing the expression first, then substituting, keeps the marks even if the arithmetic slips.

Question

For the equilibrium H₂(g) + I₂(g) ⇌ 2HI(g), the equilibrium concentrations at a certain temperature are [H₂] = 0.020 mol dm⁻³, [I₂] = 0.020 mol dm⁻³ and [HI] = 0.14 mol dm⁻³. Calculate Kc and state its units.

  1. Write the expression from the equation: Kc = [HI]² ÷ ([H₂][I₂]).
  2. Substitute: Kc = 0.14² ÷ (0.020 × 0.020) = 0.0196 ÷ 0.0004.
  3. Calculate: Kc = 49.
  4. Units: (mol dm⁻³)² ÷ (mol dm⁻³ × mol dm⁻³) cancel, so Kc has no units for this equilibrium.

Answer Kc = 49, with no units.

Frequently asked questions

My child struggles with organic chemistry. Can a tutor help?

Usually quickly. Most difficulty comes from learning reactions separately; building one map of how functional groups convert, and practising mechanisms until they are automatic, makes the topic far more manageable.

How do you prepare students for Paper 3 and Paper 5?

Through the routines each paper rewards, practised from the start of the course: recording and processing data, identifying errors and improvements, and planning experiments clearly.

How is it different from Edexcel IAL Chemistry?

The chemistry overlaps, but Cambridge examines through five papers at the end of each stage, while Edexcel uses six units that can be sat and resat across exam series.

How much does Cambridge A-Level Chemistry tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the papers the student is entered for, the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
