Application and evaluation
Business marks follow four skills: knowledge, application to the business in the question, analysis, and evaluation. Strong students often stop at analysis, explaining an idea well without judging it in context. The top marks go to answers that weigh the options for that particular business and reach a justified conclusion.
Tutors teach students to anchor every point in the case: the firm's size, market, finances and objectives. An answer that could have been written about any business rarely earns the higher levels.
The case study and strategy papers
Paper 3 is built on a single case study and asks a series of decision-making questions, some with calculations such as ratios, investment appraisal or break-even. Paper 4 asks for strategy essays. Both reward planning: reading the case or question twice, deciding the judgement first, and organising the answer around it.
Calculations in Paper 3 carry their own marks and also feed the evaluation, so tutors make sure the methods are secure before practising full case studies under time.
Who teaches A-Level Business
Tutors are university students and graduates with strong A Level or equivalent results, screened before they teach, and matched to the 9609 syllabus and exam series. An academic advisor asks for a recent case-study answer or essay.
A question, worked through
A 9609-style investment appraisal question. The two methods answer different questions, and an evaluation would weigh them.
Question
A business is considering a machine costing $50,000, expected to generate net cash inflows of $15,000 a year for 5 years. Calculate (a) the payback period and (b) the average rate of return.
- Payback: after 3 years the machine has returned 3 × $15,000 = $45,000, leaving $5,000.
- The remaining $5,000 takes $5,000 ÷ $15,000 of a year = 1/3 of a year, about 4 months. Payback is 3 years 4 months.
- Average rate of return: total inflows 5 × $15,000 = $75,000, less the cost of $50,000, gives total profit of $25,000, or $5,000 a year.
- ARR = average annual profit ÷ initial investment × 100% = $5,000 ÷ $50,000 × 100% = 10%.
Answer (a) 3 years 4 months. (b) 10%. Whether that is acceptable depends on the business's target return and the risk of the forecasts.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my child lose marks on long answers?
Usually because the answer explains well but does not apply the point to the business in the case, or does not reach a justified judgement. Both are fixed with marked practice and a clear structure.
Is there much maths in A-Level Business?
Some: ratios, investment appraisal, break-even and percentage changes. The methods are standard and become reliable marks with practice.
How is it different from Edexcel IAL Business?
The content overlaps, but Cambridge examines through four papers, including a case study and a strategy paper, while Edexcel uses four units that can be sat and resat across exam series.
How much does Cambridge A-Level Business tuition cost?
The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the papers the student is entered for, the exam series and a recent answer on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
