Precise explanations and data
A Level Biology marks specific points, and vague answers lose them. An explanation of how a nerve impulse crosses a synapse earns marks for each step named correctly, from calcium ions entering the presynaptic knob to neurotransmitter binding receptors, not for a general description of "a signal passing across". Tutors teach students to plan the marking points before they write.
Data questions are a large share of every paper: describing a trend with figures, calculating a rate or percentage change, and explaining the pattern with biology. Students practise all three steps together, because the marks require each of them.
Practical and statistical skills
Paper 3 is a laboratory exam, and Paper 5 asks students to plan investigations and analyse data, including statistical tests such as chi-squared and t-tests. These papers reward routines that can be learnt: identifying variables, describing a controlled method, and choosing and interpreting the right test.
Tutors practise these skills throughout the course, so that by the final year a student can plan an investigation and run a statistical test without stopping to recall the steps.
Who teaches A-Level Biology

A 9700-style chi-squared test on a dihybrid cross. The marks go to the expected numbers, the calculation and a conclusion stated against the critical value.

A dihybrid cross is expected to give a 9 : 3 : 3 : 1 ratio. Of 160 offspring, the observed numbers are 94, 30, 28 and 8. Calculate χ² and decide whether the results differ significantly from the expected ratio. The critical value at p = 0.05 for 3 degrees of freedom is 7.82.
- Expected numbers: 160 × 9/16 = 90, 160 × 3/16 = 30, 30, and 160 × 1/16 = 10.
- For each class, (O − E)² ÷ E: (94 − 90)² ÷ 90 = 0.178; (30 − 30)² ÷ 30 = 0; (28 − 30)² ÷ 30 = 0.133; (8 − 10)² ÷ 10 = 0.400.
- Sum: χ² = 0.178 + 0 + 0.133 + 0.400 = 0.711.
- 0.711 is less than 7.82, so the difference is not significant at p = 0.05: the results fit the 9 : 3 : 3 : 1 ratio, and the differences are due to chance.

Is A-Level Biology mostly memorising?
Less than it seems. Knowledge matters, but most marks go to precise explanation and to analysing data, and both improve with marked practice on past-style questions.
Does my child need statistics for A-Level Biology?
Yes, at A Level: chi-squared, t-tests and correlation appear in Paper 5. They follow set methods, and students who practise them regularly find them dependable marks.
How is it different from Edexcel IAL Biology?
The biology overlaps, but Cambridge examines through five papers at the end of each stage, while Edexcel uses six units that can be sat and resat across exam series.
