Precise explanations earn the marks
Biology marks go to specific points. A question on how a villus is adapted for absorption wants a large surface area, a thin wall and a good blood supply, each linked to how it speeds absorption. Fluent paragraphs that miss those points collect very little, so tutors teach students to plan the points before writing.
The longer questions often ask students to describe and explain data, an experiment's results or a graph of enzyme activity, and the marks require both: what the data show, with figures, and why.
Practicals and genetics
There is no practical exam. Instead the written papers ask about the required practicals, from osmosis to photosynthesis rates, and students need each method, its variables and its controls. Tutors teach these as a set, because the same questions recur across topics.
Genetics questions reward a clear genetic diagram, with parental genotypes, gametes, offspring genotypes, phenotypes and the ratio or probability asked for. Students who set the diagram out fully rarely lose marks here.
Who teaches Edexcel IGCSE Biology

Question
In pea plants, the allele for tall stems (T) is dominant to the allele for short stems (t). Two heterozygous tall plants are crossed. (a) Use a genetic diagram to find the expected ratio of tall to short offspring. (b) If 400 seeds from the cross grow, how many would you expect to be short?
- Parental genotypes: Tt × Tt. Each parent produces gametes T and t in equal numbers.
- Combine every gamete with every other: TT, Tt, Tt and tt.
- Phenotypes: TT and Tt are tall, because T is dominant; tt is short. The ratio is 3 tall : 1 short.
- One in four is expected to be short: 400 ÷ 4 = 100.
Answer (a) 3 tall : 1 short. (b) About 100 short plants.

Is there a practical exam in Edexcel IGCSE Biology?
No. Practical skills are tested inside the written papers through questions on the required practicals, so students need to know each method, what is controlled and what is measured.
Is Biology just memorising?
Memory helps, but the marks go to explanation and data handling: why a process happens, what the data show and how a structure suits its job. Students who understand the mechanism remember it with far less effort.
How is it different from Cambridge IGCSE Biology?
The biology overlaps a great deal, but Edexcel sets two written papers graded 9 to 1, while Cambridge 0610 has Core and Extended tiers and a separate practical or Alternative to Practical paper.
