Cambridge A-Level Physics Tuition Online (9702)

Cambridge 9702 Physics across all 25 topics, with the practical and planning papers that many students leave too late.

Afterkelas teaches Cambridge International AS & A Level Physics (9702) online to pre-university students in Malaysia. Tutors teach live in English, 1-to-1 or in small groups, from kinematics to astronomy and cosmology, including the practical and planning papers.

What Cambridge 9702 covers

The 25 topics of the 9702 syllabus. Topics 1 to 11 make up the AS; the full A Level adds topics 12 to 25 and assumes everything before them.

AS Level

11 topics
  1. Physical quantities and units
  2. Kinematics
  3. Dynamics
  4. Forces, density and pressure
  5. Work, energy and power
  6. Deformation of solids
  7. Waves
  8. Superposition
  9. Electricity
  10. D.C. circuits
  11. Particle physics

A Level

14 topics
  1. Motion in a circle
  2. Gravitational fields
  3. Temperature
  4. Ideal gases
  5. Thermodynamics
  6. Oscillations
  7. Electric fields
  8. Capacitance
  9. Magnetic fields
  10. Alternating currents
  11. Quantum physics
  12. Nuclear physics
  13. Medical physics
  14. Astronomy and cosmology

Definitions and calculations

A Level Physics marks definitions word for word: a definition of the volt or of simple harmonic motion that is nearly right often earns nothing. Students keep a running list of the required definitions and are tested on them regularly, which turns them into reliable marks.

Calculations lose marks on units, prefixes and significant figures more often than on physics. A capacitance in microfarads used as farads, or a final answer given to five significant figures from two-figure data, costs marks in every paper. Tutors make each step explicit until the habit is fixed.

The practical papers

Paper 3 is a laboratory exam in which students take measurements, record them with correct precision, plot a graph and draw conclusions. Paper 5, at A Level, asks students to plan an experiment and analyse given data, including uncertainties and logarithmic graphs. Both reward routines that can be learnt, and both are often left until too late.

Tutors practise these papers from the start of the course: recording tables, line-of-best-fit and gradient calculations, percentage uncertainties, and the structure of a good plan, so they become marks the student can count on.

Who teaches A-Level Physics

Tutors are university students and graduates with strong A Level or equivalent results, screened before they teach, and matched to the 9702 syllabus and the student's exam series. An academic advisor asks for the papers the student is entered for and a recent test.

A question, worked through

A 9702-style capacitance question. The marks go to converting microfarads correctly and to knowing what one time constant means.

Question

A 470 μF capacitor is charged to 12 V. (a) Calculate the charge stored. (b) Calculate the energy stored. (c) It then discharges through a 10 kΩ resistor. Calculate the time constant and the potential difference across the capacitor after one time constant.

  1. Charge: Q = CV = 470 × 10⁻⁶ F × 12 V = 5.64 × 10⁻³ C.
  2. Energy: W = ½CV² = 0.5 × 470 × 10⁻⁶ × 12² = 0.0338 J, to three significant figures.
  3. Time constant: τ = RC = 10 × 10³ Ω × 470 × 10⁻⁶ F = 4.7 s.
  4. After one time constant the potential difference falls to 1/e of its starting value: V = 12 × e⁻¹ = 4.41 V.

Answer (a) 5.64 × 10⁻³ C. (b) 0.0338 J. (c) 4.7 s, and 4.41 V after one time constant.

Frequently asked questions

How do you prepare students for the practical papers?

From the start of the course, with the routines the papers reward: recording data with correct precision, plotting and reading graphs, calculating uncertainties and writing a clear plan. Students without lab access at school practise with real data sets and worked practical scenarios.

My child does well in tests but loses marks in the final paper. Why?

The A Level papers mix topics and test definitions and practical skills that class tests often skip. Practice with full past-style papers, marked to the scheme, usually shows which of these is costing the marks.

How is it different from Edexcel IAL Physics?

The physics overlaps a great deal, but Cambridge examines through five papers at the end of each stage, while Edexcel uses six units that can be sat and resat across exam series.

How much does Cambridge A-Level Physics tuition cost?

The fee depends on the format (1-to-1 or a small group), how many classes a week and the tutor, so there is no single figure. Send an academic advisor the papers the student is entered for, the exam series and a recent test on WhatsApp, and you will get the current packages and a quote, usually within one working day.
