Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry Tuition Online (4CH1)
Pearson Edexcel Chemistry from atomic structure to organic chemistry, with the equations and mole calculations most marks depend on.
Afterkelas teaches Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry (4CH1) online to students at international and private schools in Malaysia. Tutors matched to the specification teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, across all four topic areas and both papers.
What Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry covers
The four topic areas of the 4CH1 specification. Principles of chemistry, including the mole, underpins the other three.
Topic areas (4CH1)
4 topics- Principles of chemistry
- Inorganic chemistry
- Physical chemistry
- Organic chemistry
Equations and the mole
Balanced equations, ionic equations and state symbols run through the whole specification, and a wrong formula or an unbalanced equation spoils every calculation built on it. Tutors drill equation writing as a skill of its own, separate from the topics it appears in.
Mole calculations, from reacting masses to concentrations and gas volumes, follow the same few steps every time. Students who use one consistent layout for every calculation make far fewer slips than those who improvise, and the layout is what tutors practise first.
Tests, observations and practicals
Tests for ions and gases have to be exact: the reagent, the observation and the conclusion. "A precipitate forms" without its colour rarely earns full marks. The written papers also ask about the required practicals, so students learn each method, the measurements taken and the sources of error, even if they never did the experiment at school.
Organic chemistry adds a vocabulary of its own: homologous series, functional groups and reaction conditions. It rewards steady practice over last-minute memorising more clearly than any other topic.
Who teaches Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry
Tutors are university students and graduates, screened before they teach, and matched to the 4CH1 specification, the award and the exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent test, since the marks lost there show where to begin.
A question, worked through
A 4CH1-style empirical formula question. Dividing by the relative atomic masses and then by the smallest value is the whole method.
Question
A compound contains 40.0% carbon, 6.7% hydrogen and 53.3% oxygen by mass. Find its empirical formula. [Aᵣ: C = 12, H = 1, O = 16]
- Assume 100 g, so the masses are 40.0 g C, 6.7 g H and 53.3 g O.
- Divide each mass by its relative atomic mass to find moles: C 40.0 ÷ 12 = 3.33; H 6.7 ÷ 1 = 6.7; O 53.3 ÷ 16 = 3.33.
- Divide by the smallest, 3.33: C 1; H 2.0; O 1.
- Write the whole-number ratio as a formula.
Answer CH₂O.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a practical exam in Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry?
No. Practical skills are tested inside the written papers through questions on the required practicals, so students need to know the methods and what each one measures.
My child memorises the notes but still loses marks. Why?
Much of the paper tests equations, calculations and precise explanations, which notes alone do not build. A tutor looking at a recent test can usually see which of these is costing marks.
How is it different from Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry?
The chemistry overlaps a great deal, but Edexcel sets two written papers graded 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0620 has Core and Extended tiers and a separate practical or Alternative to Practical paper.
How much does Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the award (Chemistry or Double Award), the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
